What other makes/models have you owned or ridden vigorously.
« on: September 07, 2011, 12:13:08 AM »

Most of us here either have, have had, or want a CVO bike.  In my case, my father has an FXR4 that I get to frequently ride.  On a thread I posted on previously pertaining to Victory Motorcycles, there was a guy bringing up decent conversation about the new Victory models as he owned one.  Knowing this isn't a Victory Forum, but is it safe to assume that no one here has ever ridden or does ride anything other than a Harley?  Aren't we all in it for the love of motorcycling and not just to feed Willie G.'s and the stockholders pockets?  Have we all drank so much Kool-Aid that we truly believe H-D's are the only and the greatest bikes ever?

The main question is, I would like to know if you've owned anything else, ridden anything else, and what you honestly thought of it?

My impressions of my dad's FXR4.  Ride: Sucks.  Needs some serious suspension upgrades (which are in the works) to replicate the ride quality of bikes half it's cost.  Stock Power: Decent.  Keeps up with my buddie's Yamaha 1100 Custom.  Paint and Chrome:  Best in the business...it's a Harley.  Overall:  This bike cost more originally than many things out there.  It's not utilitarian.  It's uncomfortable in stock form, requiring thousands of dollars of customization to make it comfortable.  End thoughts: If it were my money, I would've bought a used 60's Bonnevile and a new Kawasaki Versys or a used Honda CB750 and a new XR1200.

Not being a naysayer.  Just honest thoughts.  P.S. - I've actually found that while going highway speeds on the FXR4, riding with my feet on the passenger pegs and layed over the tank is far more comfortable less fatiguing than riding on the highway or mid pegs...and riding an FXR like a crotch rocket gets the people looking.  Have a great evening!

In addition the the CVO Ultra, 2 regular Ultras and a Heritage, I have owned/ridden the BMW RT, the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-11, and the Kawasaki KZ 1000. All Excellent Machines when ridden hard. The KZs are fast and powerful, the BMW well mannered and predictable. I like 'em all.

Well, being 65 years old, and riding since high school, I've owned a ton of bikes.  My first was a Cushman Eagle scooter, followed my my first "real" motorcycle, an old (late 1960s) Yamaha 250.  Then along the way;
2 different Kawa 125's (I owned both road bikes and street bikes stationed in New Mexico)
Honda 450
Honda 750
Harley Sportster
Kawa 1500 (very early model)
Harley Softail Heritage
Kawa 1600 Nomad
Kawa 900
and now, 2003 SERK

Mainly my 96 Wing but it only has 23,000 miles on it and I bought it new Christmas Eve of 96. Put on 8000 miles in the first 4 months and the rest up until 2000. After that just a couple trips. I keep telling myself I'll get to ride a lot once I finish working overseas...and then I extend for another year. Might not be an option as I don't have a crystal ball. Lord I miss riding. Cheese with my whine.

'72 CB500-four: My first bike.  Black with a Hooker header, made nice sounds when it got to around five thousand rpm.  Kick start and electric leg.  Wish I still had it.

'82 V45 Magna: The exuberance of youth had me trading in the 500 on a first year Magna.  It was a marvel for the time - DOHC V4, 16 valve, six speed, shaft drive, anti-dive air forks, two fuel tanks.  Very quick and fast, kind of bland.

70's Sportster, I'm not sure what year but it had the brake and gear shift reversed: Owned it with my brother.  We were, as far as we knew, the fifth owner and each before had their own idea of what was an was not needed on a bike.  Along the way extraneous items had been removed - the front brake, the front fender, the footpegs (it had highway pegs), all instrumentation except the oil light we rigged up, it had a vinyl-covered piece of plywood for a seat which we replaced with an actual one.  It was evil to ride, a knee-buster kicking it over, backward on the pedals, the rear brake was oil-soaked after an ill-fitting drag pipe wore a hole through the tank so didn't offer a lot of decelearation.  On top of that, if you were making a left turn the brake pedal would hit the pavement and help you to release what stopping force there was; downshifting was your best chance.  The only time you knew how fast you were going was at about 60 mph when the throttle cable would flop back in the wind and give you a kind of cruise control.  You had to reach over and swing it back to slow down.  Somehow we both survived it.  Great bike.

'94 Magna: Very fast, not bad handling if you muscled it around.  Very uncomfortable at speed, somehow every molecule of air within a quarter mile found its way between the handlebars and into you.   Rather bland.

'95 Triumph Speed Triple: Not bland.  Effortless power, ridden "exuberantly".  The first generation was the best looking too.

'85 250 Rebel:  The wife's bike, for a while anyway.  An absolute blast to ride.  It's like a Piper Cub - just fast enough to get you killed.  85 mph if you pinned the throttle and laid on the tank, 85 mpg if you were less enthusiastic.

'98 Anniversary Fatboy: Loved that bike, sold it to my brother two years ago, rode it behind the hearse at his funeral two months ago.

The current SERK will probably be my last one unless I get into restoring something old when I retire.  Not that the SERK is the end-all of bikes, far from it.

Not anywhere near as old as jchamb, won't be 65 til this Jan. Had many bikes through the years, all Harleys with the exception of a '72 KZ900 (cause my shovel wouldn't keep up), still one of the fastest bikes I have ever straddled. VASCAR'ed at 158 by the SC Highway Patrol (cost me my license for a year).  One of my all time favorites (wish I had it back) was a '65 Pan Chopper. Had to carry wrenches and a qt of oil, but I loved it.

3 1/2HP Rupp Mini bike.  Brake was a piece of steel rubbing the back tire.  Ride thru wet grass and you couldn't stop.
'68? Yamaha 100cc Twin - 4 speed rotary transmission - 4 down, 1 more put you back in N.  Great for light to light.
72 Yamaha 175 Enduro with Hooker expansion chamber and MX transmission - lower first, higher 5th
74 Kawasaki S3 400 triple two stroke.  1 weighed 115lbs and could eat 550 Hondas.  Rode that sucker from VA to TX
78 Yamaha XS500 - added Vetter Windjammer
80 Moto Guzzi V50
74 Moto Guzzi Eldorado.  Traded it for a roto tiller
Honda Transalp.  Don't remember the vintage
82 BMW R100RT - true pick-up truck of the motorcycle world.
84 Moto Guzzi SP1000, still have, need a restoration
75 Moto Morini 3 1/2 Strada.  Semi Basket case.  Retirement project
98 Moto Guzzi V11EV.  Put over 40K on that bike.  Wasn't big enough for 2up touring/motorcycle camping.  Sold when I bought my first HD
01 Kawasaki ZRX1200R - lots of mods, dynoed at 128HP, but very rideable.  Bought in Minneapolis and rode home to VA.  Still have, need to sell.
00 Moto Guzzi V11 Sport, in the "correct" color.  Not going anywhere, a long time resident of my collection.
00 Moto Guzzi Jackal.  Got as part of a deal - anybody want to make me an offer?
07 FLHTCU Colbalt/White Gold Pearl.  Lost in a flood in MN along with all my camping gear, etc. 13K miles in 6 months
08 FLHTCU 105th Anniversary.  48K milesin 28 months
10 FLHTCUSE5 - Hot Citrus/Amber 48K miles and counting.
