Kuryakyn Air Master Windshield
« on: April 04, 2009, 12:44:33 PM »

Has anyone tried the Kuryakyn Air Master Windshield?  It is 21" from 6 to 12 O'Clock and rises 14".  This would even set it a little further back and closer to the rider's face than the Clearview.  I believe that is why the CV outperforms all others...they just don't look as cool as the "stepped" shields by CB and KW.

I've got a CB 14" but when they (Joe) redesigned it, they stood it up further than the previous version.  If you do that, you've got to have more height and recurve to get the wind up and over the rider.

If the Kury puts the shield close to the riders chin, it could be the best of both worlds i.e. perform like a Clearview & look like a KlockWorks...Hmmmmm....

Very good catch on the Kury Shield 61BT.........As Kuryakyn has a big presence at the Laughlin River Run in about two weeks, I will be checking this out.  Looks promising.  Read everything on the CB shield (jury still out), and the Windvest while nice, might be too short at 12 inches.  I too have the CV shield, and I like it, just do not love it.  The recurve does not seem as defined as others.  Will post if I like what I see with the Kury shield.

Very interesting sheild.  I would love to see what people with it think about it.

I have the Cee Baily 14.  I like the shield especially under 55 mph.  However it is almost un usable above 70 for me, as wind hits the glasses directly and above 80 it tries to lift my beene helmet.

Larry, good call on the possible demo at the River Run.  As I will be going down early (Thursday), so this might be more of a reality before the crowds arrive. If I get the chance, I'll report back........ Since the gunfight in 2002, the police presence has been unbelievable during the run.  Still a good time & I look forward to going.  Have considered joining SNHOG, but not currently a member.

Yep, the windshield seems to be the ONE make-or-break thing on the SERG in the looks department.  This Kury seems to be the best looking at least in the pictures.  I'm hoping that it is made of thick enough material to not vibrate up and down, that it is far enough back to give me a clear view of the road and high enough & shaped in a manner to minimize buffeting.    It only comes in this one size and I'm 5' 11".  If its too tall I can cut it down but I'm betting that the amount of layback will keep my sight straight down the shield.

This weekend looks to be a perfect riding venue here in central Georgia so If they ship today or tomorrow, I might get some seat time behind it :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

I've tried them all and this definitely looks bada$$ from both the side and front.

Not only in the looks department but in the  comfort department at say 70 or 80 mph.  Many shields I like the looks of, it is just you get way to much wind buffeting around the ears and eyes at 70 plus.

Well it came in early...took a looong lunch and installed it plus a short FCF (Functional Check Flight).  As you can see, it looks awesome and it is closer to my face as predicted.  First impression...I LOVE it!  Less turbulence than even my CV Stock and Waaaay Better than the CB.  Its pretty thin and bounces when at idle but smooths out on the road.  I'm 5' 11" and I just put on the MoCo's Tallboy seat which let me sit back as far as the OEM SERG seat plus lifted me 1".  More on the seat later.  My point is, this setup is good for anyone 5' 10" to 6' 2" and taller if you keep the OEM SERG seat.

I'll give a better ride report later...back to work.

Hey Chief - looks GREAT and if my CB doesn't pan out l may have to invest in one.  Just one correction though; FCF is Functional Check Flight.  You were on the right track though.  ;)

The short shields look great, but after putting 200 mile on the bike with a taller one on, I just can't put the short one back on!

Just got back from dinner out and a ride with the BSR.  She says she can hear the music better and buffeting is minimal.  We scooted up to 90 without any sunglass blurring or severe head buffeting.

The bubble seems to defuse the turbulence and since its shaped like a wedge, the wind gets deflected to either side.  On that note, the wind noise is not bad.  We don't wear ear plugs and have open 3/4 helmets.  I even took a ride with my HD Jet with the visor that gets the worst buffeting and had no problem.

The shield is a little on the this side and will bounce from time to time but its not at all that distracting.

The tint is perfect.  Darker than the CV Stock height and lighter than the CB 14" Dark...perfect!

This will be my shield from now-on.

Here is a profile of all three shields so you can see the difference...Kury first

Did you take any measurements on the vertical height of each shield from the top of the tach to the top of the shield?  If not, could you measure that on the Kuryakyn and post back so we'll have some idea of how it compares to any other shield we might have tried?  For example, my CB 15" measured 12.5" straight up from the top of the tach and was way too short for me.

Thanks for posting the pics of the 3 shields. You Hopefully, have saved some SERG owners alot of times and money and frustration. I did whole gammut myself. stock bug deflector is stupid ugly, sorry Klaus, JMO. KW is cool beyond function. CB IMO was rushed through testing and offers me not much more than the KW. When I found the CV, I was happy, as you are with your KURY.
Only thing that matters is how we like the way they ride, and how much cool we get. For Me the CV rides outstanding and what it lacks in cool I make up for with attitude :klingon:
Me and my Posse, thats cool, I got a posse, rode to land between the lakes yesterday, 350 miles. I LOVE MY SERG just as it now is. Im pretty Fly....for a white guy.  :2vrolijk_21:

61bbltop, thanks for all the pic's! Love the look with the leather tourpak. :2vrolijk_21:

I'm glad you let everyone know about the BSR, that is a major factor in my next shield. I have the KW 12" and the BSR said she would not go out of town with that shield.

I see you are 5'11", are you looking over or through the shield?
I'm with skippy49 can you help us out a little more with the height from all three shields?

Thanks again 61bbltop!

The measurement from the speedo/tach housing turn signal neutral indicator is 14".  The measurement from the center (6 O'Clock) screw to 12 O'Clock is 20".

The CV is 13" from speedo/tach and 17" 6 to 12 O'Clock.

Rode again today and it performed perfectly.  I can even raise myself up in the saddle more and find no real buffeting...you can hear and feel it above my helmet but it's very weak because of the diffusion from the bubble.  Cooool :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Klaus, if you give this one a chance out on the autoban, you'll find it will work for your tall riding position.  I believe this one is the answer for anyone 6' and over.  If you're shorter than that, you'll need a little boost in the seat.  I see over it fine at 5' 11" and one inch higher in the seat with the HD Tallboy seat.

I believe that the Küry-airmaster does a good job against buffetting but it seems to come damn near the face ( because of the lean angle , it`s leaning back ) and i guess that i do not want to have the shield such near at my face , thanks for the report .  :2vrolijk_21:

A couple questions:

1)  Do you look over or through the new windshield?

2)  Did you try a CV that was same height as your new windshield?

Thanks!

2)  Did you try a CV that was same height as your new windshield?

Thanks!

1) I look over it by 3-4 inches.  I can easily duck down behind it too if desired.

2) My CV in the above pic is their "Stock Height" which measures 13" vs 14" on the Kury.  Since the Kury comes back at a steeper angle, it is actually about the same as looking above my CV but the CV is further forward by about 3 to 4 inches.

The only fault I can find with it is that its not as thick as I'd like.  It doesn't come with any inner seal or hardware.  I used those off my CV.  I'll need to go to Home Depot or Lowes to buy more inner seal foam.

Good job!  (1) What is the main problem with the fit?  (2) Can you see any way of making it fit with the OEM gasket?

Thanks again for your report.  I also have the CB14 and don't want it on the Interstate.  I really like the looks of yours!

First thing I did was mount it to the OEM shield...didn't work...big gap in center section.  You COULD trim & drill new holes if you have experience w/plastics & confidence.  You'd need a bandsaw with a fine blade then clean up rough edges with a sharp piece of stainless steel to shave it smooth and get the leading edge right.  If I get a wild hair next winter I may do just that.  I don't think taking that much material off the bottom would effect the performance that much.  It performs THAT well!

To me, in comparison, the CB looks like a frigging sail!!!  And on the Dark, you have this black mass in front of you that blocks the road for 50 feet in front.  The CV looks cool and rakish from the side but just looks bland (goldwingish) from the front.  The thickness and optical clarity are tops on the CV though.

Well, off to the Dyno...now, where is that dang UPS truck >:(

I've had it on for a couple of longer rides and in both calm and gusty conditions.  Since it is thinner than the CV it will bounce a little when a large gust hits it and as any other windshield, it does little for side winds.

We rode about 250 miles last Sat up to Duluth GA and back...just about all on highway...loved the shield.  You get "slight" buffeting at the top of your head but not enough to blurr my vision or annoy me.

Coming out of Atlanta we were in the typical 5-lane mad dash to escape a nuclear strike (or so it seemed) and stayed in the two left lanes most of the time.  One thing I noticed...the windshield tint and height didn't distract me.  My dark CB was distracting because I was always aware of that dark mass...not so with the Kury.  Even at night the tint is easy to see through.

I also found a really good rubber seal at LOWES for behind and am still using the CV lower seal for the bottom until I find a better one.

This is the best looking shield out there and it performs as good or better than a CV...JMHO

Hi 61bbltop, you still liking it.  The only thing stopping me from ordering this shield is the fit.  I don't have a CV gasket only the stock one.  Currently using the CB14.  So exactly what have you come up with as far as getting it to fit and seal properly?  Some close up photos would be helpful.  Would purchasing the #1370 windshield trim piece (another $129.99) help?  Thanks for your help.

Okay, we just got back from a 2K trip down to Key West and back.  The windshield performed flawlessly...so much so, that I didn't even notice it in front of me.  We hit some extremely bad rain coming into Homestead and with my visor cracked open on the full-face and me looking under it and over the windshield I could maintain about 65-75 mph where cars were pulling off the road or doing about 45 mph with wipers flailing and flashers on.  They must have thought I was nuts!

As far as the seal goes, I've posted a pic of the package from Lowes below.  When you apply it to the inside of the Kury, put it just below the black on the sides and when you get to the front, run it just below the Kury decal so the top edge of the seal underlines Kuryakyn.  This will seal the inner portion perfectly.

I've been thinking about cutting a new section of the seal to fit the outer/bottom portion of the windshield.  The seal has two holes running the length so I'd slice just behind the first groove so the bottom edge of the shield fits in there and then carefully mount the windshield with the major portion behind the shield.  I'd leave the tape in place with a little extra hanging out so when I get it positioned right with all the screws started and almost snug I could pull the backing free and the seal would be perfectly affixed to the fairing.  Just a theory but I think it'll work.  I'll try it next time I've got the shield off.

Okay...what the heck...just got motivated and installed the seal on the bottom.  Change to the procedure...you don't have to slice the seal down the length.  Here is a pic of how you should lay it down.  Clean the surface with some windex.  Go ahead and cut a length where you have an inch extra on either end.  Peel the tape of the back of the seal and install as you see below.  As you fit the shield you can peel up the seal and reposition as much as you need to.  Start in the center and make sure when you install the shield to shove it down so it contacts the seal so just the outer most ridge just clears the outer edge of the shield.

As you can see the seal looks pretty clean and is water tight.  I still need to do a little tweaking but it fits pretty good for 30 minutes work.

Seal placement.  NOTE: make sure you cut a half-moon relief for the outside/aft holes.

Thank you . I went to Lowe's and bought some weatherstrip put it on the back with a CV gasket worked well. I am 6-3 with a 34 in inseam and after using it for about 2K miles it works well, I got a little more buffeting on the top of my helmet than I really liked. For me I could be another inch or two taller...Going to call my plastics guy here in Dallas and see if he can put a " Euro Flip " on the top kinda like the CV. Other than that...I'm pleased. Thanks Greg

has anyone tried to take 1" to 1 1/2" off the top to see if it still performs well?

According to my UPS tracking it will be here Tuesday 6-16.  I'm heading to Lowe's now to get the MD Weatherseal.  Let you all know how it turns out soon.  Thanks 61bbltop!

Forgot to include the pic of how/where the inner seal should go...here it is.

P.S. I played with the seal a little more and got it to fit even better than in the above pics.

It did arrive and it's pretty.  When on the bike it's the best looking shield I've seen.  Now for the .  Should have paid more attention to 61bbltop height recommendations.  At 5'10 I'm looking about 1 1/2 inches below the top and getting a glare/mirror image of the speedo/tach right in my field of vision.  As much as I would like to make this work, I'm calling Kury for an return authorization tomorrow morning.  Guess the next step is Clear View. :nixweiss:

just to add another experience.  I ordered and installed the Kury shield. I rode with it for a couple hours and took it off and sent it back as soon as I could.  First the buffetting on my hands, shoulders was very noticeable in comparison to both my CB 13" and the CV GT Small. i have both installed at various times.  Additionally looking through the shield of the Kury was horrible.  Not clear at all.  alot of images in rainbow colors due to the shape of the shield. It was very distracting.  At this point I have the CV on.  Very similar results between the CV and the CB, although I like the look of the CB better.  Hope this helps somebody.  Peace
