Gas tank overflowing
« on: October 03, 2017, 10:00:17 PM »

2012 CVO SG.  Filled up on gas today and it overflowed back out of the flush-mount gas cap.  Not the first time this has happened but it was by far the worst.  I could not get it to stop even though i could look and see that it was not that full (not even in the tank neck). I could watch it build just sitting still on level, then lean the bike to the left and it would burp it almost and the level would go down, then start building all again.  Any suggestions on what is causing this and how to fix it?

Curious, are the switch and key turned to OFF when what you describe is happening?

It does this both while on and off.

Do you fill it up sitting level (center stand) or on the side stand?

The fuel should never be forced out of the gas cap, if it's installed correctly and is tight against the seal.  Check the fuel tank vent line to make certain it is not plugged or kinked.  Air should flow freely from one end of the line to the other.

Harley has had a lot of problems with those flush fuel caps not sealing correctly btw.  If the tank vent system is working properly, and you still have fuel coming out of the cap, have the cap and the filler opening in the tank checked out.

I've had this happen on my R/K a few times. Had to change the fuel cap, vent went bad. Never had problem again after replacing cap.

Thanks for all the replies.  I spoke with a local dealer today and they suggested replacing the gasket that is on the flush mount cap.  Will try that and repost.  I know they have reported issues with the flush cap but it came stock and this is the first time Im having a problem.

I had the same problem with the gas and also the cap not sitting flush to the top of the tank and someone on here said to lube the seal / gasket on the gas cap and the problem will go away and it worked well.  So I would lube the seal / gasket as soon as I see the cap not sitting flush with the tank and had no problems with gas leaking out the top or the cap sitting flush after that. I do not remember what lube I use something that was rubber friendly that did not dry out the seal / gasket.
