Head Phone Jack
« on: October 22, 2009, 08:25:59 PM »

I sold my 04 SEEG in 08 bought a std 08 rg, finaly got it sold and now I'm am picking up my O/B SERG in a couple weeks :orange:, Having the dealer install chrome switchs, Xm and the garage door opener. I was interested in the new Boom head set/intercom accessory but the $800 just didn't seem right :nixweiss: So I was wondering if anyone has found a good way to install a standard headpone jack onto the radio output that allows me to plug my headphones in and listen to what ever the radio is playing. Thought I would run it into the left fairing glove box or run it up under the seat. Surely there must be a way :nixweiss:.

We can wire a 3.5mm headphone jack that will mute your speakers and allow you to control the volume through the units headset output via the handlebar controls.

It can be done pretty easily and inexpensively so you can still have hand control of volume etc... it requires removing the outer fairing and some minor wire splicing. you'll need to get an matching line transformer (radio shack and any car stereo place has them) for about 35-50 bucks. you splice those wires onto the stock speaker wires and the transformer allows matching impedance for your headphones.I ran the speaker wire under the tank console and it was really clean...   sorry i dont have more pix of the install itself but this is how I mounted it on my tank console on my last bike (08 RG)    it's just a simple flush mount 1/8 stereo jack and worked GREAT!!!

Awesome,  :orange:  I mostlikely will need more pics and radio shack part numbers but I think I can do it myself. I was thinking that both the headphone jack and the speakers would be playing at the same time and I would be able to turn the speakers off manually with the speaker switch if desired.

Why don't HD offer this option?  :nixweiss:

with a line transformer running your headphone output off the speaker wires, you will not be able to shut off the speakers and still have the headphones active. You will be shutting both off

This is true but I actually used an adjustable output transformer which I maxed out... with the headphones (I have Westone custom ear molds) at normal volume the speakers volume was very low and not an issue. I just didn't take the time to wire it through the switch. i may do that on my SERG.

Totally understand, but if you use the switch, the internal output of the radio will change from speaker to headphone. You will loose both in your current configuration. You don't have anything wired to the headphone output.

Ahhh... I gotcha now.  Yea, I sort of took the lazy way out but it did work well. Would love to see some of your work Iron Cross.

Excuse my ignorance on the RG, but does the RG have a 7 pin helmet connector on the tank?

If it does you can buy an adapter for about $30.00 that plugs into it and gives you a 3.5mm stereo jack to plug your ear phones into.

The RD goes not come with the same tank console that Ultra's do but they can easily be added. I think LarryB has one on his SERG.

Is this a doable option? Can the 7 pin helmet connector be added to the RG easily and then buy an adapter for the 3.5mm headphone jack? I'mgetting ready to pop the fairing off to do a Hawg Wired stereo upgrade and would like to tackle this too.

I just had Iron Cross do the rear aux jack mod for my radio. I did not want to bother taking it apart. They installed the jack on the back and it is very professional looking--nice clean work. Turn around time is quick also.

What is the aux jack used for on the back of the radio? I gather you just don't want to use the aux jack on the front of the radio??? I wounder if I pulled my radio and sent it to Iron Cross if they could install an aux jack on the back along with a head phone jack or if they would need the bike for the head phone jack?  :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss:  Tony???

We do not need the bike to do the headphone jack. Shoot us an email directly, or even better, give us a call. we'll explain your options.
