Title: acurate fuel guage?
Post by: dakota on March 31, 2005, 06:50:48 AM
How accurate are these fuel guages as I do not have a full tank but the needle is as far right (full) as it can go. Has there been an issue with these?

i don't know anyone whose fuel gauge works right.
my low fuel light comes on at 1 tenth of a gallon. should come on at about 1 gallon.
i use my trip meter, and usualy fill up around 150 miles.
i have two friends with different bikes, and when the tank is full it only reads 3/4's
the dealer has replaced the gauges several times.

KNG

I'm with you on this one.
Haven't had a bike yet that I felt I could believe the fuel gauge.
Like you I rely on the tripmeter.

I guess I could complain but my  Chevy truck is no better, and my Mustang is not as accurate as it should be.

So why would I bother complaining?  Wouldn't do any good!

Boy, it's a real shame that the MoCo can't remedy this......maybe offer a recall with a 'fix'.  Surely the technology is available..........if they really 'cared'.  Har! [smiley=furious.gif]

I just talked to the dealership and they explained it is like a float in a toilet and it may be hung up as that is a typical problem (go figure). Another big sigh when you think of how much these bikes cost. [smiley=confused5.gif]

Had my 04 SEEG back to the dealers when new because I put in 4 1/2 gals. when the gauge read over 1/2 full. They claimed to have emptyed the tank put in 1/2 gal. & it read what the service manual said it shoud. From this I deduced I have a 9 gal. tank. I still use the odometer & fill up at 160 miles or so. Never have had the warning lite come on.

Accuracy of the fuel gauge approximates the accuracy of the ambient air temp. gauge.  [smiley=thumbsdown.gif]

Screamin, at least the ambient air temp. gauge is like a smiley face.  60ish in the 12 o'clock position and less to the left and more to the right.  It is really cold if the gauge is all the way to the left and really warm if it is all the way to the right. And we are intelligent enough to be able to gauge for ourselves if we need a jacket or not.

The gas gauge does what?  Different for different folks, reading threads and listening to complaints around the delearship.  Either full till empty then reads empty.  Or Full, then Half, then Empty, no transition.  Or Always Full, Always Empty or Always Half a tank.  My low fuel gauge did not come on the first time I was about out of gas, then the next time I had 170 miles on a tank, it came on.  Fickle at best.  But if it was at least like a smiley face showing what quadrant the tank had, I'd like it better.

More at 11...... just kiddin..    [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I had my fuel gauge, sending unit, and fuel pump relplaced under warranty and it is accurate and the fuel light works too... It didnt work the day I picked it up, and I brought it back twice. They "tried" to bend the rod for the sending unit, in the process trashing the screaming eagle metal sticker that is on the tank, that didnt work so they replaced the whole nine yards and it has worked ever since...

I know this is a sin, but it would do Harley some good to hang out in Japan for awhile so they can get their quality control at a higher standard. Forgive me if I expect better quality for the money we are spending.
