What stock cams are in 2006 103SE
« on: March 23, 2018, 11:48:47 AM »

I recently bought a 2006 CVO Ultra Classic from the dealership with 16k on it. The upgrades were pc3, Hooker Slip Ons, and Cams. Cams? I got no further description on the cams. The dyno sheet says 96/104 I think. I'll post a pic of it when I get home. I'm asking you guys for common cam upgrades for this engine. Something maybe that would get these results with the stock intake and filter.

The stock cams were SE253's.

Before changing cams 2 recommendations:    1. check crank run out, 2. do a leak down test.    Many of the 2005-2006 era bikes had valve seal issues.  Once replaced they were good to go.

Zippers 575's were good upgrades the springs will handle these cams.

Another good upgrade cam was the S&S 570 cams set at 10:1.

You have to decide where you want the power and what type of power you want to really specific recommendation.   Low-mid power or mid-topend    duration, overlap and lift will be the concerns you have depending on power and limitation of not doing headwork and check/setting up the heads to handle different lifts.   As you only have a 43mm throttlebody that is going to limit the horsepower.    Many guys did headwork and put on a 51 -55 mm throttlebody.

The 570's  43mm throttlebody, (sach's) headwork, 2-1 exhaust 10:1 compression on the hemi heads you have yield in the neighborhood of 100-105 hp and 115-119 torque.    More hp can be expected with a bigger throttlebody.

Are my heads Hemi heads?
I lost a baffle out of one of my Hookers and can't find them anywhere online. I put a set of more restrictive Pythons on there and it felt like it had more go

Yours has Screamin' Eagle heads, and is stroked. The CVO 103 engine was one of the best ever made by HD.

^have heard the same thing about it being one of the best engines from several different tuners and motor builders...but then again I am partial.

Your Crank has full compliment rods the new 103’s use dickhead rods

Believe the older cvos were HD SE cranks and had if memory serves me heavier flywheels

Although it’s what they look like I guess you could also say you got screwed when they changed to them .  And the spec went from .003 to .012 for runout.

I agree with Unbalanced, change the Throttle Body, Air is king, much is noted about the exhaust, but very little is said about the Throttle Body, I changed mine and wow what a performance difference, you can add cams change exhaust, air cleaners, but the TB is the bottle neck, more needs to be said about the TB, thanks Unbalanced, :)

In the stock state of tune and even with a cam change I can't see the big need for a throttle body change. Air filter for sure. With head work picture changes. The 43 gets in the way then. The chambers are huge on the heads and they have about 8.6:1 actual,  not advertised, compression. Therefore cam changes while stock need to be done carefully to avoid killing low end torque. The redshift 575 works, works better with added compression.

I've had several friends who have the 114 and the 110, switched out the stock SE Throttle body for the HPI 55-58MM Throttle body. and they are glad they did, and they still have their warranty. I've always been told Air is king for performance, just by changing out the AC with the bottleneck in the Throttle body in my opinion doesn't do anything. I think it's an EPA think with Harley is the reason why they have the bottleneck in their units.

I've talked to Chris on several occasions, about the TB, he and his crew travel all across the USA, at the shows, says for the money, the switchout of the TB is what gives the numbers when they do dyno's.

It will give the feel of more throttle response not more power on a dyno. Similar to upgrading the stock carb bikes to a Mikuni 42 from the CV40. More throttle are just means a bigger gilp earlier. Look for a SE50, they are on Ebay very reasonably. If not A 51 is adequate. Inlet diameter is 1.630"

Pig, I want to make a disclaimer, I'm not a gearhead, I'm a Harley rider who rides with others who have CVO's, so my expertise is from the bar stool not in the shop. So here goes to where their coming from, Call Horsepower Inc, tell them what your riding, they will be more than happy to tell you what Throttle Body will fit your bike, One important thing to tell them, and that's if you had cam work, head work, and if so, did you keep the stock exhaust size.
When I purchased mine, I sent the stock Thottle body to them, they changed the electronics to the aftermarket one, then I took it home installed it, then had a dyno tune on my bike. I also had other work done previously, so mine was a little more complicated, but my friends say it was easy and worthwhile.

Talking to a buddy now, he say HPI did a dyno after installing the throttle body along with an aftermarket powervision, and Bassonai headers.

Nice looking bike! Be aware that a throttle body change will mess up the current tune and require a tune and a tuning device to bring it back in.

Pigrider, I just purchased a Mustang seat solo, like yours, took it to a seat shop, had gel put into it also has them take and reshape the rear of the seat so I can have a deeper pocket, can't wait to try it out when it warms up! do you like your solo seat?
