Change bars now heated grips inop
« on: February 28, 2017, 06:41:50 AM »

I installed my new bars over the weekend. Since then the heated grips don't work.

As near as I can tell the heated grips get their power from the two wire connector (female) with a purple and black wire.

Now here is where some of my confusion started. There is a two wire connector (male) one with a red and black wire and the other is a two wire connector (male) with a white and black wire. Also one other two wire connector (female) white and black.

So my assumption was the black and white male and female connectors go together. The male red and black goes to the female purple and black. Can someone confirm if this is correct?

With that configuration I had no power. Double checked connections and found one of the wires in a black and white connector was broken. So I cut off the connectors on the male and female and spliced the wires together. Still no heated grips.

Using my power tester I confirmed with switch on there is power on the purple wire. When it is plugged into the red and black connector I then have power to the black wire no matter the position of the power adjustor on the left heated grip. Is this normal to see power on the black wire no matter the position of the switch?

I unspliced the wires and checked all the black and white wires and found power on the black wire coming from what I believe is the left handlebar. Again this is when I have the power switch to the bike on.

Any suggestions or comments? Does anyone have access to actual wiring diagram to confirm how things are to be wired up?

From 2016 manual, should be the same.

Thank you for the picture.  Once this rain stops and I can get behind the gauges again I will ensure the hot wire coming from the left side to the white wire on the right.  Hopefully that will complete the circuit correctly and things will work again.

Maybe someone can confirm, but I think there is a connector in the grip on clutch sit under end cap.   Not positive but I believe I read about it somewhere

I just did bars this weekend and have the same exact problem.  Only thing is, the switch seems "looser" than it used to be prior to install.  Anxious to see resolution, because tear down and pulling the wires was a bear.

I'm a little unclear on the above post.  Is that a connector on the clutch "side" end cap?

After my post I did some more looking around and found this thread ->  https://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=105427.msg1357103#msg1357103

I am going to try that and hopefully it will help others out!

Nope, it's on the throttle side.

Thanks Jerry.

Can't wait to get home and give it a try.  I hope it is something simple that won't involve tearing it down - again!

Throttle side I know because Haird had me check it on mine after I had it off to replace the cruise button. Sure enough it was unplugged.

There's the culprit.  I didn't realize it was unplugged, because I didn't take that side apart.  (Thanks Bro') Ha Ha

Actually thought the heating element was in the Fly by wire unit.

Thank you so much Jerry and all!

Thank you for the explanation and picture.  After splicing wires under the gauges that I broke in the first place then finding the connector at the end of the grip my heat is now working.
