Here's the Deal I worked with Tilley Harley-Davidson, on my Power train Warranty.  I gave him a Fist-Full of Franklins, for my "BIG MOTOR", and a 6-Speed, and he gave me a 50/50 Warranty.  50 Feet, or 50 Years, whichever comes first!  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] Later--HUBBARD

All,

I posted this on the "Warranty Transfer" thread...but it applies here too...

CVOwner,

Funny this subject has come up on a couple of threads the last couple of days...

I don't know if there is a big difference between the 24 month standard warranty transfer and the Harley extended warranty. But, when I bought my '99 FXR2 last April the original owner had obtained a transfer form from the extended warranty office (they mailed it to him). It had a year left on it. I mailed the form in with my info and didn't give it any other thoughts.

Then, a couple of weeks ago, I noticed some oil weeping from both the front and rear rocker box gaskets. Also there was a small leak in the upper side of the outer primary gasket. So, Saturday I took the bike in and dropped it off to get the work done. I gave them all the warranty info (which doesn't expire until the end of March).

Then, late this afternoon, my stealership's service guy calls and says the the Harley extended warranty people say that the warranty transfer was never done. He wants me to call them and straighten it out. I call, and of course after getting multiple computer generated voice menus, the office is closed! So, I'll start calling again tomorrow.

I started a thread last week (on the General CVO discussion), that's a little lower down below the one you started. I'm going to post most of the info onto there as well....as it's probably going to be an ongoing saga...

It's just disappointing that the only experience I have with trying to get warranty work done at HD is this (and that's amazing considering I have a '99 roadking that had the ol' style ball bearing cam bearings).

Good luck and keep us posted...

         Ron

P.S. There was a mention of transfer costs...When I sent in my warranty transfer, there was no transfer fee. I now wish there had been some small transfer fee....I would have the cancelled check to prove they received it. Maybe a smart person would send it registered mail? Just a thought.... As an update, Chicago HD still has not replied to the second round.  I tried to call, but whoever I talked too said they don't discount. Oh well.

GRC is spot on, as usual! It's an extended service/insurance contract with a deductible.

For the dealerships it falls under sales and or finance/insurance profit center and no doubt there is a sales commision for selling them. The risk for selling the policy 'sight unseen' as far as long distance policy purchases is likely where Chicago and others are balking, it may void their agreement to not inspect the bike first for obvious problems and damage, etc. On new scooters, it's not a big issue, but on ones with some mileage and maybe even hard riding (Think so?) it is a risk to the insurer in many ways. IMHO I think they're worth it on such expensive rides, and provide some security while out on the road if something major fails, etc.

Good luck getting the discounts!

I bought the extended warranty in 2001 and it has paid for itself. New caliper, new fuel pump, new tripometer, new front wheel bearings, and new brake pads...

Huh? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Surely pads are a consumable item? - are they really covered by the warranty? - or did they just wear out real quick - or, worse, - come detached from the backing plate (had that happen before - scary [smiley=nervous.gif])

Does this mean you get free tyres for life too?? [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

If so, I want one..... [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Cheers

But that $133 presumably includes fitting & balancing so still a good deal - or is it?  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

How much to have a tyre replaced at the dealer against how much at the local tyre specialist?

I'm at my dealer on Saturday to collect my wheels which have both been replaced under warranty (peeling chrome) so I will make enquiries (into the extended warranty) then.

Cheers

Dave
