LED Dipstick Max. temp.
« on: August 24, 2006, 09:30:37 AM »

I calibrate electronic thermometers at work so I took my Electronic dipstick that indicates oil temp to work to see if it is accurate.  It is very accurate but only goes to 277 F or 136 C.  I realize this is hot but was surprised it didn't go to at leat 300 F.  In traffic during bike week I have seen my temp go up to the 250/260 range.  Thought others might be interested.

Thanks for the information. Along with that some other usefull information would be answers to the following questions. I know it's probably been posted somewhere before, and I just can't remember when/where or the answers.

What temperature does the oil start to break down (synthetic and regular)?

What temperature will the oil start to boil (synthetic and regular)?

d00d...I read somewhere recently that dino oil breaks down dramatically at 250, but GOOD synthetics are good to 300+

Another reason to NEVER run dino oil...

Thanks for the info, that would explain the dipsticks only going to 277. Using the dino oil as minimum and if it reaches that temp then it's time to change it.

Good to known LED thermostat accurate, had started to wonder on mine ( usually after stopping run about 235 degrees. I use amsoil which ( at least 20-50W) is theoretically stable to 400 degrees!

Hi there,
What would be the partnumber of that LCD dipstick? Is it the one with also oil level indication like 63046-07 for the touring bikes? Thinking of ordering one and was wondering if they do the job right..
Thanks,
Rob

It's the older one before they added the oil level feature.  It is the one that fits 03 touring bikes.  I would think the newer one would be accurate as well.

The newer one has the oil level indicator, plus temp.  It is well worth the money.

Newer one is great except you can't get a  level reading when cold.  I always seem to forget once underway to check the level.

Yikes!  This stick apparently vibrated loose and resulted in oil blowing out all over the pipes.  Stopped and pulled it out to see if anything had come loose on the stick itself but all was tight.  Replaced and headed back out of town.  Holiday traffic resulted in stop and go heading out of Rye AZ to Payson in 100 degree plus weather.  Bike started getting hotter and you could tell the heat management program was kicking in.  Started to hear pinging and pulled to side of road.  My oil temp reads at least 318!

$hit...  Decided to head out but ran the side of the road with my flashers on and at slow speed just to get some air flow across the engine.  A trip that normally takes 1 hour was 3 with all the traffic!  Then as I headed further up into our White Mountains, I encountered one of our Monsoons.  Usually not a problem but hate to see the lightening so close.  Upon arrival at my destination, I was down a quart of oil as a result of the blown out dipstick.  Fortunately you have to turn the stick counter clockwise to withdraw it.  If not, it probably would have been worse!

Magic|1, had that happen with mine just after I put it in for the first time.  I apparently didn't seat it all the way. Once I pushed it in real good, it's been fine, including on the dyno runs.  Sure did pump out some oil, but it was overfilled from the service anyway, so not a bad thing.  Just lots of cleanup.  I love the thing. Temp and oil level, and seems accurate.
