Sidecar
« on: March 12, 2008, 01:21:00 AM »

Has anyone added a sidecar to their SE bike? With all to talk of 2ln's new addition, I'm thinking of a Road Glide with a sidecar added ( Shelby needs to ride too). Are there any problems associated with adding a sidecar to a RG? Or any other SE for that matter? I know my SEUC2 owner's manual says not to add one but gives not reason as to why.

If it stays, however, don't be surprised if next winter's project is a cool triple red with eagle along its side matching sidehack for Parker to take longer rides with me in.  I'm thinking a SERG with a color matched and eagle matched hack would be sweet.

AJ, the SEEGs got the no sidecar warning because they were lowered.  The Ultras aren't though.  No clue why there would be such a disclaimer.

By the way, which color?

Don, if you add the sidehack to the SERG you don't need the trailer as if not carrying a passenger in there, you will have extra room for extra stuff if you ever thought you preferred that bike for an overnighter.  We have seen a few in our area where folks added the sidecar so that three could ride.  Ends up because of weight distribution that the larger of the two passengers is best suited for the sidecar.  So it's Dad and daughter on bike and Mom in the side car.  They like it.  I'd still rather just be on my own.  I'm betting that it would not be too long before Parker had her own bike so if it is only for her that you are considering the contraption, leaving her behind you will teach her more about commandeering that sitting in the side car would.  Just thinking out loud again, and you know that usually only gets me in trouble.

Go for it man. Shelby would love it. I like that better than a trailer for him. :2vrolijk_21:

You do realize that if you get a hack, you're gonna have to clean out your garage. :nixweiss:

Some of the issues with a side car are,

1)  You have that big weight hanging off the right side. When you accelerate the tendency is to pull to the right because of that weight
2)  You have that big weight hanging on the right side. When you brake the tendency is to steer to the left because the big weight is trying to pass you on the left. Most sidecars from Harley have a brake on that third wheel to account for that problem.

If you want to try one out I can arrange it for you.
This is an 03 R/K (silver and black of course) owned by Ken, the owner of H/D of Charlotte.

My brother just added one to his RG (non-CVO) and it got the wife thinking. So now I'm exploring options too. It looks like fun, but not sure if it's something I want on all the time because I ride daily to work and the side car would mainly be for the weekends. There are some non-HD versions that claim to be easy to put on and take off. How bad is the HD version?

AJ do you want one for just around town or for long trips also :nixweiss:

I have been looking at a sidecar for Jade, seems better for her than a trailer.

Those are fine around town but they are slow.
Real slow, to slow!
But for a parade bike I wouldn't mind having one!
I could take off the sidecar and put on a bike rail for when houie comes to visit!

Just an FYI - My '08 FLHTCUSE3 manual also says no sidecar, so it's apparantly more than just the lowering that cause the MoCo to put the label on.  My '99 Non CVO ultra, which had engine work, had more power then the SEUC3 and the previous owner of that bike ran a side car on it for awhile so I don't see that the power causing it to pull to the right is really that much of an issue.  I've wondered since I read that why it would be a problem?

The are worried that the heat from the 110" will burn the monkey or blister the paint on the sidecare.  ;)

That's more what I'm looking for. Not really looking to tour with it. We just had a baby, so we were thinking of a way to get her out...In a year or two, not now, but why not start looking.
