Chain Drive
« on: September 06, 2017, 07:30:57 PM »

Just wondering if anyone convert belt to chain drive and what are your thoughts? There is option to go to 30T tranny and grind swing arm to retain belt. Or go to chain ,what are pros/cons ...  This is from Dragos web page                                    24 front and 50 rear = 2.87 stock ratio
24 front and 52 rear = 2.97 ratio
24 front & 54 rear = 3.04 ratio
what would be difference in riding and performance from stock to going to 3.04 ratio.
tnx

Unless you're making tire shredding power and worry about breaking belts, stick with the belt.

Engine sprocket = 34 teeth
Clutch sprocket = 46 teeth
Trans sprocket  = 32 teeth
Rear Wheel sprocket = 68 teeth

Primary ratio = 46/34 =  1.353
Final Drive ratio = 68/32 = 2.125

Overall Final ratio = primary X final = 2.875

Change the trans output sprocket to 30 teeth and you get 3.067

Change the engine sprocket to 32 teeth and you get 3.054

If it were me, I'd change the engine sprocket instead of the trans output sprocket.  Rivera makes a kit to change the engine sprocket and still retain the compensator.  The result of either change will be better low speed response and acceleration, and about 6% higher rpm at any speed.  If you currently run 2500 rpm at 70 mph in sixth gear for example, you would expect to run about 2650 rpm after the change.

I did the 32t down to 30t on the trans drive belt sprocket.  I did the swingarm mod with the welded gussets and slot lengthening.

This was the BEST weekend project that I've ever done.  Matter of fact, it's the best mod I've done to my bike.

If you ride two up much, it's a game changer.  Evo Industries make a new clutch basket with 49t and that does about the same and you keep your original comp.

Did you install Evo Ind 49t clutch basket? I do know from experience not to use Evo Ind. Comp 30t gear that has no comp. Bad vibrations had to remove it.

No, I did the trans sprocket in a 30t.

I had looked very early on into EVO Ind and their clutch baskets, which leave the crank sprocket alone.  At the time they were making things out of aluminium and they wore out very quickly.  They shortly went to steel baskets and all is good now, at least that's what I've read here and there.

Check out the link in my earlier post about the Rivera kit to replace the engine sprocket.  This isn't like the EVO Industries solid sprocket, which I definitely DO NOT recommend, you still use the SE Compensator but swap out the stock sprocket for the Rivera sprocket.  It also includes a change for the primary chain tensioner shoe to compensate for the extra slack created by the smaller sprocket.  Prices I've seen are around $220.
