Whistling Sound from front end
« on: July 25, 2010, 09:24:06 PM »

I have a whistling sound coming from the front of my bike.  Could it be an exhaust leak?
Any suggestions appreciated.

Sounds like another off-the-cuff, get rid of the PITA customer diagnosis from a "highly unqualified" H-D service department.  Why would your particular air cleaner "whistle", when other's do not?  And if you really do have an intake whistle, that would be a good indication of an air leak.  Why didn't they check that out and fix it if that was the case?

To answer your original question, yes an exhaust leak could create what you are calling a whistle.  So could a poor fit of the inner and outer fairing, or the windshield, or the lowers.  There are many parts on the front end that could whistle if they don't fit exactly right.  If you look everything over carefully and notice a gap that you think might make a noise, use some tape to cover the gap and go for another ride.  If the noise is gone, you've found the cause.

When do you hear the whistle?  All the time, highway speeds only, into a headwind, etc.  The first thing to do to try to diagnose something like this is to make a list of the conditions under which you experience the problem, and what various inputs do to change the sound.  For instance, does the noise stay the same with increased speeds or does it increase in volume or pitch?  Does the noise only become audible above a certain speed, or can you hear it sitting at a stop?  ETC.

What is your bike, if its a Road King Custom, its the nasal above the headlight.  I had an 06 RK Custom and found the problem after using tape to cover openings in various parts of the front end.  When I taped the boundary between the Nasal and the headlight the problem went away.  Has the problem always been there?  Suggest if it has or if you have performed front end mods to try blocking areas of components in the front end that air may pass through using tape or something to temporarily fill the gap.

Same thing several years ago with the SERK.  Some FLHs have a rubber gasket behind the trim rings, other don't.  I used painters tape and remove it little by little until I found problem.  You can get road foam gasket material at Home Depot and put it behind the trim ring, if that's the root cause.

I think it is coming from the rubber bumpers on the top of the front crash bar, look at the ends of the rubber foot holds, there is a half moon shaped hole there, the wind passing by the hole creates a whistle, put your feet up on them and the whistle goes away. I am going to put a dab of clear caulk in each hole...we will see if this is the fix? :2vrolijk_21:
