Good deal or not so good?
« on: October 14, 2009, 12:48:55 PM »

I bought a 2009 Street Glide last November and I'm enjoying it more than I had expected. At the time I was fairly convinced this would be my last bike for a very long time. I've said that every year since 2002 and at one point had 3 bikes in the garage. After reshuffling the deck, I made the decision that a new 09 S/G would satisfy all my desires.
Enter the 2010 CVO S/G, and it starts all over again. I actually had myself convinced that I didn’t have to have it especially considering the cost. All things considered, I still couldn’t resist asking questions about it. Now I have an offer that seems to good to walk away from. The Dealer where I had bought my last two Harley’s has offered to take my 09 S/G on trade and I give them 9K for a new CVO S/G. When I do the math it seems like a very good deal.
I own my 09 outright and would finance 9 or 10K which would be approximately $190.00 a month. So I asked myself, would I ever be in a better position to take advantage of acquiring a motorcycle like this again? The answer was no.
Is this a good deal or not?

Lemme be sure I understand this, you have a bike for a year and you like it and you're looking to pay $9K for the same bike that is 12 months newer. To me that means it cost you $9K to ride your bike for a year and that seems like a lot.

Did the MSRP on the 2010 SG go up a lot? Are there a ton of new features/capabilities on the new SG or are you just enamored by the new bike smell? Did you put on a ton of miles on your '09 thus lowering the cost/mile of ownership to somewhere below $1/mile?

Far be it from me to tell a guy how to spend his money but calling it a "very good deal" seems questionable.

Perhaps there is something I am not understanding... there usually is.

What is the difference in the list $ of the CVO 2010 compared to what you payed $ for the 09?  Subtract one from the other and see if you can justify the 9K less the milage on the 09.

Put another way, my current bike is a standard 2009 Street Glide. The Dealership is offering me a 2010 Screaming Eagle for my bike and $9,000. If I recall I paid 22K out the door for my bike. That said, they are giving me exactly whet I paid for my bike 11 months ago and asking MSRP (31K) for the 2010 CVO Street Glide. That's how I see it.
The reason it's not sitting in my garage right now is because the CVO S/G won’t be in until November at which they said they would call me about three days before it arrives. I was told to “be there” when I get the call.
All I have on my bike is a set of Vance & Hines slip-on’s, S/E Air Cleaner and a Download. I’ll keep the V&H slip-on’s and put the stock exhaust back on before I give them back the bike.
I posted this because in some cases I've found out later that people somehow manage to buy bikes under MSRP; that may not be so frequent when it comes to limited productions.

It's a good deal.........................................Buy the bike

It will cost you 9 grand in extras to try to get it to CVO......... and it will still be a street glide.

Looks like you found the style of bike you really like....now take the jump and get it CVO style.

YES IT IS A NO BRAINER............JMO

He is going from a "regular" 09  Streetglide to a 10 SE Streetglide.  For $9K difference, he is getting all of his money back on the 09..  If this is the way it is, I would do the trade.

Putting it that way you owned your current bike for a year, got to ride it, enjoy it, put miles of smiles on it, and now you get dollar for dollar what you paid for it on a trade/upgrade..... Git-r-done!!!!! Sign the papers before they change their mind!!!

You have made a deal that most if not all of us would like to get. I would take the deal and heres why. You have already bought 2 bikes from them so your relationship with this dealer is good so number 3 is even better. I wish I could have gotten to number 2 with my dealership. Here, use my pen.  ;D

If that's the deal...jump on it...I've never known a dealer of any sort to give back in trade basically what was paid for a 1 year old vehicle.  (except the HD buy a Sportster and trade up to a big-twin within a year and get what you paid).   In order for them to sell your 09 SG, they're going to have to ask more than a new '10 SG would cost.  Jump on that deal and do it now...give them their $9K before they wake up out of their drug-induced haze....  :o ::) :P

I got so concerned after reading all the comments that I started thinking it was to good to be true. So yesterday I called the sales guy I’d been talking with and told him I wanted to get the loan pre approved so it would be out of the way when the bike comes in. I figured if I made this suggestion and they agreed I would know if there was any misunderstanding or if they were just blowing smoke. The guy tells me he would run it by his GM and get back with me the next day. So after not hearing from him by noon, I call and he says he was just about ready to call me. Expecting the worse, he than proceeds to tell me his GM thought it was a wonderful idea to get the loan process started and pre-approved. So I said, “Is he ok with the deal?” He tells me yes. So now the ball’s in my court. I’ve talked myself into this and I don’t think I want to pull back. The part I dread the most is telling the wife my intentions; she doesn’t share my lust for motorcycles.

I'll play the "voice of reason" here  (well ... as much as I can   :drink: ).

It certainly IS a good deal, but even the GREATEST deal doesn't mean it will fit into a person's financial plan or goals. Sounds like your present bike is paid for, and that makes your bike a VERY good bike indeed! (lol)

I mean ... if I got offered a new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 for $650K that is certainly a SMOKIN' deal (they are upwards of $1.5M list).
Doesn't mean it would make sense for me (financially) to get it.

If the monthly payment of the new SESG doesn't hamper anything financially then I would already have done the deal!!!

Just sayin' ....

If the CVO Street Glide was available in 2009 would you have bought it? If you would have then look at it this way, you were given a 09 Street Glide to ride for a year until your CVO came in.     :2vrolijk_21:      IMHO I would go sign the papers for the 2010       :2vrolijk_21:

Yes I most likely would have bought a CVO S/G if it were available in 2009.

I took the wife (and my two little girls) out to dinner Saturday night. During dinner I asked her if she liked the picture I sent her of the CVO S/G. Her response was “don’t tell me you plan on buying it!” Though it’s never a pleasurable experience, at least she knows my intentions. Though my enthusiasm is temporarily clouded from the verbal bashing I took, I still feel committed to getting the bike. With the worse behind me (I think), I can focus now on the things I need to do to prepare for the trade, such as removing my Vance & Hines Slip-On’s and a few little goodies.

I've done everything I can do at this time. Everyone who's in the need to know is informed, including the General Manager and Finance Dpt.  I'll be in touch with my sales guy and he’s going to call me before the bike actually arrives. The bottom line is that I have been told I have first grabs, but when the call comes I have to get my buns down there and put ink to paper. They haven’t asked for a deposit because I’ve been told a deposit is not binding anyway. They also know this will be my 3rd bike from them in roughly 3 years. I guess I’ve earned my place in line.

This makes me laugh because I did exactly that once already and it was worse than the time I brought home a bike without telling her about it first. Ya I had a 2002 Suzuki SVS650. I bought it because I wanted to see what the Sport Bike thing was all about. When I reached the point of trying to push the bike further than it was designed for, I knew it was time to step up a few notches. I bought a blue Yamaha R-1, same color as the Suzuki. Thought she wouldn’t notice the difference. It took a week but she eventually caught on. I couldn’t possibly attempt that again. Besides even she would see the difference between my current 09 S/G and the new one. The only approach I had was to tell her in advance what I WAS GOING TO DO. This may not be the best approach and I don’t advise it, but with my little lady regardless of how I would approach her, if it had anything to do with motorcycles the end result would be the same anyway.

Sounds like our wives are on the same page.
It is not that she hates the bikes, she just doesn't want anything to do with them.
She has ridden a half dozen times and seems to enjoy it, but want nothing to do with the so called lifestyle.
So I can get away with adding some bling to the bike without much fanfare. (not much you can really add to a CVO though)
Got away with engine mods (real hard to see).
Some bling here and there, it does add up.
She noticed the 3rd exhaust, hard to hide those 2 into 1 systems especially from the back.

Here my story, she bought me a new 08 Fatboy for our 25th. I really wanted an Ultra but I love the fatboy. So when the 10's rolled out I said I think I may want to trade up to the Ultra, now keep in mind she thinking standard and I'm thinking CVO. I never had the trade in mind so I told her that I could not get the number to work for a trade so we would just have to keep it. This is were I had to turn my bell tones DOWN. Dame woman got pissed, and then when she found out about the CVO thing well lets just say somebody happy at my house, and yes it ME.  :orange: :orange: :pepper: :pepper: :cherry: :pepper: :pepper: :orange: :orange:

I wish I knew what I did so I could pass it on, my wife said to me one day " I think you should get a new bike, just don't tell me how much you spend" well I was putting my order in before she finished. :huepfenjump3:

I can see now why I'm going to fit right in here. There’s a common denominator among us; we apparently have the same disease! The fact that a relativity small number of us are willing to spend big for a limited edition motorcycle lumps us together. We see nothing wrong with owning more than one bike and very likely will buy or trade up for a new one every couple of years. My guess is that most of us here have lost track of how many motorcycles we’ve had in a lifetime. When I had an R-1 I wasn’t satisfied until I had a MV Agusta. So it’s no surprise to me now, that I lust over Harley CVO’s.
What’s humoring me is the similarity in tactics many of us share in order to have what we desire. If it were possible I’d park my baby next to my bed, hug my wife in the morning and jump on my bike. My wife doesn’t have a particular dislike for motorcycles, she feels like she’s competing with them. The truth and reality is that she’s right! Though she’s possibly unaware of it, if push came to shove she would ultimately win; but not without a courageous standoff. Not unlike many of you, I have used every angle I could think of for justifying a new bike; safety aspects, creature comfort, resale value and one of the latest ones, “I’m not getting any younger”. I no longer try to convince myself that “This will be the last bike I buy for a long time”. On the other hand, I don’t see any other bike I would rather own now or in the foreseeable future; but I guess I measure the future in months and not years. What separates us apart from the rest isn’t a matter of who wouldn’t want a CVO Harley, but to what extent are we willing to go to own one.

I couldn't keep you guys hanging, but the bottom dropped out of this deal.
Ya the old saying stands true. If it’s too good to be true, it’s likely not true!
Apparently there was a BIG misunderstanding. When they said my bike (trade-in) and 9K they actually meant my bike trade-in, 9k down payment and than finance the balance of 9K. Just a little off wouldn’t you say.
Basically they were going to give me 14K on my trade-in and they wanted another 18k for the CVO S/G for a total of 32k less tax, license, 380 for shipping and 1700 for the b/s set up fee. All said and done it would have been around 34K. When I told them no deal they offered me 16 for my trade-in but by than I had lost interest.
Bottom line is my Stealership is no different than most of the others out there. To add another slight twist, they had a Spice Rum returned with 1000 miles on it. They said they would sell me that one for 31k. I told them I wouldn’t give them more than 29k but I still wasn’t interested. So now they will soon have 2 Spice Rum CVO S/G’s at a time when they have had one of the worse months in years.
I’ve decided to put my own personal touches to my 09 S/G and feel satisfied knowing I own it outright.
To guys have a great site going here, I’ll miss feeling involved, but most likely will lurk around once in a while to keep informed.
Thanks for being so kind.

We do indeed think alike!
Needless to say I was a bit bummed out when I found out there was a misunderstanding. So what does any reasonable guy obsessed with motorcycles do? I left work early, and went straight to my local custom Harley Shop. I ordered 4 cat eye flush mount Radiantz LED lights, a Badlands Load Equalizer run/turn unit and a Kuryakyn curved license plate holder with LED light. I’m having the lights flush mounted in the bags, two in each side. The rear fender is coming off, stop light removed, hole welded closed, and repainted. The bags will be repainted over the lights for the invisible look when the ignition is off. They are also painting my inner faring. After plunking down $ 640.00 buck for parts I felt much better. When the parts come in, the bike is going in the shop to get parts removed for the makeover.
Had I spent this much cash for anything else, that in and of itself would have been depressing. Funny how I felt so much better spending it on my bike.
Wheels are on the wish list and I’m thinking about the same ones that come on the CVO S/G. Some pin-stripping and chrome hand controls should round thing off for a while.

You have to think of it as them doing you a favor.
They saved you 9K.

You would have stood to lose 9K on the next bike after a year.

and you would have given them 14K for your bike if you had the chance.

So you can afford to put 9K in your bike and only have 23K in it as opposed to 32K and just starting to add things.

You are better off.
