RANT - -99C lifters still used on 2017 CVO motors

Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

The 2017 CVO's still use the -99C lifters.

Why do we let the MoCo do this to us?

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

The bean counter making that call gets a huge bonus for saving the mofoco X amount of money per unit sold.

Obviously they have their own priorities, and the long term viability of the product and customer satisfaction is not "Job One" as Ford used to say.

Here's your answer:  ...and yet those that experienced lifter problems in their previous CVO models still trade for a new $40k+ bike, with the same failing parts, and the cycle of insanity starts again.

Don't worry, I assume all that testing they did before releasing the M8 showed the "C" lifters were more than adequate.  All you beta testers will get the opportunity to do some real world testing for them, as per the usual game plan, since all that testing Harley always claims they do never seems to catch anything.  Oil pump failures were just a fluke & not Harley's fault.  Good luck.

I hand-built an old Harley (but have thought about Wings and Indians) before even considering a new Harley.  Of course the old Harley used good lifters in an engine without the heavy loads/pressures that are eating lifters anyway.

No need to, your M8 will be the best bike ever built on the planet and you'll never want to part with it!

I don't have nor will I ever have a 14 or later Harley.  It's the TV screen in the dash that I think ruined the HD Tourers.  My family has a 1955 Packard with analog gauges.  They all still work.  My first GPS unit lasted about 5 years.

I can't believe the bean counters that save a nickle on lifters have no say in how many motors those cheap lifters cost the Company.

Your M8 might be your best Harley, but my 12 CVO is my last Harley.  I really like it, and will continue to put money into repairs. And I will complain mercilessly about the poor components and the attitude the company has.

As long as the faithful keep buying, knowing of the historical problems, the MoCo makes out like bandits -  the original sale, after the warranty period expires they profit on labor, lifters, cam bearings, compensators, oil pumps, etc.  Then a few years later on the trade for a new bike, where the cycle starts again.  Why would they change?

One thing I've noticed on this forum over the last couple of years - it seems the faithful may be reaching their limit.  There are more and more posts where longtime HD owners have had their fill and are looking at Goldwings, BMWs, Indians.

 :-\
As an old guy,  most all my buddies have sold theirs cause they can't do it anymore or back problems/knee problems, etc.
says........oh, I cant go out of town, my body wouldn't take it. :nixweiss:

Thus,  my milage is very low for my HD and my usual ride is short and to the local pub or two and then back home.  Of course,  I do my own thing on long rides out in the country from time to time too.

But................if I were to sell/trade,  I likely would swap over to Indians.  Have not yet gone to their dealership,  but if/when I do,  a move to an Indian would be very likely in the cards. :drink:
