Winterizing your bike
« on: October 10, 2008, 12:50:17 PM »

Those of us up here in the north country are winding up the riding season. Have made a few trips to see the leaves changing and still hope to get up to the north shore of Superior before the snow flies. While trying to extend it as long as possible with heated clothing and leather facemasks the inevitable is approaching.

Those of you in similar climates to Minnesota - two seasons - winter and road construction - what do you do to prepare your bike for storage? I purchased a jack and plan to store it off the wheels but am interested in any tips or tricks you experienced winterizers use.

Up here in Canada I like to change all the fluids. I pull the plugs and shoot a little thin oil down the cylinders, a nice coat of polish, on a stand as you mentioned and use WD 40 in the blaster can to get all exposed nuts etc. Also put the battery on a tender all winter. Cover the bike with a breathable cover, not a sheet of plastic. I try to fill the tank right up with fuel to help  stave off moisture & still put fuel stabilizer in the tank. THE MUFFMAN

Winterize? We only have 8 to 10 real cold days here, just leave it in the garage if it is too cold.

Here is how I winterized my 08 883 sportster:

Front wheel changed to 21"
Enduro tyres with 3mm spikes,  250 + on each tyre
Shock absorbers rised 2 " fore and aft
Rised front fender
Enduro pegs, controls and handelbars
Heated and wind protected grips
Engine oil and battery preheating
Lighter oils
Fixed connection for battery charger,
Electrical outlet (for heated clothes)
220v connection to fixed 220v to 12 converter (preheating)
Light weight electrical winch
Alarm system removed.
Xenon lights
On off swithch for lights (starting)
and bits and pices....

as for my 07 SERK, she hibernates at the dealers garage through the finnish winter.

Actually, shouldn't you be changing to 'winter' grade air? Even down here, I believe it makes a difference, especially in handling all our twisties.

I keep mine plugged in to the battery tenders, then determine which one to take out on the nice days.  I don't do no stinking winterizing...too many opportunities to ride in the winter here.

We get some cold weather here in Oklahoma, but nothing like you guys up north get.  We usually get a little snow and ice in December - February, but we get enough warm days to get out and ride a little even in those months.

So, I don't winterize..... just keep it maintained and ready to ride through the winter for those warm days.
