Steering feels heavy
« on: August 12, 2013, 05:27:49 PM »

The day we picked the wife's bike up from the dealer she told me about how the steering felt on the bike. I finally got a chance to ride it and agree with her that it does feel heavy. What I am talking about is if you are riding it below 15 MPH and go to turn the front just feels heavy. It wants to fall left or right with no input from the rider. Does the bike have a steering head adjustment like my Road Glide? Does anyone know what it is? Yes I know I need to get a service manual and I will get one on order here real soon.

Thanks

Wildmanultra,

I had a Road Glide before and I would certainly describe the ConV steering as pretty nimble compared to that bike.

Well then there is something wrong with the steering on her ConV. My first Harley was a NightTrain so I do know what one should feel like just didn't know if being a CVO and having the wider front tire would make the front feel like it does. Once your up above 15 MPH the steering feels great and the bike handles fine.

Wanting to fall left or right with no input doesn`t sound normal.  I can tell you that my last bike before my CVO Softail Convert was a Softail Night Train and it handled completely differently than the new CVO.  It took me a bit to get used to.  The CVO convertible doesn`t have close to the lean angle as my old Night Train and while I am used to the new bike, I still don`t feel like I can lean into turns as agressively as I could with the old.  I guess the thinner 21 in front tire on that Night Train  makes for a *big* difference in handling.  Have your steering head bearing adjustment checked...........

Take the fairing off and try it. That thing is pretty heavy.

Tire pressure is good on it. I'll try taking the faring off and see how it is then.
