Canbus question
« on: December 10, 2017, 08:00:44 PM »

I am removing the entire factory stereo system minus the head unit. While reading the wiring diagram I see there are several Can Hi and Can Low wires. I'm guessing these are Canbus wires. Wanting to remove the wires from the harness which I won't be using I'm not sure what to do with the Can wires. Just about every plug I'd like to remove has two pair of these white twisted wires in them. All of the new stereo equipment will be self supported, I'm not taping into anything existing.

Removing these wires is like disconnecting and removing what they plugged into. It may result is an error code as the computer will not be able to see the device that was plugged in. Look at it this way it would be like removing one of your arms, your brain would have to get used to it but it would not stop your brain from functioning.

Weather or not you get an error code will depend on the programming. If the program is written to report an error if it no longer has communication with the disconnected or defective device then you will get an error. If not then you won't get an error.

I would disconnect what you want one at a time and see if your computer likes it or not. Can Bus can get very complicated.

Good luck with your project and ride safe.

Thank you. My thought process is that I would see an error code. From what I have been reading it sounds like once I clear that code I won't see it again. If by chance the error code keeps coming back I am guessing it would be looking for some sort of ohm resistance which could be as simple as a resistor. Not certain though.

It's possible that the stock audio system could be disabled in the BCM menus, thus eliminating your need to remove the communications wiring or find a way to trick the system to avoid error codes.  I don't know that for a fact, but it would be worth investigating with someone fully familiar with the Harley system.

a very general thought is stereo systems are being replaced all of the time. I would think if there was a problem with doing it you would not see it being done so much. just a very general thought.

Jr1000yarder removed everything but the head unit without issue from his 2014. I think 14 was Canbus. I'll be good to go it seems as long as I don't remove the main Canbus line.

my 07 has can bus to the sidecar...  all the switches on the sidecar dash are on a single pair of wires to the head unit.

supposedly the first use of can bus on harley - from that point on it grew.

so, ya, the sound system is hooked up to can bus. modifications can really ruin your day.

Random thought - since this could pose a level of difficulty, would be better to avoid the cannabis while working on the canbus.   :nixweiss:

Find someone fully trained in HDLAN, which is Harley's name for CAN bus.  Options are enabled and disabled in the BCM, and things like the infotainment/audio systems are controlled by the BCM.  When someone buys an "upgrade" for their late model Harley, like a Boom system for instance, part of the install involves enabling it in the BCM.  There is a very good possibility that the entire system could be disabled without resorting to butchering any wiring.
