Three different oils used in bike - Is that odd?
« on: September 05, 2006, 05:23:53 PM »

NOT TO BEAT A DEAD HORSE BUT... [smiley=beatdeadhorse.gif]

After the install of the DD6 transmission on my FLHTCUSE I will be using THREE different types of oil - one for each cavity...

Engine = Mobile V-Twin Synth 20w50
Primary Chain Case = Mobile 1 Synth 10w40
Baker DD6 Transmission = Redline ShockProof Heavy

Baker highly recommends the Redline - but two different oils for the engine and primary chain case (was told that the V-Twin 20w50 might have issues with the clutch when cold out)...

I want the best for each cavity - am I over the top or does this make sense?  [smiley=bigok.gif]

I also use three different oils. Mobil 1 15w50 for the engine, Mobil 1 75w90 for the primary and Bel-Ray 85-140 for the tranny. It's all a matter of taste. Just get that junk SYN3 out and use a quality product. It gets pretty hot here is the South in summer, so I tend to run heavier weight lube then and thin it out some in cooler months.

Don't think you would have any problems running Mobil I Vtwin in both motor and primary.  Actually, it was designed for that very purpose.  Of course, 55 degrees is the coldest it has been since I got my bike...I'm talking sitting all night, then cold start, 1 minute warm up while I put on helmet, gloves, etc.  My clutch engagement point seems to be a little closer to the bar when the motor is coldish, then "loosens" up.  But, I don't ever just crank it up and go if the engine has sat for several hours.

Should I go with Redline MTL for the primary then (better than the Mobile 10w40) or is the Mobile 10w40 just as good (or close enough) match to the Redline MTL...

John,

Redline MTL is a GL-4 manual transmission gear lubricant, viscosity 70w80 (10w30 motor oil equivalent).  In reading thru the specs on the Redline web site, I find no mention of compatability with wet clutches.  I think I'd stick with your original choice of the Mobil MX4T.

I hope RL's products are better than their website as it is not very informative.  I emailed them twice and both times they told me to use MTL in the primary, Shockproof heavy in the tranny, and 20W50 in the motor even though they have a 20W60 that says on the website it is for "American VTwins"..  I am using all of their products.  The MTL looks like ATF fluid.

That's exactly what I use and both the Red Line folks and a racing team mechanic advised it to be the best combination.

Three types of oils for the three different holes?  What an unusual idea?  Oh wait, what did we do for years and years (and years and years and years and years) before the synthetics?  ;D
