power locking bags
« on: December 15, 2011, 10:37:20 AM »

So the Ultras have the power locking bags, can this switch/kit be added to our bikes? is the switch mounted on the inner fairing?

I found the instructions online, but can't find anything on the HD site looking up by the part number. maybe discontinued???  You could try calling a dealer.

Expensive buggers - they are listed on LSHD's site:  $439 for saddlebag + $579 for tour pak.

Expensive, but it's real nice to be able to press 1 button and have the entire bike locked up even if the power modules take up a little space in the bags and tour pak.

Im too cheap for this one, Its way to rich for my blood.  Dont you still have to lock the ign/fork switch manually?

No.  Locks electronically along with everything else.

Could you post a pic of the unit if the bags, or at least its size? I'm already not too happy with the space the electronics in our bags take. I can probbly get over it if its not too big.

I'm not sure.  I own an Ultra so it came with the locks.

Adding that feature sounds like it would be a PITA...worse than adding the locks to the bags.

Here is the unit in the saddlebag.  Sits in the outboard aft corner and doesn't take much room.

Didn't feel like taking the lid cover off but the locking unit mounts on the lid near the latches.  It does effect putting a full face helmet in the tour pak.  It fits but needs to go an inch or 2 inboard compared to a tour pak without the power locks.

There are two different kits, one for saddlebags only, the other for saddlebags plus tour pak.  Neither kit includes the ignition lock.

To each his own, but $550 to $700 to be able to lock your bags with a button instead of a key seems a bit much.  It's not like you really need to unlock both bags and the T-P each time you decide to take a ride, like unlocking the doors on your car or truck.  How tough is it to use the key to unlock the one bag or the T-P when you need to put something in or take it out?

If you've got or can come up with an open switch hole in the fairing you can add the kit in a "roll your own" fashion.  Or you could use a three position auto-returning toggle switch and mount it anywhere you pleased.

I put the power saddlebag locks on my 05 before Harley offered any kind of retrofit kit.  Wasn't a particularly hard chore and the parts to purchase were (at least then) much less than Harley later charged for their kit.

Did the make-my-own-harness-and-use-the-Harley-parts installation back in 2007 and it's worked flawlessly since.  If interested in doing the same an install thread on the retrofit is here:

Hmmmmm.......   Wonder if the SERK project needs this someday :nixweiss: ?

My 09 FLHTCUSE4 came with them but when they fail you are out of luck in locking things up. My locks have the place to put the key in but only 1 slot for the tab on the Barrel Key, so you can insert the Barrel key and lock or unlock them but you can't lock them with the Barrel key and remove it due to the (1 slot), When you lock it and turn the key back to pull it out the bag unlocks again, needs to have 2 slots for the tab on the Barrel Key, one in the locked position and one in the unlock position.
