FYI - "Your GPS May Be Working Against You"
« on: November 02, 2006, 04:27:05 PM »

This article is in this months edition of Virginia Wind entitled "Beware. Your GPS may be collecting evidence against you".

Since I felt this information is important and should be available to read longer then the webpage the article is posted may host it I'm reprinting it below....

Beware. Your GPS may be collecting evidence against you.
By J. Thomas McGrath, Attorney

Beware. Your GPS may be collecting evidence against you. More and more motorcyclists today are using GPS (Global Positioning Systems) to plan trips, get directions, and keep track of miles traveled. However, keep in mind that, if you are in an accident, you may be collecting evidence that could be used against you in both a criminal and civil trial.

Many systems allow you to keep track of your speed. We at the law offices of Tom McGrath have come across jurisdictions, which, at the scene of an accident when speed is a question, will seize a crash victim

Only dOOd knows the max speed that was showing on the GPS on that fun Friday in Maggie Valley.

That speed was from a trip in the Mustang!

We took the Mustang out tonight for a spin. It needed the exercise.
Noticed that it has only been driven 1006 miles in the past 6 months.

this will get thrown out of court every time, the max speed does not have a time stamp or longitude/latitude location on it, its not even accurate.

my GPS after a trip through the smokies usually shows my max at over 200mph which we all know is impossible but as satalite reception goes in and out the GPS gets confused

and if it could be proven accurate, you could have hit that speed in a legalized controlled environment IE drag strip or race track. again big brother cannot prove when or where that max speed was recorded

The problem may be more like they look at your route and your time spent traveling said route.  Simple math gives an average speed, thereby giving somebody an edge in stating that you USUALLY travel faster than the posted speed limit.  That's all it's going to take for an insurance company to deny benefits.  Then YOU have to PROVE that you weren't speeding at the time of the accident.  It's just like the MM act.  If the moco wants to deny the warranty, they will.  Then it's up to you to prove whatever had no causational effect on the breakdown.  It all comes down to $ and who has the most to spend to "prove" their point.

Hmmm, maybe I better erase this tattletale!!!!
Oh, before anyone gets too excited, that is in KMS, converts to 109mph.

Stock bike, flat road and no headwind.

I was hoping for more but the bike was starting to dance around pretty good. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Next they'll be confiscating ECM's from the vehicles to see speed, etc...

However, if they use your track log, they can see where you were at what time and at what speed...

so do a buddy a favor, grab their GPS if you come upon an accident...delete their tracks logs

See, here is a hypothetical example...showing when, how fast and where...

1908      10/16/2006 15:08      87 ft      0.3 mi      0:00:13      87 mph      110

WFP In your hypothetical it shows top speed for 1917 start up trips. I have a Furuno navnet on the boat and after you posted this I have been playing on it to find anything like this. It will give me only a top speed for the combined track that the machine has. The Furuno las 10000 tracks at an interval of 15 seconds. Which epuates to 2500 hours=a little over 100 days if used 24 hours a day. We have our main tracks as waypoints so we can erase the tracks every day. Screen gets cluttered with track lines if you don't.
It also won't show elevation, distance, heading or Lat/Long of where this top speed happened. Is this stored in the harddrive? Do we need to do a hard restart to keep this from showing up?

Not sure what this means...1917 start up trips.

the Columns are:
reference number
date
Time
Altitude
distance
time
speed
direction
location

not sure if any is calculated by mapsource.  The track log appears to store all the above info...I used Garmin's Mapsource to retrieve the data...transfering it to the computer.

Does Furuno give you any software to store or retieve info with a computer.  I am not familiar with it.  My Raymarine RL80CRC could if I bought their software.  I can transfer routes and waypoints but never transferred tracks to C-Map PCPlanner using a usercard to transfer.

I thought the 1917 was how many times the unit was powered up. Yes Furuno has that feature, well it is another company's program that you can download or store info from the unit into my laptop via data cord. It will show all routes, waypoints and track lines that are stored in the unit, but I can't find anything like the chart you showed. I will dig deeper into it tonight. I have to do a download on the boat for a trip into Va. Need to remember where I fished last year.
