Factory reset of BOOM!™ Box Infotainment System
« on: April 17, 2018, 11:30:06 AM »

Hi.
I just got my FLHTKSE 2017 and I noticed that the Premium Boom!™ Box 6.5GT has been installed over the CVO Boom!™ Box 6.5GT  So now I cannot do any updates at all and probably need to do a factory reset of the complete system. The local dealership has too much in their books the coming weeks so I wonder if anybody can guide me to do a factory reset myself to retrieve the original CVO Boom!™ Box 6.5GT software as standard to be able to see the tire pressure monitoring system and the rest of the CVO specifics :)

Are you sure about this? It doesn't make sense that your system would accept an incorrect update. Assuming you are correct, have you tried simply updating your system back to the current CVO update? You could try this. From your computer, click on this link:  https://www.harley-davidson.com/us/en/owners/infotainment/software-download.html  download the latest CVO software on to your computer. Open it. Move the image file which is the larger file onto a USB stick. Go to your bike. It's a good idea to have it on a battery tender. Turn your bike on and insert the USB stick. Your bike should recognize the software and ask you if you want to update it. Just do what the screen tells you and you should be good to go.

If the Boom updates are like many others on the market, look for instructions on how to prepare that USB flash drive before copying the update files to it.  Usually there will be instructions telling you what format is required for the drive, remove any other files on the drive, etc.

Thanks for the response.
I have tried both iso files on newly formatted USB sticks and it will not accept any of the files. My previous bike was a FLHTKSE 14’ and I did several updates on that bike without any problems. I do beleive I need to do a factory reset of the radio to get back the originsl CVO version of the software. I just wish I knew how to do that.

Doing a Factory reset does not change the firmware version.

What happens when you try to use the CVO file.

Thanks again for the help.
I get the message "The ISO image on the attached USB is corrupt or incompatible" when trying either the CVO Boom!™ Box 6.5GT software update or the Premium Boom!™ Box 6.5GT.

The challenge is that the dealer I bougth the bike from is 280 miles from here and I do not have the time to go all the way back to them to fix the issue which is;

They have managed to install the Premium Boom!™ Box 6.5GT  over the original CVO Boom!™ Box 6.5GT and I have not got a clue on how to reverse this. I tought a factory reset could maybe get the correct software back.

Sounds like you have a corrupt USB drive or corrupt download. Try starting fresh on all fronts. And, if possible, using a Windows-based computer. For some reason, the Boombox doesn't always like taking a bite of the Apple (usually occurs when doing map updates).

But if you insist on resetting to factory settings, here is how you do it (excerpt from the 2014 Touring Electrical Diagnostic Manual as posted from another forum).

To enter the Service Menu:
1. Turn IGN OFF. Wait 15 seconds.
2. Press and hold power/mute button. Turn IGN? to ACC.
3. Continue to press the Boombox power button for 2 seconds after the WARNING screen is displayed.
4. Release power/mute button and accept warning.

The Service Menu may display "Diag Service not Avaiiable" when a menu option is initially selected. This message will clear once the system has finished performing the power-on process.

Service Menu Options are: DTCs, Audio, Display, Key input, Component menus, Version info, Reset, Touchscreen. You want to select "Reset".
Reset options:
Pre-calibration reset: Restores fatory default settings. This is recommended when there are radio symptoms and no DTCs*
Post calibration save: Archives customers settings so that they can be restored after a Post calibration Reset.
Post calibration reset: Resets the radio to factory default settings and restores the last archive data stored during Post calibration Save.

You want Pre-calibration reset. Proceed at your own risk.

FYI, I had to do this procedure on mine when I loaded a route with too many waypoints. Despite the MoCo's claim that a route can have up to 99 waypoints, I found out the hard way that the REAL limit is 60. Anything more than that froze the unit. This was last Spring using v1.21.0.4, so I don't know if it has been corrected since.

Many thanks.
I did the factory reset just now , but it did not change the software back to the CVO version. I still have the standard Premium Boom Box 6.5GT and not the CVO Boom Box 6.5GT. Not sure how the dealer was able to install the Premium Boom Box 6.5GT over the CVO Boom Box 6.5GT, and I dot think they know themself either.

This may help, may not, you also get that error message if you don’t extract the file to the ROOT level of the memory stick. If you aren’t careful windows extracts the file to a sub folder by default.

Not surprised the reset did not solve your problem, as it doesn’t replace the firmware, only resets the defaults.

To my knowledge, there is no check during the firmware install that confirms a match between the software version being loaded and the unit itself. I once loaded the CVO version in my Ultra Limited (which uses the Premium version) just to see if it worked and I had no problems. So you should have no problem loading the CVO software once you figure out the problem with your USB, file, or file location as King Glide points out.

Is it possible that the stereo was changed in this bike?  Maybe a non-CVO stereo was installed...I don't know if there is a difference possible or not.  How else could this happen?

I’m guessing someone has updated the software with the non CVO update, you should be able to update it with the correct CVO boom update and should be fine

I'm suspecting the head unit has been changed to one off a non CVO....   However, if that's the case, you CAN still install the CVO version.  Download the CVO Update. Unzip it to a flash drive, and the .iso file will be called swdl_6.5GT_CVO something or other.  Remove the extra _CVO from the file name and see if that will install.

Thanks for all the help so far. It seems as the previous dealer where i bought the bike has by mistake installed the non-CVO over the CVO radio so I can not update with any of the versions. My local dealer will re-install the CVO original software using their digital tech when I am back from my overseas trip in early July. Hope that will solve the issue.

Road Trip,
Do you have a resource for factory reset of a 2020 BOOM GTS system? I had a corrupt USB or iso file when I was trying to update the entire system and now it is stuck at package 2 of 7. When it gets past that it stops and tells me to retry. Been fussing with this for 2 days now.  Any help would be very much appreciated.

Read below to see how I overcame a possible factory reset on my 2021 BOOM GTS system:
This is exactly what I did. I went through 3 different USB drives til I found the right combination. USB 1.0 was too slow I guess to perform the update and froze. USB 2.0 had both the system and dealer location update files on it as did the USB 3.0 drive. All failed after package 2 giving me and error message that said my update was interrupted and I needed to place the selector in the ACC position, reinsert my USB, and select retry. All were USB drives were formatted Fat32.

Final option was what Road Trip mentioned. With only the system swdl_boombox_GTS_DOM.iso on it (only 6 packages to update) I was able to complete the update and overcome a blank non-functional screen - FINALLY!! As soon as it hit the 3rd package I knew I was home free.

So the procedures I used on my 2021 BOOM GTS system was:
1. Format the USB drive with exFat format (tried Fat32 and it didn't work).
2. Downloaded a fresh swdl_boombox_GTS_DOM.zip file from https://serviceinfo.harley-davidson.com/sip/content/document/view?id=1476231221942946063
3. Extracted the swdl_boombox_GTS_DOM.iso from the zip file and copied just it to the USB 3.0 thumb drive.
4. Turned bike switch to ACC.
5. Inserted the USB 3.0 drive and...

System automatically recognized the file on the USB drive and started the update of 6 packages.
Update completed and the system went to the main display and all is well. Worked like a charm.
It's a beautiful thing to see.

I hope this helps someone else avoid what I had to go through.
