2011 110" vs. 2012 103" What's the diff?
« on: October 02, 2011, 09:01:11 PM »

I have a 2011 CVO Street Glide with the 110" and my brother just bought a new 2012 Street Glide with the 103".

What are the differences of these two motors? (not exhaust, intake etc...) Just Motor?

We think it's just bigger pistons and heads on the 110"

The only difference between a 96" and 103" is the bore size.  The 96" has a 3.75 bore and the 103 has 3.875 bore.  Same stroke - 4.375.  All other features between the 96 and 103 are the same.

The 110 is a 4.00" bore/4.375" stroke motor - but has different heads and different cams as compared to the 96" and 103" motor.

As far as the bikes go...all three are different weight, and all three have different transmission ratios...

The recent factory 103 was the greatest marketing scam from HD ever.  They advertised a 103 option and most of the general public thought SE 103.  As in the SE 103 that came in the earlier CVO's that came with heads and cams.  The current 103 is not the old CVO motor it is just your buddies 96" with a big bore kit.  Smart move on HD's part, there are still owners of Ultra limiteds with 103's that think they got a special motor because it is a Ultra "limited".

And it was scooped up like pickup truck load of crack spilled on the road in the middle of the getto :2vrolijk_21:

And even after being duped......people still line up to purchase a new Harley :confused5:

Basically, the current TC103 is to a TC96 as the older TC95 was to a TC88.  Just a larger bore and pistons in the stage 1 street legal version.  And just like with the TC95, it really isn't necessary to pay extra for new jugs.  Just have the stock cylinders bored to the correct oversize, which is all H-D does with those jugs in the kits.  So going to a 103 in the Limited or the Power Pack option basically cost H-D nothing; the cylinders don't cost them any more, and the pistons are existing off the shelf parts as well.

The 110 is a little more involved, as the cases have to be bored to accept the larger cylinder spigots, the heads are different, etc.

The 110" has 255 cams. What cams are in the 2012 103"?

Someone told me that the 110SE can fail at any moment? Is this true? My 2011 CVO SG has just over 2000km and I love this machine!

It looks like the 110 is a bad engine, when you read some of the posts on this forum.  Keep in mind that you'll only hear the problems here.  Those of us that have had no problems with our 110's don't really say anything, because there's nothing to say.  Up to the current model year, there were over 55000 CVOs with 110 engines produced since 2007.  The '07s probably had the most problems with the rear head gasket problem.  I've have 4 - 110 bikes now (07, 10, 11, and 12, still have the 11 and 12), and other than the weeping head gasket on the 07, which was fixed with the product enhancement, I've had no problems with any of my 110s.  I would venture to guess that probably less than 100 (at least on here), have had problems with their 110s.  In shear numbers, that's less than .5%.  I think with any mechanical device, it's subject to fail at anytime, not just the 110.  This holds true for your car, lawn mower, truck, whatever.  I wouldn't be afraid to own a 110.  Like I said, I've had four and I'll keep buying them.  If it breaks, that's what warranties are for.   :nixweiss:
