Oil Change
« on: August 16, 2017, 07:56:34 PM »

So I'm at 15,000 miles and just changed the oil. I was amazed how clean the oil was. Anyone think it due to the water cooled motor? I know it's not a lot to change the oil but do we really need to change it at 5000 miles?

Bro. You really got a set on you to run your new CVO 15,000 miles on the factory oil.
Rock on brother.  :bananarock:

The oil can "look" clean, but the only way to tell the true condition of the oil is to drain some and have it analyzed.  Many critical factors affecting the oil can't be seen with the naked eye.

As long as the bike is under the factory warranty I would suggest you stick with the factory schedule (5000 miles).  You could have the oil analyzed and adjust your change schedule based on the results of the analysis, once you get past the warranty period.

I sent my TC 110 oil to Blackstone Laboratories with 3,600 on it last fall.  Got a good report and they said to try going to 4,000 next time.  5,000 seems about "right" for an M8 to me.  That's about where all my 4-wheeled vehicles' oil life monitors get into the 10-20% left area (if those can be trusted at all).  I personally don't think I could get comfortable going much longer than that on any motor, even with an OK from Blackstone.

Although not a air cooled mc, we ran the 4 cylinder Fusion company cars  15k on Semi-synthetic Motorcraft. They did analyze the first few times, oil was good, no problems. For what its worth. Saved about $100 year on 650 cars. Lot of money.
