Safety moment - or a dumb a$$ one if you prefer
« on: January 10, 2017, 09:59:11 PM »

A couple of weeks back I decided to replace the head pipes on my '16 CVO RGU.  To get to the left side easier, I had placed my kickstand on a 2x4 to elevate it up a bit.  While sitting on the garage floor, and tweaking the right muffler for alignment, I inadvertently pulled the bike over on me.  My saving grace, was I was able to softly bring it down on top of me.  The fairing was resting on the rear wheel of my '33 Hot Rod, but the rear of the bike was resting on my shoulder and pinned my foot beneath the bike.  I was stuck and my cell phone was out of reach!  Only person at home with me was my 6 yr old grandson.  I was able to call him to the garage and he ran next door and got a neighbor.  No damage to me, or the bike, but a heck of a way to learn a lesson!

Bought a chock, (http://www.harborfreight.com/1800-lb-capacity-motorcycle-standwheel-chock-61670.html) and she is now strapped to it.  Very stable and secure.  Thought I would share my embarrassment to save you!

Glad your okay.
I have a free standing concord chock that I use in my garage.

Makes things a little easier and safer to work on bike.

Good job getting it down softly and glad you're OK.  Always good to have lesson learned without damage.

Wow that must have made your a$$ pucker!  Glad you and the bike are OK.   I had that same chock but it a pain to get the bike in and out unless it was bolted down and I didn't; want to drill holes in my garage floor. Now I just use my Craftsman lift which I can by myself and I get her up so it is so much easier to work on.

 :(
reminds me of the time I was working at my bench in the garage and kept backing up into the rear of my Harley which was parked between my streetrod and my wifes '87 Corvette.  So I got on the Harley and walked it forward a couple of feet to get it out of my way.............while doing this,  (and I didn't notice it),  the kickstand moved halfway up to the riding position,  thus out of the locking groove.
So as I leaned it over and kept waiting on the kickstand to halt it..........it kept going over and I couldn't stop it as it crunched the left front hood/fender combo of the Corvette.

A costly lesson learned. :-\

A good friend did a similar thing.
Keeps his Street Glide and Ultra in the basement of his cabin on top of Mt Spokane, and was sitting on the Ultra getting ready to bring it outside when he tipped over into the Street Glide, he was stuck under the Ultra looking up at the drain plug of the Street Glide, his cell phone slid out of his shirt pocket but was able to reach for it to start calling his neighbors, getting an answer front the third call, by the time he got help 45 minutes went by, He was 70 yrs old at the time. No bad injury to him or the bikes, just scratches.

I had that kickstand problem once.  Somehow I must have leaned her over while moving the bike and when I went to put down I kept waiting for the kickstand and it didn't happen.  Luckily I stopped leaning her and stood up and looked down and say what happened.  I am so very careful to make sure the kickstand is down.  These bikes are so heavy when they reach a point you are out of luck.

I am so glad the guy didn't get hurt. I can't imagine how I wouldn't get hurt if my bike went down on me!!!

Thanks a lot for this thread, been reading it last week and yesterday pulled into a vert crowded gas station and I must not have pushed the jiffy stand far enough and it sprung back up. Yep, dumped the bike.. On my Roadglide when I drop it (5 times in 50,000 miles, I am a complete moron!) it will rest on the engine guard and bottom skip plate on back of saddlebag. On my Street Glide it actually hit the front of the bag and scratched the paint. Though I have never cared for them looks like I will have to put the saddlebag guards on since obviously I can't stop dropping my bike..
Anyone have pics of a 17 SG with the guards on?
