fuel fitting leaking
« on: February 29, 2012, 04:21:51 PM »

OK I just put my bike back togeather, and when I put the fuel tank back on I installed the fuel line. Now its leaking under pressure. Some were on here I read that there is a o ring that is not available separately? Is this were its leaking from? Is it true that I need to buy the whole fitting?
Thanks

Talking about a leak at the tank quick disconnect?

Use a mirror a light look up inside. If you damaged the o-ring you will probably see it.

You might be able to pick it out and trim the "strings" and it may work.

If it's the coupler fitting and if it had been together before then left to sit and dry out for a period of time it's not uncommon to get a leak on reassembly.  I always (try to remember to) squirt up inside the fitting with a good spray lube if it's going to be apart for awhile.  Just to keep things from drying up.

If it does leak on reassembly often times taking it apart and putting it back together a few times will get a seal.  If not you may be hosed (short of replacing the fitting).

I say "may be" because while the o-ring isn't listed available separately I have replaced it before.  Used the closest visual match o-ring from one of the larger assortment packs.  It's been in there four or five years and has been disassembled and reassembled quite a few times since its replacement.

Your miles may vary.

Well if you "do" find an o- ring get more then one!
That'll save you about $50.

May save you even more if you don't break the fuel pump removing the hoses. That will add another $200 to the job.
And don't ask.

Just make certain you buy an O-ring certified for use with modern motor fuels, including those containing alcohol.  Using something meant for a Delta faucet, for instance, might not give you the result you desire.

I looked this o-ring up at my friends shop several years ago but the problem was the certification for fuel.  I figured tha the cost of replacing the line was cheap compared to a fire.

One bit of advice to all.  The fittings are often gritty from street use.  Clean the fitting upon removal from the quick disconnect and use a little quality o-ring lube upon reassembly.  Also, be sure to manually push up the collar while pushing the fitting into it straight.  It's easy to shave off a piece of the o-ring if it's started slightly crooked under force.

On current HD bikes the o-ring currently chatted up is in the coupler rather than on the line.  Not a huge price difference to replace one versus the other so the point is the same.  Ease of replacement on one versus the other is different though.  Something like 75 durometer viton rings are readily available in large assortment packs and will live in a fuel environment fine though.  So if one could find a size that's right we do have options.

An HD 11273 case dowel oring works fine as a replacement for the check valve oring

Jim, have you tried exposing that ring to fuel?
