Title: Klock Werks: 5" Flare Windshield
Post by: dm930 on June 15, 2017, 03:11:48 PM
Hey guys,
Been a while since I posted but I wanted to know if anyone uses a Klock Werks windscreen.
I am 5'7" 30" inseam and ride a 15 CVO SG.  I really haven't had any real turbulence issues on the stock one.  I measured stock vs. the 5" KW and the KW is an inch taller.  They tout a couple advantages...

Downforce increases, guessing it adds more weight to the bars?
Shoulders direct air away.
Top lip flips air upward.
Most important to me, the owner claims the sound system is more clear and less affected by wind noise.

Any validity to these claims?  Everything I've read has been positive which is why I ordered it.

Many thanks....
Demetri

So the KW 5" is taller than our stock 7"?

By 1 full inch.  They measure it weird.
When I measure the stock shield I took a straight edge and placed it horizontally across the top of the shield.  Then I took a tape measure from the middle screw and measured up till the intersect.  That gave me 4.5".  The 5" KW Flared shield measured 5.5".

I have that very model on my 2016 SESG and it might do all those things they claim, its very close to the stock windshield in looks, but the only thing I don't like is the distortion if your looking down like at the front wheel, its very bad, I kind of wish I would have got the dark model so you cant see through it, I have about 9K on it and was thinking of trying something else.

I thought about the opaque version but kind of like the dark tint.  Don't really plan on looking at my front wheel too much..  Lol   :huepfenjump3: :orange:

I have the light tint and do not really look thru it often, so visibility or distortion is not an issue for me. I find even with my new thicker seat that turbulence is not a problem. I am happy with screen and pretty sure you will be too.

I also have the 5" Klockwerks Dark Smoke model on my '16 Street Glide.  I love it when using the stock seat. But when I install the touring seat (and tour pak), I catch a little buffeting on the helmet. I'm 6' with a 32" inseam - so I have a long oompa loompa torso and sit higher most 6' guys. I've been considering ordering the 6.5" model.  For me, there is no issue with the vision/distortion looking through the windscreen.

I'm also the same physical size as the OP.  '17 CVO SG with the 5" KW shield.  I bought the 6.5" KW, but it was to tall. Always stretching to see over it vs right even with top edge blocking way too much road, so I then bought the 5".   I like the looks of the stock Windsplitter better, so I put it back on 3 weeks ago to retry. I wear either a do-rag to keep sun off my scalp or a headband to cover ears to block out wind noise.  I noticed right away that the buffeting was always making my do-rag top flap from the wind and work up a little. Constantly readjusting it.  Also slightly more wind noise. Gave up and put the 5" KW back on. The KW has a little more flip than the stock WS to direct air up higher.  All is good now, my do-rag stays put. I also have a better view of the road over the sides while in corners with the KW vs the stock Windsplitter.

I also bought a stock SG seat I thought Id want for long road trips as the CVO seat isnt as comfortable with its less padding, but it moves me an 1" higher. Then the 6.5" may be a better choice with that seat.

US1, would you have a photo of your bike with the S.G. seat and new windshield? Considering S.G. seat for my 15 S.E. S.G. Thanks.

Windshield arriving today.  Will install tonight.  Worried that my cell phone mount may interfere though.
I hope it doesn't.  Here's a pic with my stock windshield and phone mount...

If it does try this one, bolts to the clutch mount at the handlebars.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170621/183f944da1bbda3da7a8d3644f85e1b6.jpg)

I am familiar with the Biker Gripper but was really concerned about the phone coming out of the grip.  What are your thoughts on that?  Any issues?
I am wondering if mounting the the control cluster is a safer location rather that the fairing mount which I have.  I am wondering if the mount will endure more bumps on the fairing over the cluster mount....  Anyone have thoughts on this?

So I just installed it and aesthetically, I absolutely love it!   Tomorrow morning I'll get a chance to take it out and test it.
Best part is it clears my phone mount....  barely...  ;D
Although I like that Biker Gripper Phone Mount also.  Thinking about that.  Wondering if it will absorb the bumps better than my windshield mount.

I have not had any problems with the phone coming out or being loose from a rough road, just rode from Ohio to Tennessee and back without any issues.

Sorry for late delay, just noticed this.

I bought the SG seat because I need a backrest for anything over 30 min of riding, and the seat itself is more comfortable for me, over the CVO seat. The wife likes the CVO seat better for comfort. I put the CVO seat back on this yr and bought the backrest from CVObackrest. I got used to it and do prefer the 1" lower seat, thus never put the SG seat back on.
