another shock question
« on: November 01, 2017, 10:02:39 PM »

i know, just go ohlins.  but i'm not in a position to do that right now.

i want to know if there is a suspension that is better than stock, at a reasonable price, that i can swap out the air shocks on the wife's bike.  she was not totally disappointed in the stock performance, until lately, they seem to be 'jarring' her a bit more than usual.  pressure is still at 15lbs where she's kept it for a while.  i know that i can drain and refill the oil in these, but i'd rather go with coil over shocks and not have to deal with air pressure at all.

she's always had the 12'' shocks (roadking custom, roadglide custom) so she doesn't miss the ride of the 13'' shocks (never having ridden them).  so i would like to go with maybe 12-1/2'' to give her more suspension travel without a noticeable lift in the rear.  with gear, looking at 160lbs.  never 2 up.

anyone got any suggestions?  i did have a pair of the premium hand adjustable in 12'' on her bike before, but she doesn't weigh enough for those.

Good shocks cost way more than they should. Decent shocks will still cost 500 -600 on the low end. I learned that YSS Z366-TRL shocks work very well on 98 Road King. They were over 600 . They do as well as the much more expensive Hyperpro on my Road King.
Ohlins does make some lesser expensive shocks.  JRI single adjustable are supposed to be great. If you do your homework you can find them as low as 680 once in a while. I would do that at that price over the YSS Z366-TRL. But I am very pleased with these si far

Great luck with both Race Tech and Works shocks. Race tech on our Indian Scout and Works on FXR, Dyna and 06 Flhtcuse. Very happy with all of them. Good luck.

13 inch HD air shocks with 1inch lowering blocks. thats how i have my 16 set and it works good for me, plus every body is throwing away them shocks so cheep n easy to try and if she dont like it you aint out much if any...you tube how to change oil in them shocks and you can play with different oil weights to tune them in. mine is like riding a sofa down the road and never bottoms out, im sure it could be better if i spent a grand or more ... but why

i would really rather go with coil over shocks, but if worse comes to worse, then i can try that route.

that being said, anyone got any old hd air shocks they don't want?

just replaced  my serk and my wife's roadking with progressive 944's. Big difference plus you get 13 inch travel and a 12 inch seat height.  Billy

I put 13 1/2" Progressive shocks on my 2009 street glide and they are an improvement over the stock 12" stock air shocks. I am sure that they are not an Ohlin, but you are not paying the higher price either.

Check out Super Shox still a little pricey. Had Olins didn't work for me, but the Super Shox's sure did.

I also went with Super Shox. Lifetime warranty so you don't have to pay to have them rebuilt every few years and with the 30 day, no questions asked, return policy you have nothing to lose.

Why not go with a 12" shock and put a 1" lowering block on it? That way you lower your bike without giving up valuable shock travel.
