Oil Temp & Pressure
« on: August 05, 2006, 03:06:39 AM »

Been a bit cold lately here downunder 60 - 65 F & I am wondering about my oil temp & pressure on short rides (10 - 20 miles) the temp is only getting to about 150F & pressure is around 65psi @ 2500rpm. Just seems a bit cool & pressure a bit high (feuling pump & zipper shim) as last summer when it was around 105F with stock pump temp was running up to 230F (had no pressure gauge).
Last Sunday went about 100miles crusing at about 75mph oil temp got up to 180F & pressure ran around 50-55psi
Should I be concerned???

Cheers

Are the fluids the same (Syn3, Amsoil, Mobil, etc)? I know I just switched from Syn3 to Amsoil, and have noticed my oil temperature to be lower after. I would think with increased pressure/volume then it may make the oil a little cooler simply by the fact that larger volume of oil is circulating and not able to get as hot as before. The change of brands of fluid and mods you have made may be the reason for the difference.  I know that Amsoil (which I'm using) states that one of the benefits of using that brand is that the bike will run cooler, and that may be the same for Mobil1.

Ideally you would like to see oil temps in the 180

......BTW - I just realized that I don't know if the SE Fatboy has a factory oil cooler (brain fade getting worse).  If it does, that is one thing I would verify.  The normal operation for the thermostat on the touring coolers is "start to open at 180

I did look into a thermostat at the time of installing the cooler but was told by my stealer that that were not necessary in the climate we have. But my situation is obviously different & I will look at getting one asap. I hope I can find one that looks OK.

Fitted a new oil filter/cooler adaptor with built in thermostat today. Runs a lot better temp now, the thermostat seems to work very well. The temp got up to 200 where 2 weeks ago only got up to 150
