Northen Alberta on fire
« on: May 04, 2016, 03:48:40 PM »

Scenes from the terrifying evacuation of Fort McMurray. Thankfully there have been no deaths reported. Special thank you to all of Canada's firefighters for putting their lives on the line to save people and homes. That level of heroism deserves our deepest gratitude.

A town I'm familiar with in my younger days.

I fought fires in my younger days for the California Dept. of Forestry.  Those pictures sure bring back a lot of memories.  Now just faded memories and an old scrap book full of color photos and news articles.

Yes, those guys work in the most horrible conditions imagionable for 12-15 hours at a time and go back the next day, and the next and the next and do it all over again.  I pray for containment soon.

So did I in Lund British Columbia. Remember how dry your mouth would get you would pay just to work up a spit. People have no idea what those guys go though

I watched the news Thur. night.  They said that Canada only had 350 firefighters on the line and very little equipment (planes, helicopters and bulldozers).  OES (office of Emergency Services) compared it to  a typlical California forest fire.  They said that a fire of that size here would have already had ten times that many people and equipment on the line with over 3,500 people on the line.

They went on to say that Canada was saying they have a different way of fighting fires but the Canadians didn't volunteer what that difference is.  Very surprising to me and obviously to the OES spokesperson that was reporting it.  Every year we hear about tens of thousands on the fire lines here.

They expect California and the west to be a huge fire season due to all the rain we got a few months ago in Nor Cal.

Sure hope the weather cools up there and higher humidity for those guys on the line and for those families in the path.

I am from southern Alberta
last I heard they had 22 air tankers over a hundred helicopters 100 plus Dozers and excavators there was only maybe 350 regular structural fire fighters
note: yesterday in my small town (1100 population) some kids had a lemonade stand on main street  raising money for the red cross effort to help fire victims  50 cents a glass . when I stop by they had been going for less then an hour and were well over $500 need to say I see they had mostly 20 and 50 dollar bills in there money bag

That's great....should of had that in the first 48 hours!

However, that's totally contradictory to the news reported this morning (but that's nothing new for us).

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2016/05/08/fire-officials-expect-to-fight-massive-canada-inferno-for-months.html

If the Canadian fire fighters are saying they only have 500 people fighting this fire, that's why they're saying it's going to take months to get it under control and put it out.  :o

My mother has 400+ acres outside of Onoway AB.  A neighbors land was already on fire but luckily they got it contained.  My mom has three fire hoses at the ready if the fires make it to her.  It is very scary.

Thanks for posting.  I believe the last paragraph addresses what barhill mentioned in his post but that's in reference to other fires going on... "Elsewhere in Alberta, more than 1,400 firefighters, about 133 helicopters and more than 27 air tankers have been fighting other fires across the province.".

I empathize and pray for all involved in these fires.  As I mentioned....this brings back a lot of memories.  While I was fighting fires and didn't actually loose any property, homes or animals.....there were several times when we believed we might not make it out and I know that fear very clearly.
