117 kit reliability
« on: October 01, 2017, 10:23:04 PM »

Well these kits have been out for a year and a half now, so what's the verdict? How are they holding up? Installed the kit in April and have a little over 10,000 on it. So far it seems all is good. CCP was at 193 when the build was started and its still right there. Can't tell that there is any oil usage between changes. Maybe they got this one right.

I've put 13,000 on an FXSBSE Breakout 117, 9,000 on a cross country road trip. CCP at 215, no oil usage and all's well.

I sure hope so. Waiting is difficult. Heads should be at WFO Larry today. Then just wait till gets too them. Should I do the 2.120 valves or just leave stock.

Larry would be the best one to answer that one for you if he is doing the heads. I think most of us that have had heads done for the 117 have went with the 2.12's

What is the advantage going with the 2.12's. The builder is using the Tman 585 cams.

2.120 valves allow for 5 or 6 angles on the seat, this really helps low lift flow and is independent of cam choice. Actually, with the smaller 585 cam it probably makes more difference, that's because the valve is at low lift twice per event, once upon opening and again when closing. The low lift flow (under .200-.250) is determined almost entirely by the valve job, not the port. This aids the port velocity over all and helps the engine "come on the cam" at a lower RPM in addition to aiding over all torque and HP.
I personally think the supplied 259 cam is fine for baggers if you aren't lugging it around all of the time. True, the idle will be worse, but you don't drive it around at idle and you do want everyone to know it does have cams in it! Drive a something with a 117 kit and the 259 cams before you make a choice anyway. I run a Breakout (much lighter bike, I know) with the 2.120 valves, modified stock 2 into 2 pipes, and porting with the 117 kit, tuned by a Thunder Max (which goes a long way cleaning up the idle and low rpm,) and absolutely hated the 259 cam. Peak power was at about 55-5600 rpm, and the idle was also milder than I expected. Last week I installed a Red Shift 627 cam (.625/.600 and 260/268 duration on a tight lobe center) power is peaking at 5800, but I can still pull 6th gear at under 2000 rpm easily. I am looking at a bigger cam already, again, and with the addition of a 2 into 1 header I am sure I'll like it.
Another issue is the compression ratio with the earlier intake closing of the 585s. Like most everything else the MOCO does, this kit is designed to be all things to all people, it isn't a race only kit, but a well thought out street combination of parts. If you are near Phoenix, AZ, drive mine and decide for yourself.   JMHO   TIMINATOR

Mine is in for a suburban speed 117 build right now. Already had wfo Larry heads from a 113 build, but had them sent back for a little clean up and milling for a compression bump. I think he sent them back off today.

The wait sure is difficult, I agree. But it's definitely worth it. Ive learned the value of solid head work with the 113 build. Hope your project turns out well!

2500 miles on the SE 117 kit.
Very happy with the kit, no oil use. (not measureable anyhow) Huge bang for the buck.

So do I have an old catalog or does the 117 kit fit only the 2014 and newer Twin Cams? Other than cooling options I can't see why this kit wouldn't fit my 2011 Ultra. I cringe at putting more sauce to the stock flywheels so still thinking S&S 124 kit or maybe their crate HC mill. Unless things have changed since the M8 came out I'm thinking we still need to drill for oil lines when using the S&S crate engines.

ESP expires next June and I sure would like to have the lifters changed out but every dime spent going that route could be factored into building the engine the right way. Harley sure made out on my buying the ESP. Didn't expect to still be working overseas and haven't put more than 60 miles on this bike since 2014. Now the 2015 Road Glide Special, I ride the heck out of it when I can. A whopping 3000 miles in 2 years...how can I rack up so many miles???  ;D  :'( Yeah, it sucks but still dreaming about a powerhouse ride.

So, if I wanted to upgrade my 2013 SEUC8 to a 117, this kit would do the trick?

Mine finished today and did 135/133. Not the HD kit, but used suburban speed cylinders/pistons with 6.6cc dome.

You will see numbers anywhere from 110 to 130 hp and anywhere from 120 to 135 tq. All depends on the dyno and how picky they were on the build. The lower numbers are just bolting the kit on and the upper numbers are 0 decked and head work. Exhaust plays a big role in those numbers as well

What he said although I think the heads play a bigger part  (headwork) roughly 10% on the increase if the rest is done right and more depending on how high you go on compression.

IMO, the biggest difference will be between a canned HD map, or a REAL tune by a tuner on the dyno.
(or on the road)
Look at the SE advertised power compared to tuned engines, same parts but the tune.
It can easily differ 10+ hp.

Remember the SE map is smog legal.

Installed my 117 kit in my 11SEUC last June  13 K later Front Cylinder Intake lifter went south ( shoulda upgraded to the S& S when I put it in)  While thoroughly cleaning, I pulled heads, cylinders and cams  Going to Tman 625 with Tman 117 Pistons and had heads ported.     Cylinders were visually ugly ( scuffed and scratched but measured out ok by my head guy.  Going to beehives as well hoping to reduce some valvetrain wear and noise
