Hand gun training
« on: December 08, 2017, 12:54:11 AM »

I've had a concealed carry permit since they were first available here in TN.  Don't recall exactly when that was but pretty sure it was before we moved into our current residence and that was 1985.  So a long time for sure.  Never needed it thank goodness and over the years haven't pursued any training beyond that required for the carry permit.  Now I have gone to a range facility and plunked a few at targets but nothing organized or educational.

But recently a buddy and I have taken a few classes at local range facility.  A couple months ago it was Intermediate Hand Gun. Of course we did target shooting but also learned how to clear jams and do tactical reloads.  Interesting an fun.

Tonight we completed a two session eight hour class (four hours each night) on Hand Gun Self Defense Level 1.  Here we brushed up on the skills from Intermediate and added quite a bit.  Specifically drills with varying scenarios requiring you to draw and shoot when a perceived threat is announced, shooting from a concealed location so you can see the bad guy before he sees you (hopefully) and several others focusing on control and technique.

I learned a lot and came away from these classes with a deeper appreciation for our LEOs as both of these instructors were Sheriff deputies and quite skilled.  After just going through the drills in class I cannot imagine the stress from having to confront a threatening situation in real life.  My hats off to these guys and gals who work so hard to keep us safe.

These days it seems all we hear is negative things about our men and women who put on blue uniform every day. Thank you for sharing and God bless all law enforcement.

A local privately owned range.   A lot (but not all) of the instructors are working LEOs who do evening and weekend classes.

Good for you ultrafxr!
Everyone with a concealed weapons permit who hasn't got LEO experience should take a similar class or two to know if they can handle the situations that may come along.
And those who want to criticize the LEOs need to take "shoot, don't shoot" training to see that it's not like in the movies etc.
You can get additional training in this NRA sponsored program and since you do carry you may want to consider insurance too so you can survive the legal aftermath if you are ever in a shooting:

With all of the anamosity toward Policemen, Firemen and the Military, I decided a long time ago to pick up the tab for everyone in any resturant I frequent.

More then ever, they all need to know that there are lots of people who respect and support what they do for us all.

Try it. They will like it.

Happy Holidays.

I would suggest to anyone that carries to go and compete in defensive pistol competitions. I have been a member of IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Assoc.) for several years and compete regularly. The competition stages are based on real life scenarios and involve shooting in different positions, performing reloads, and off hand shooting. Scores are based on time and accuracy.

Our (my wife and I) initial Conceded carry course was taught by two State Troupers who's primary job was teaching officers.  Very good three day course.

We do want a more advanced course.  We often practice, and our range does have active targets.

Getting a Ccw is only the beginning.  It is just the basics of shooting  and how the l law is.

It would be very wise of anyone who carries with or without a permit get some higher level training.  It has save my bacon twice.  If it is not practiced every thing will turn to S?&t when you need it most.  It is just like riding a bike, do you really think taking the test makes you a good rider? NO   It takes practice to build muscle memory and the skills you need when things go wrong. Without practice you are gambling with your life against a stacked deck?

Jerry, good for you. Keep it up. It is fun and you will never know when you will need it the most. Hopefully you will never need to use it.

Have to second this. Situational practice is the best. Joe Idiot on the range playing Quick Draw McGraw is most likely to shoot himself in the leg. IDPA, IPSC, and 3 Gun matches make you practice with your brain while practicing shot placement. I have shot many matches and RO'd some big (250 shooters) matches. With minimal required equipment, most anyone can go out and compete. You don't need to have $5k wrapped up in your rig, like some of the sponsored shooters and macho guys do.

train as often as you can. Use training that induces stress. Stress has the most dramatic effect on how you will function in real world scenarios
