Has anyone updated their Zumo 660?
« on: April 26, 2018, 08:53:37 PM »

I have a  Roadtech Zumo 660. Has anyone updated their GPS. I'm looking to update it but don't screw it up.

I would appreciate hearing from someone that has updated theirs.

Is it worth it.

Thanks, Dan

i have the harley branded road tech, and the wife has the 'vanilla' zumo 660.  we've updated them several times via garmin express.  basically, keep the firmware up to date, and update the maps as the new ones are released.  i try to delete the old maps after installing the new maps, but it definitely is not an intuitive process.  and if you don't have one, you will need a memory card.  i use a 32g one as i also load all my music on there.  have never had any issues.

Thanks for the reminder.  Have not done mine for awhile.  Will do it yet this evening and be as current as I can for the spring/summer.

I just did mine last week. Just plug it in with the Garmin Express installed on your computer and follow the bouncing ball. Very easy

Yeah but when you fire up Garmin Express check for updates to it.  They are not automatic and not having the most current version of Garmin Express caused me a problem a couple years ago while doing a map update to my RT 660.

After updating does it retain the Harley dealers?

The RT one will, but I doubt it will update the dealer list.  The lastest (which isn't very new) is here:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=5067

And that can be loaded on to non RT Zumos too.

What he said. The dealer database is totally separate from the maps. Has to be updated separately.

Garmin customer service, in my experience, has been excellent. They walked me through up-dating the dealer list.

Thanks for posting this information.  I have a "non-Harley" Zumo and was able to add the HD dealer POI file after a routine map/software upgrade.  It was comically simple to do.  All I did was plug in the unit to the PC via USB cable (as required to do the routine map updates), click the Garmin web link above, click the file download icon on the web page (do not "open" file, select "save as" - directly to the GPS: Garmin\POI folder).  Unplugged and powered on the GPS and the Harley dealers are all there under a bar and shield icon.

Edit:  I also removed a file "006D135900.gpi" from this folder which seemed to be some sort of airport(?) related file.  Online I read this is a factory-installed file and not used by most users.  Anyone know exactly what this is, and if I made a mistake removing the file from the unit?

I did not have any gps navigation in any of my vehicles until the CVO.  I was so happy to be able to save many favorite spots and the dealer maps came in quite handy on my road trip from Alaska to Texas, that I bought the zumo version of the roadtech and was actually able to 'clone' the roadtech's data into the new gps.  The dealership data is a separate file like mentioned above, but I already had that file on my computer.  Now my truck has the same information the CVO does.  Plus, because the new zumo still has free updates available at this time, I can update it, and then 'clone' in reverse to the CVO.

Updating the 660 is a very simple process. You just need to download the Garmin Express first, you can find it at Garmin.com and it is free. Then the Express will notify you when updates are available for however many Garmin's you have. You can rename the units to whatever you want if that is something you are interested in. Just buy yourself a SD card prior to starting because you are going to need one for sure. I use a 16g but whatever you have over 8g will work.
Hook the USB cable that came with your GPS to the unit and the computer and open Express. it will tell you if a update or update(s) are available and how long approx it is going to take. After the initial step it usually says "we got this" and you can step away while it runs. When updater is done usually you have to restart the GPS then your done.
Very easy. I do the unit in our commuter car approx 4 times a year as the updates become available. I sold my 660 but still update it for the guy as he is not a computer person (?). We have noticed besides map updates the restaurant, hotel, gas station info is updated and saves stopping at an exit only to find the Shell station is a field.

Interesting observation on SD cards...

As noted, many of the Garmins don't have enough internal memory for the full North America map file and need the additional SD card.  Get a high speed SD card.  The unit seems to find waypoints much faster and just generally seems to work better overall with a faster SD card.  It also speeds up the map update process (assuming you're on high speed internet).

Had a gas station on last years maps that was closed for over 20 years!!! But, the guy that lived there has expensive fuel in 5 gal cans. It was in Washington along the river between Wash/Or.
