Title: I received the call this morning
Post by: MIKEYTEE on October 12, 2017, 07:53:59 AM
The phone rang at 6:25 this morning. My youngest brother was calling to tell me the news you don't want to hear. Dad died this morning sometime after 2:00 and before 6:15 AM. Dad lived a good life and some may remember that he remarried at the tender age of 90. At 97 and with congestive heart failure it was his time.
I last saw him in August when we gathered in Nags Head, NC for a dinner to celebrate his life while he could still enjoy the event.
Dad was a pilot in WWII and was an engineer at NASA in the space program. Dad retired some 30+ years ago and enjoyed a good healthy life until the last year or so when the heart problems started.
Dad was a long time member of the Lions Club and had a fishing tournament for the blind named after him.
Dad used to say " I don't have any old friends, they are all dead! " Well  now he can reunite with those old friends on the golden streets of Heaven.
Till we meet again, Rest In Peace, you deserve the rest.

Mike

Mike,

You were very fortunate to have been able to have your Dad still around and functional to such an advanced age.  Most of us  have lost our Dads long before the age of 90 and beyond.

May all the Dads (and Moms too) that have passed on............rest in peace.

To be a child of God means absent from the body, present with the Lord.  While you and the family miss him, you are right Mike that you will see him again someday with a new body, no hurts, pains, crying, sorrow...."when we've been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing His praise than when we first begun".

My step father is still with us and sharp as a tack at 94 with 69 missions over Germany under his belt.  I salute him and your father, Mike.  They truly are/were the greatest generation.

Mike,  losing a parent is so very hard,  but when they have a long healthy life it makes it somewhat easier.
Our prayers are with you and your family.

We should all be so lucky to live such a long and adventurous life.
Remember, it's the dash that counts, and your Dad's was a long one.  Good for him and bless him for his service to others.

Regardless, it is always tough when a loved one passes.  All the very best to you Mike and your entire family at this difficult time.

Thank you all for the responses to my Dad's passing. It is never easy loosing someone you love, weather it is a parent, grandparent, sibling, child or any family member. ( That includes our pets. ) You my friends here make it bearable. I truly believe without friends you might as well live in a sealed box.

Hell Mike, the way things have gone since the early to mid 2000s when a lot of the surprising still present old guard of this place started hanging around it could be that a "new version" of the GTGs is a bunch of old farts in their power chairs on the Pig Trail or doing the Dragon (on their way back to Cracker Barrel).

Sorry to hear about your father.  Be very glad you had so much time with him.  I have lost both my father and mother and think about them always.  I will still get a memory of him trigger from an event or discussion and I can't help but smile and relish the moment again.

Mike,

I don't read the Rider Down much, maybe I should scan a bit more often.

I'm very sorry to read about your dad passing.  We all know he's doing better now.  Sorry for your loss.

My dad made to 11 days prior to his 95th BD.  My mom had passed about 15 years prior to him.  In his later life, he got into the local history of the community and had MANY stories to tell about his youth in the area.  He was sharing these stories with the local area museum curator.  He told me once that he was having problems finding older people to pick their brains about the area.  I told that he WAS THE OLDER PEOPLE...  The area was rich with logging back in the teens, 20's and 30's.

He was a biker by choice, or by necessity I guess.  Back then he rode whatever he could because he didn't have a car.  And Michigan winters were always eventful.  He had family in WV and he would ride from the Mid-MI area down to WV.  He told us about one time he was riding back through Indy and stopped by the race track.  Back then it was all brick and they were doing repairs and it was a lot looser in security back then.  He asked if he could take a lap and they say hey, go for it.  My brother and I did some checking and around the time dad said he was there, they were doing work and people taking laps now and again was not that uncommon.  So all the men in my family now have taken laps on the I-500 track...

Mike, I lived so close to my dad in later life, but did not take the time to spend with him as I should have.  I miss that now, but I have great memories...  :2vrolijk_21:

I'm sure you will carry your memories until you meet with him again.

Ride safe my friend and see you next year in ES.
