Side of the freeway again!
« on: May 21, 2007, 11:33:54 AM »

Last week I broke down in Fremont and was nearly killed on the side of Interstate 880.  Yesterday when I left the Oakland A's game, I got on I-880 south.  I go about a half mile and I see a big cloud of dirt/dust about 1/4 mile ahead of me and traffic comes to a halt.  A guy in a town car must have passed out becuase he drifted off of the right side of the road, ran over an emergency phone pole, took down another pole, went between the sound wall and the guardrail, then hit one of the huge poles that hold up the exit signs!  This was right near the 98th St exit in Oakland.  I pulled off to help and got to be on the side of the freeway yet again, making Kimberly stay behind the guardrail for safety.  One look at the car said the guy was dead or dying, but he was actually in pretty good shape!  He was shocky, had some cuts, and had burns on his hands (from the airbags), but was otherwise okay!  We had to break the left rear window and use crowbars to get him out of the smoking car.  We closed the right lane with flares and a pickup truck to keep us safe while we worked on him and waited for the ambulance.  A doctor stopped and was able to take over the medical part.  This guy was lucky to be alive and that the Town Car saved his life!  I'll tell you though, I'm getting tired of stopping on I-880!

Aren't flares for lighting fireworks?

Great job with the assist.  It's amazing how many people drive past those situations because they "don't want to get involved".  You did the right thing and I'm sure you never gave it a second thought.

Ernie, good man.  Great job.

Blonde intepretation of Emergency Flashers;

blonde gets flat tire on the interstate. Eases over to the side of the road.  Gets out of car, opens trunck, pulls out to cardboard men, unfolds them and stands them at the rear of the car, facing oncoming traffic.  The lifelike cardboard men are in trench coats exposing their nude bodies to approaching drives.

Not surprisingly the traffice gets snarled and backed up.  When the police arrive they ask the blonde "What is going on here?"  She just says her car is broke down, and the cardboard men are her Emergency Flashers.

Sorry Ernie.  It popped in my head.  You still did a great thing.   :cherry:

You couldn't pay me enough to ride on those freeways.

The bay area certainly has many beautiful roads , but other than 280 forget about freekways.

Ernie, you know how all the bay area freeways are but I heard on the news this morning that interstate 880 is commonly known as the Nasty Nimitz (880 is the Nimitz freeway, for those that don't know) and that it's been voted as the most unpredictable freeway in the bay area.

I feel for Jim.......he lives right by it and travels it every day. :nixweiss:
