Oil temp gauge wiring routing - '00 SERG
« on: February 13, 2018, 08:56:24 AM »

Decided to swap the pretty much useless air temp gauge for oil temp gauge on the old SERG.  Instructions say to route wiring beside the rear brake line & up the right side frame down tube.  That side sure is cluttered (already added hyd clutch line) compared to the left side.  Has anyone tried using the left side instead of right side?  Pros/cons?

It only takes 10 minutes to remove the fuel tank on my Limited.
Than you can run the wire inside the harness housing forward and route it with the wires going into the fairing.

Oil temp gauge installed in my old 2000 model for so long had to remember how I ran it.  Did the install either while the tank was off for other reasons or took the tank off just for the gauge; honestly no clue which.  But my wiring from the sending unit is attached to the RF oil pan bolt with a small wire clamp then goes over to the right frame tube.  Then it goes back and gets collected in the engine harness from which it goes on forward under the tank then inside the fairing.  Joined the sending unit run with power and ground for the single plug at the back of the gauge.

So the supplied wiring was long enough to run backwards, up behind the trans, forward under the tank & into the fairing?

Don't remember.  Too long ago.  It's simple quick splices to add something if not though.

Thanks.  Think I'll run a single 'test' wire that way & see if Mother Harley supplied enough to do without splicing.
