SERT w/o dyno tune?
« on: September 25, 2007, 12:25:42 PM »

I was thinking of adding the SERT along with a new exhaust system and Doherty A/C for the new bike I'm SUPPOSED to be getting-  ('08 anniversary USE)  The thing is, to do a dyno tune, I would need to have the engine broken in first.  Should I wait until spring and leave the bike stock until then?  Or do they have some kind of base maps that I can make do with until a spring dyno tune?

I was wondering the same thing.  I'm not after 100Hp but I'd like to increase the AFR.  There must be canned maps to get us close to ride for a while.  I wish I could answer your question.  I'll wait to see we both get an answer.  :vrolijk_11:

I'd even be willing to just buy the SERT and leave the pipes and A/C stock if I could just get a base map that would put the AFR to 13.1 to 1.  I could get the rest of the stuff done next spring with a re-tune.  Does anyone know if previous SERTS had a map for just this purpose?  Maybe the new ones would too.

SERT's in the past have came w/maps for at least Stage 1 upgrades, and maybe other stages of upgrades. The maps were specific to H-D parts though. Example: SE A/C, SE Slipons, etc.

That answers my question, I have SE slip ons and will go with the SE/AC and SERT in the spring.  Your turn Steve....

Looks like I won't have to worry about it.  I'll be lucky to have the bike by spring.  Also, from what I see from the Screamin' Eagle catalog their mufflers are all at least 49 state street legal with catalysts.  -I'm gonna just keep seeing what others on this site are doing with their bikes, reading articles and taking my time.  I just wish the MoCo would offer the option of ordering the model bike I want without an engine and tranny.  I'd put the S&S 124" twin cam motor in with the S&S 6 sp. tranny.  -But then I wouldn't have any problems with the bike.   :huepfenjump3:
If I didn't have any problems with a new bike, and nothing to fix on it, what kind of life would that be?   :bananarock:
It would be like owning a Gold Wing.  You don't rally have to know anything about it except where to put the gas in because they actually work and are reliable.   :pepper:  Maybe it's time to sell my soul for reliability!   :nervous:

I guess I should change the picture beside my posts.  -I did all that stuff to my watermelon bike.  My problem is that my dealer wanted my bike to sell during Sturgis- which they did.  My new bike was supposed to be shipped the first of August.  The dealer gave me an '07 Ultra (non-CVO of course) to use until my new bike comes in.  I took it back to the dealer this past Saturday.  I still have my Heritage Softail to ride, so I'm not completely screwed.

I'm just trying to figure out what I want to do to the new one IF it ever comes in!
I'd be happy to leave it completely stock if it doesn't run too lean.  The rental bike I was using ran WAY too hot!  But if I have to buy a SERT to richen it up, then I'm going to make it worth while and do the A/C and pipes.

The new '08 SERTS are already out.  The fly by wire shouldn't have any effect as far as I can tell.

Steve G & jgeorge 102

Just put my 08 SERT in on Friday with out a dyno. The software has a program close to matching my set up, SE A/C and Rinehart TD. She has a little hesitation in starting from a stop. He made a small adjustment and she is running sweet. Buttdyno approved. :huepfenjump3: Significantly cooler even on a 93 degree day. It works for me. Hope this helps.

This winter she's getting head / cam work done. I'm looking at fixin up the bottom end too.

Get the SERT tuned when you have it put on. Canned maps are inefficient and there is no way to do "minor adjustments" to a SERT. You can get it retuned if you do further mods. Around $400 should get you a 5-6 hour extensve tune. Trick is to find a good tech who knows what he is doing.

Problem w/a full tune in this case is his bike is brand new with limited (no)  miles. A full dyno tune before breaking the motor in I don't think would be a good recommendation. :nixweiss:

Yes there are canned maps, they are sufficient for what you want to do.  If you give the manual for the SERT a good read you might be able to make the adjustments they recommend yourself and come out with a good running bike, without the Dyno.  I've been playing with mine (2007 103" Ultra, SE A/C with Zippers 2.75" Filter, SE Mufflers) from a canned map and making small adjustments as recommended and my time allows.  A recent trip to the Smokey's showed me I've done pretty good.  The bike is running great, getting 45mpg runnin 85-95mph on the interstate all day and about 48mpg on the backroads, even the twisties in the mountains.  No detonation like I was having with the TMAX (which got a max MPG of 32) and the bike is cooler sitting in traffic for extended periods.  I did get an occasional pop on decel, but that was mainly on the tight twisties running 2nd gear to 5k+ and letting off of it for the next hairpin.

Also been working on a friends map (2006 88" Ultra, 26G cams, V&H TD, Wild Pigs, SE A/C) and managed to increase his MPG from mid 30's to just a little over 40mpg average.

Just remember, change one thing at a time and you can always go back to the previous map if that one didn't work (as long as you saved it that is).

Thanks for the info FR8TRN.  I think I'll go ahead and buy the SERT now.  From what I'm seeing, it sounds like you were smart to get a new Ultra and do the 103" upgrade.   :2vrolijk_21:  -Steve
