Mild build on 14 SeBreakout
« on: February 21, 2014, 01:31:33 PM »

Looking for pros and cons for part choices on a mild breakout upgrade. I have the super tuner and Bassani pro-street pipe but need to pick out other parts. My riding style is not terribly aggressive, just looking for a bit more power. Top HP is not my main concern.

Anyhow, I need to decide on:
Cam
Roller rocker
Pistons
Anything else?

My builder strongly suggests zippers dial hydronic tension and 10.5:1. so I'll go with that. He also will be doing the head work. Not really sure what to ask for or expect with the headwork. THANKS in advance for the help!! :pepper:

You will find all kinds of suggestions here. My on personal one is I would skip the 10.5's. I have a set in my bike and they really limit your cam options. Flat tops and .030 head gasket would give you a wider choice of cams

"My riding style is not terribly aggressive, just looking for a bit more power. Top HP is not my main concern."

You are going to be hard pressed to find a cam that performs like the 255 along with a good pipe & great tune.
Based on your riding profile. I know the 110 is exhaust sensitive, don't have enough experience with the Bassani for performance on the 110 other than they make some noise.

this is a mild 110 build we do a fair amount of:
mild headwork
set compression at 10.0-1
S&S .570`s
this will yield 115/125+ all day, have stock like reliability/dependability.forget the zippers tensioners & roller rockers

115/125 sounds great! any particular piston or head gasket?  Also is the compression you achieve by piston, head gasket or milling the heads?  Thank you for the feedback, I want to get this right the first time, no money for a second shot  :)

My 2014 BO has the following:

Headwork to raise CR
S&S Lifters, 551 cam, Pushrods, Roller Rockers
V&H Big Radius 2 into 2

TQ is 109 at 2000 rpm 118 at 3000 rpm and peaks 3600 rpm, 120  ftlbs
makes 85 HP at 3600 rpm

The TQ curve falls off after 4000 rpm but still 103 at 4500 rpm.

This set up gives very nice ridability.

The pipe might be somewhat of a hindrance to your build....not that familiar with it but from what I have seen very similar to some of the Sampson crap that kills power.

Decide if you want to do a bolt in cam or if you want to remove the heads or not.

If not keep the 255 as there isn't anything that is much of an upgrade @ stock compression.

If the heads are going to come off there are a multitude of things you can do and it all depends on budget.

There is nothing wrong with the zippers dual tensioners, nor the bypass kit you can purchase with them and they do seem to work as advertised.

heads can be milled to 10.0-1 (using .030 cometic gaskets),getting your build right the first time is nice, dollar wise.do your homework and realisticly come up with the build your looking for

Can't thank you guys enough for the help!   Really narrowing this down

mild headwork - not sure what to ask for here
set compression at 10.0-1 - with above head work and cometic .030 gasket
Pistons:  not sure what to look for here, should they be forged, flattop ect?
Cams:  S&S .570 or other suggestion?
zippers tensioners
roller rockers: S&s

Yes, precision cylinder head re-surfacing to establish the desired cc's.
That .570 combo is one we have used here on several occasions as well.
With the exhaust timing on that cam, it'll cool that engine off also.
Works well.

Definitely going with s&s .570 based on feedback. 10:1 sounds like a good choice as well. Any particular pistons??

Hoping to start in next 2 weeks.

Last question.....so what is downside of higher compression say 10.8?  This is what my builder is favoring. Achieved by head work and pistons. Thanks in advance!

10.8-1 opens up choices to a lot more cams and way bigger power, some guys don't want that much compression, but youde be looking at 120-125+ easy with the right cams & headwork

At 10.8, your a shoe-in for a Wood 8, for example.

Finally pulled the trigger on this modest build. Let me know if I missed anything. Should have charts end of next week.  Thanks for all the input!!

Bassani pro-street
Fueling 574 cam
Screaming eagle head gasket
10.5 screaming eagle pistons
Zippers dual tensioner and oil bypass
SE pro tuner
Hydrolic tappets (bike has 1300 miles, do they need replaced?)

That cam does not work well with the stock heads
Provided you got the RIGHT cam a set of beehive springs should be part of this package
should add some lifters to this package....the stock lifters are junk
10.5-1 is too much compression for that cam
you don't need to replace the pistons and if you did for a build like this .010 over stock 110 se/mahle pistons would be a better bet.
Get a TTS tuner....much better tuning device

:pepper:

I threw the screaming eagle high compression piston kit 10.5 with 259 cam. I'm impressed, great mid range bike. I'm waiting to get the break in period done before I stick it on a dyno. I'll keep you guys posted on the results. Any route you go on the compression bump make sure you run the high octane fuel. There is allot of options out there, do your research pull the trigger.

Good Luck Keep us posted.....

Sticking with 10.5 piston and still struggling with cam choice. S&S sent me the attached. Looks like the 585 performs like the se259. I'd still rather see more torque early. I'm just not a top hp kinda guy

At that compression your right in the wheel house for the TR-590 for big low end tq or the TR-625 for a more balanced package based on my experience with both.

Hi Lenny J.

I've been looking at these Forums for a while in regards to the 110 Motor upgrade. I am no expert on this Forum, but for what I have seen and learnt so far, this is the best option for what you are looking for in my humble opinion..

1. Leave your bike as it is with the SE 255 Cam. Take your bike to a competent tuner and you will achieve a cooler running Motor with a slight increase in performance. This is cheap and will make your bike a different beast to ride. You will have a slight increase in TQ and Power with this option. The SE 255 Cam makes your Motor run hot, but a good tune will fix this problem.. The SE 255 Cam is hard to beat for low end TQ..

If you want a big increase in low down TQ and Power and have a reliable build and want to spend some money having compression set at 10.5/1, consider doing the following;

2. Install a set of GMR 577 Cams. Install a set of either SE or Mahle 10.5 HC Pistons, have your Heads Port and a polished and while your there, have them install bigger intake valves and install some Beehive Springs.  Install either a HPI/SE or S&S 58 mm Throttle Body with with 5.3 Injectors. You should install an upgraded clutch as well because of the increased performance to your Motor. This upgrade suits the 110 Motor and gives great TQ and Power results over the SE 255 Cam at low RPM (2,000 RPM), and a big increase of both TQ and Power throughout the Higher RPM range.. You should also change out your Lifters ( S & S Premium Lifters) and replace your Cam bearings while your Motor is being worked on.. According to Steve from GMR, you can use the Stock Push rods with this cam..This upgrade will give your 110 Motor a big increase in performance and make it reliable for a "Mild build".

Take a look at some of the Dyno results in this Section..

Best regards..

We'll I had to get moving so I skipped the headwork for this year. Went with SE 10.5 pistons zippers tensioner axel bypass and s&s 585 cam. I've got the fueling lifters but will trade for s&s premiums if I have time. Build starts tomorrow. If I can't get the lifters in this year I'll put them in this fall when it's apart for the headwork.
