Title: Cigar
Post by: Ceej on July 15, 2007, 10:02:58 PM
I thought I'd start a thread as it seems we have several cigar smokers here and many folks of fine taste. That being the case I figured this would be the place to ask for expert advise. I have smoked a few cigars in my day especially on the golf course. Now that I no longer smoke cigarettes - 10 months now smoke free, I am more interested in the occasional cigar for true relaxation and around the campfire with all my smoking compadres. I have tried a few drug store brands and have found the AyC Grenadiers my favorites thus far - until I ran across the Cigar Dave radio show on XM radio - this led me to a special offer on Monte Cristo's - WOW - these are some smooth and tasty cigars that got my attention and I am wondering what you cigar vets can offer as to advice regarding a good cigar out there. When a novice like me walks into a Cigar shop it can be very intimidating, so help a bro out......What's your favorite Cigar's - Two categories - daily smoke and once in a while indulgence.  ;D

Now you are right up my alley... :2vrolijk_21:

I like Padron they are a mid-bodied cigar and are not too expensive...they do have two specials though that are AWESOME and have the price to match--1964 and 1924 (I believe)

As a rule the Dominicans tend to be a little more mild with the Hondurans and Nicaraguans a bit more mid to full bodied (there are exceptions of course)

The darker the wrapper the longer/hotter the age and the more sugar that is forth coming (not necessarily sweeter or less body) hence the name maduro or ripe/aged as in bananas when they get ripe they are more maduro than when they are green.

There are tons of good cigars out there and many depend on when you smoke them how you feel about them, i.e. after dinner (heavy vs light) or what you are having them with (a good port, cognac, scotch/whiskey, coffee/cafe', etc)

Many times price equates to prestige/quality/brand not necessarily taste.  If you would like a nice FuFU cigar which is hand made and is wonderful for those "I don't want a hang-over" smoke the CAO Moontrance is nice (flavored and sweet).  CAO makes some real nice cigars and they have some "ethnic" types that are interesting Italian, Brazilian just to mention a couple.  I could go on and on because I have had so many wonderful cigars and my tastes change over time.  Hoyo de Monterey are good too.  I am kinda student of them too since my wife is Cuban it is a n education in and of itself.  I can go on and on but I will wait to see what some of the other SEEGARSMKRS out there think.

I like Aturo Fuente Cubanitos.  Nice mellow smoke, small and doesn't take an hour and half to smoke.  I don't have the time or patience for those big churchills!

I know what you mean about the big ones! I drive a truck, and when on the road I need a Lil something in the afternoon, that is the worst time for a driver - especially me since I haul oversize and can only drive daylight hours. So, I have found the pleasure of looking forward to an afternoon cigar. I have been trying some called "Blenders Gold" Lonsdale's and Panetela's. I  like the Lonsdale better, but these are very inconsistent cigars. 4 or 5 of the 10 pack will be excellent smooth and even burning, the others are junk. Of course these come from Walgreen's and I am just starting out so can't expect miracles, but dang these Monte Cristo's are fantastic. So, maybe it's time I step and get a Humidor, or two, one for the truck and home. I am taking notes guys and will be trying out what you reccomend, so keep the tips coming!

Macanudos or Monte Cristo's....you can't go wrong.  I love the Macs and they don't have near the 'bite' that Romeo & Juliet's do, etc. Found a place in FL (http://www.neptunecigar.com) that offers 'starter' variety selections of most name brands so that you can choose a couple favorites. Also fairly decent prices on boxes when on sale.
 :drink:
Good luck!
Joe

P.S. Check with Mike L. (previously know as Cigar Mike) he was into cee-gars big time before quittting.

Flavor, body ( strenth), draw, burn and ash are things in cigars to notice.  Everybody has different tastes but the smokes need to be easy to draw on and well constructed to burn well.

My favorite is the Padron Anniversario 1926#1 Maduro...Pricey, but a superb hour and half smoke.  Really good.
The Padron Principe is a good rider, it tunnels in a little and does not go out often while riding.  All in all the Padron Anny series are great 1926 and 1946, #2 Bellicoso, #9 both in maduro for me... These are my favorites.

The Ashton Cabinet series are nice mild smokes although I prefer the Aston VSG series (Bellicoso, Torpedo)....Ruddy and strong..These are my daily smokes and always in the bike on a ride.  They are made by Carlos Fuentes, most of those smokes are pretty decent.

Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 and 1990, make a nice mild smoke with decent flavor and a mild easy draw.  They also have the Old World Reserve which is really nice too, super easy draw...

Recently I smoked some Padilla's, the 1832, I think...., it was excellent for the money...

There are lots of gimmicky marketing things out there and some people love em.. Whatever makes you happy I say.
My only B!tch is the flavored cigars....I don't quite get why you would smoke a cigar flavored like, I don't know.  I like great cigar flovered cigars.  The picture is of me in Honduras on a cigar smoking rampage!

My pal likes Macanudos, mild..Perdomo Champagnes are nice, I have some a late nite smoke or early in the AM.  Perdomo makes a lot of nice mild cigars, well built, good flavor, nice body.

Get a humidor, look for one that shuts nice and even...A good humidor will runs a few bucks but they are worth it..
I use a old wine fridge because I buy by the box and will usually have 10 -20 boxes in the house.  I lined it with clear spanish cedar 3/8 boards to help with humidity...the most important thing for smokes...Humidity around 65-70% and temps below 75 F, to keep the beetles from hatching.

Its bad enough you are constantly taking money out of my pocket to feed my OCD.  Now you just caused me to go and order a couple of sampler packs to take on my Sturgis trip.  And yes I had to order them on-line.  Hard to find good cigars in Joplin, MO.  Surprising huh.   :nixweiss:

Miker,
Great cigar pics!

People are always surprised to find out that western Massachusetts and Connecticut grow a lot of tobacco of course with all the laws in this state we can't smoke anywhere. I'm pretty sure that the tobacco grown here is mostly for wrappers.

Some fine wrappers from up theya.....They are an important part of the smoke.
I'll be up in Beatown 4-6 August visiting my little Irish mum.
I grew up in Allston, Ma....Miss it sometimes and lots of friends in Mansfield, Boston, Uxbridge, Franklin.
Pretty nice riding when you can.  Someday when I am up for more than a weekend I'll try and get a rental to tool around on.  Paramount HD in Framingham does rentals don't they?

As far as your local cigar store, my pre-cuban days were Fuente Anejo's, any of the Hemmingway line, and especially the Don Carlos robustos, OpusX is a very strong cigar but probably the best non-cuban you will get your hands on in the states.....omg, Im starting to drool while typing, this thread should be deleted !!!!!

Holy Chit!!  I can buy a pound of Pipe Tobacco and smoke for a month every night for what one of those cost!!  I'll bet they are good though... :2vrolijk_21:

Does anyone have any recommendations for a smaller cigar in the 4 to 5 inch size and about the diameter of a typical middle finger?  I enjoy the pipe most, but would like a good cigar at times.  TIA

About the only thing I like about cigars is they smell so good before they're lit.  I could set up shop in a walk in humidor.  Really smells good in there.  But once the fire is put to them, my eyes start watering, and I start gagging.  ACK!

You really need a humidor...but you can make one yourself.  Get a plastic container either a 6 pack cooler, or tupperware or something...then get a small one about the size of a tuna can.  Get a sponge without extra chit in it and then buy some distilled water.  Cut the sponge place in the small container pour water in and set in the larger container place cigars in there...done.  Open to refresh the air every couple of days should be around 70% humidity and 70 degrees.  What ever you do...NO REFRIGERATORS.  Cold air loses its humidity.  The wrapper inside the metal tube is spanish cedar it helps the cigar age.  You can take it out and line your homemade humidor after you use it and it does the same job.  Another way to make a humidor is double ziplock bags one big and one small paper towel and distilled water...same concept only keep the small one open or poke holes to approx 70% humidity...make sure your smokes are firm but moist.

Seegarz,

The cooler/tupperware idea works great, but Rog if you're in a bind, a zip lock bag with just a couple of drops of distilled water works and doesn't take up any room in the bike. As long as you don't leave them in there for more than a few days it works fine. I used to keep them that way when I took them on vacation with me. My humidor is now the place where my watches and passports reside.

Monte Cristo makes some smaller ring sizes that have a mild taste, a nice draw and smoke. You really can't go wrong with the entire Monte Cristo line.

Thanks, Ed...I know a bit about Pipes and Tobacco, but know as much about Cigars as a cat knows about a shotgun...I will check out the Monte Cristos.  I'm trying to get off the cigarettes, and back on the pipe/cigars, as I do not inhale that smoke.  I've always enjoyed the pipe, but have been a "closet" pipe smoker since I was in my teens.  Now I figure I'm old and gray enough to be able to get away with it out in public. ;) ;)

Ed :pepper:

No doubt the mass market cigarettes are probably the worst possible thing to smoke...there are over 600 ingrediants in a typical Marlboro, Basic, etc, and most include "free base nicotine", which is like doing crack instead of coke.  More addictive.

A good pipe of tobacco, or good cigar is generally only residually inhaled, the tobacco is not full of chemicals, and pipe tobacco smells good to other people, in most cases.  Even the good cigarettes, like Nat Sherman Naturals, are VERY different in taste/effect than a "typical" brand.

That's my rationaliztion, and I'm sticking to it... ;)

I got a cutter, so now i can enjoy a clean cut end, any tips on cutting? I also got a few Punch, Padron and a Macanudo sampler pack. So far the Monte Cristo's are my favorite, the Punch wasn't bad, I am looking forward to the padron and macanudo's this weekend.  :)

Cigars are lot like the our bikes, its what you like that counts.....I just finished a Padron 64 anny torpedo, wonderful smoke, draw, burn and strong enough to stand up to a bourbon.

On a perfect riding day, smal ring gauge ( width)  milds I like after breakfast, like a Ashton Cabinet or Perdomo Champagne....Later in day ( if it the right kind of day) A Padilla or Aston ASG, stronger. A factor I still am workin through is what smokes well in the saddle, to be continued( so far it is thr padron pricipe. In the evening, after Scrimps n Grits, alittle sour mash and a strong Padron maduro, but like beer a free smoke is always purty damn good too. Peace

Can one of you experts do a quick run down on sizes and the terms? What's up with these huge suckers? Do you smoke just half or something? How much do you cut the end - is it diff with the pointy ones?

...This looks age old past time seems a lil hi-tech :)

Sizes and names have changed with the times the thing that hasn't changed is ring gauge and length.  You can figure out length on your own.  Ring gauge is a bit different...they fractions of an inch with a 64 being an inch in diameter.  The names of the sizes are kinda relative but panatellas are usually 6" or less with a small ring gauge 38 ish.  Robustos are usually short 5" with a fatter ring gauge around 50.  Toros are a bit longer with the same gauge as a robusto, then we have Churchills named for...you guessed it.  They are a longer smoke usu 7-7.5 but are 38-40s in gauge.  They have made double Churchills now too and they are thicker.  There are gordos which means fat in spanish so use the length and gauge to tell you.  There are also some funky shapes, torpedos which are like the cartoon with small ends on both sides.  There are figurados which have a point on one end and open on the other.  I personally like figurados the best, but it is a personal choice.  When you cut a cigar you can use a punch, guillotine or scissor cutters (I personally would avoid using Gods cutters unless no other choice) razor blades can work but be careful.  When you cut a cigar with either a scissor cutter (difficult to get used to) or a guillotine aim for the shoulder.  The part where the wrapper rounds toward the end (cap), should only be maybe an eighth of an inch no more.  A punch needs only to puncture the cap (outer layer of tobacco) because if you go to deep and you like to keep it in your mouth it will have issues.  If you are interested in a guillotine (my choice) opt for a double guillotine...my favorite cutter is the Zino Davidoff double guillotine.  A double guillotine has blades on both sides which don't pinch the cigar and usually have a sort of self sharpening property.  I can go on and on but I will stop there for now.

Here is some information from the web:

Cutting

The closed end (or head) of a cigar is the end that you put into your mouth, but you have to cut it, first. When a cigar is hand rolled, a cap is put on the head of the cigar to keep it from unraveling and drying out. A cigar should not be cut until you are ready to smoke. There are three styles of cuts, and several types of cutters, but the straight cut made with a guillotine cutter is the most common. Hold the cigar with one hand and the guillotine with the other, then insert the head of the cigar into the guillotine and cut into the cap, usually about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch down. If the head of the cigar is shaped like a cone, then cut into the cone, but not quite at the widest part. In any case, do not cut into the body of the cigar. That would cause the wrapper to unravel, and ruin your smoking experience.
No Cigar Cutter?
The most primitive way of cutting the head of a cigar with absolutely no tools is to bite it with your teeth. This is a last resort, and should never be done with an expensive premium cigar, as the cigar is much more valuable than a basic cutter. Biting a cigar, or otherwise cutting it improperly, will cause the wrapper to unravel, and could even damage the binder and filler tobacco inside. If available, use a sharp knife and a cutting board, or a pair of sharp scissors. You can also use a pen or pencil to punch a hole in the cap. If the cigar costs more than $5, do not cut it until you have a cigar cutter. It will be worth the wait.

How to Light a Cigar
After being cut, the cigar is now ready for lighting. Butane lighters or wooden matches are recommended. It is important not to introduce chemicals or other flavors or substances into the cigar as it is being lit (never use a scented candle). There are many types of lighters on the market, but butane torch lighters work the best outdoors, especially on a breezy day.
Puff and Rotate
Light your lighter with one hand, then grip your cigar around the band (or about an inch or two from the head) using your thumb, index finger, middle finger, and ring finger (if necessary), and place in your mouth. Position the end of your cigar just above the top of the flame, being careful not to let the cigar actually touch the flame. Begin puffing on the cigar, then slowly begin to rotate the cigar while continuing to puff.

Now I figure I'm old and gray enough to be able to get away with it out in public. ;) ;)

Terry,

If you are into pipes then you will probably enjoy a flavored cigar like The Acid Blondie by Drew Estates. Great smell and very flavorful. Lots of "hard core" smokers bash the Drew Estates Line, but I enjoy the change every now and then from a "regular" cigar.

You can build that vision Travis.  Even include the full sized Greyhound dog luxuriatingly stretched out on the rug next to the overstuffed leather chair.  But it all goes suddenly and shatteringly to hell when that damn bird starts squawking and cussing from the back room!

OK...I have to admit, I've got the overstuffed Burgundy leather chair...I might even admit to having a pair of silk pj's. And I've got the Regal 90 lb Greyhound... Substitute the Brandy for a Premium chilled Tequila with a good beer chaser.  I've never had a jacket just for smokin', but I'm open to new things.  The Ascot...nope, nada, no way jose.

Travis...I have NO idea why you're getting these visions.  What have YOU been smokin'...when I smoke that chit, I usually ended up naked at some point.... :2vrolijk_21:

Will cigars keep in the metal tube with the bark for any length of time in a cool area or must one have a humidor?

Rob, if you need a Humidor, I have one you may have, its nothing fancy, but its free, those metal tubes are only for short time use. Id trade ya for just 1 of those cohibas  ;D I plan on smoking 1 cigar when I win a major Hold em event.

Had a trip up to Maine last week so I stopped by a my local Cigar shop and picked up a Padron, a Punch, a 3 pak of Macanudo ( Robusto, Cafe, and Maduro ) and a handful of some brand I never heard of that the shopkeeper said was a good priced, solid smoke - Flor de Oliva. I also got a guillotine cutter - much better than the scissor and knifes I had been using. The Punch was probably my least favorite, though not bad by any means, the Padron I truly enjoyed as I did all three of the Macanudo's, especially the Maduro. The kicker was I really, really liked the off brand Flor de Oliva, unbelievably even the girlfriend likes these and the smell also - which makes life better. I still think I might like the Monte Cristo's the best followed by these. These are 5x50 - which I assume is 5" with a 50 ring gauge, seems a tad big but not bad. From reading the cutting tips, it seems I  haven't cut enough off. What are the reasons behind the "punch a hole" method? I need to get a humidor, figured I'd be ok for now in the garage and truck cupboards as I they have been pretty close to 70/70 but that won't last. When you put them in the Humidor should they be removed from the individual plastic wrappers?

Does size matter? For example if I like a certain smoke - can I expect a different size model to be the same?

The flor is a nice smoke!  Pardon too!   My fav is the Anniversario 1926 #1 Maduro from Padron, box pressed
(square around $25) You may find the maduro wrapped smokes a little "sweet", they are my preference for most cigar as well as sun grown wrapper, thick and leathery with a deep body.

When cutting the cigar you only need to remove the cap, just a smidgen.  If it is a torpedo, then it is a matter of how tight a draw you like...Hole punching is for larger ring gauges, I use a vee cutter for my Rocky 60's, they are like smoking a ham hock ,but I like em sometimes, most Rocky Patels are nice medium smokes, especially the vintage 1992.

Some people remove the wrappers and some don't , I don't because I don't like to handle the cigars until I light em and in my big humidor I just put the whole boxes...The table top humidor is used for for loose smokes, oddballs and aging singles.  Again if they are wrapped I leave em, if not I have them in a tray in the humidor.  A bunch of different smokes, unwrapped in the same humidor, will blend flavors over time mind you.   Its what you like, enjoy!

I dropped a wet (slightly) paper towel in a Zip lock bag with them still in their tubes and by the time we smoked them I do believe it moistened them ever so slightly.

Anyway I wish I could rcall the brand but those babies were tight and good.  They could sure hold an ash, I think they are Cohiba's.

Anyway, great day, great golf and a great cigar, only thing missing was a good ride..........

I keep coming back to the 858s myself but they are hard to find.  Have you tried the curly heads?  It's the same tobacco as the 858s (and 1/2 the price) but the they are made from the left over long leaf filler and it gives them a twisty look.

I need some advise!  My problem is I don't know a good cigar from a bad one.  What I've been doing up until now is just picking up a few different cigars each time I go to the tobacco store and giving um a try.  So far my favorite is a Macanudo Hampton Court.  Very mild.

Any suggestions from our resident cigar experts (Miker, Robmay, MJZ, etc.)?

I don't usually smoke a mild cigar but Perdomo Champagne is a nice one.

Nicely built....smokes easy and even  good price.

My favorites are Ashton VSG, medium bodied and Padron 1926 maduros, yum.

All of them above plus are great......I find Cigars much like Wine
not real hard to find good Cigars if you are willing to spend some coin, but the real trick is finding a great Cigar that you like that doesn't cost 25.00/stick
I personally like most of the ones mentioned but like to splurge on reserve when I can get them.

RobMay, whatchu like for a smoke....?

For an everyday smoke
http://www.niceashcigars.com/Brands/232/LaViejaHabana.aspx?BY=1,2,3,4

A friend of mine got me stuck on these recently
http://www.coronacigar.com/products/Hookha_Tropical_Cigars_pid329_cid7.html
Thay are mild and have a very good burn and flavor, especially for the price. Some pricier flavored are the Blondies by Drew Estates and the Kuba Kuba (which is like a big ass blondie). Also, the Ambrosia Vann Reef is a great smelling, tasting, buring smoke as well.

As far as non flavored I like Romeo Julieta
http://www.coronacigar.com/pc_Romeo_y_Julieta_1875_pid152.html

Don Pepin
http://www.coronacigar.com/pc_601_Cigars_by_EO_Brands_pid428.html

And most CAO's. I actually had a couple of the Soprano's that I really liked
http://www.coronacigar.com/pc_CAO_The_Soprano_Edition_Cigars_pid468.html

I've got a box of the Belisco size of the Africa's sitting in the humidor and have been for about 8 months now

I may be a little late to post on this but a good cigar shop should not be itimidating imo . I am new to the sport of smokin the stogies and the shop I went to asked me questions about what I like then sold me a few cigars, then he gave me a few more to try( good move for him). Now I buy way to many and I  had to get a humidor and all the stuff like a lighter, cutter etc.I need( kinda like ocd). Had he not been so helpfull like some other snob shops(what I call them) I might not enjoy smoking as much as I do.

I must concur...

Perdoma Habano great smoke - natural and maduro, Lately I have been enjoying Kristoff - both Natural and Maduro - and my fav would be the Padron 1964 - these are pretty limited - if you see one grab one - they are pricey but you get what you pay for and they are a great great smoke! (though I do like most Padron's also).

Also enjoy a sweet coffee smoke once in a while - try Java by Drew Estate.

A sweet small smoke - try Jucy Lucy - by Acid - a Drew Estate company.

my all time fav would be Perdomo Cuban Parejo though it has been yaers since its been made and hard to get a hold of.....

Title: Cigar's - Good ones vs. Bad ones
Post by: Ditch on February 01, 2009, 10:23:20 AM
IMHO... There are a few that I like to sit back and sip a Lil whiskey with or just enjoy the company of good friends with.
1st) Kristoff - Maduro (Medium to Mild flavor, hand rolled with the leave wrapped around on both end  vs. being smoothed down or cut off.)
2nd)  Cohiba from Republica Dominicana - (Almost any of them Mild to Bold)
3rd) CAO - Soprano's version Torpedo's (Great smoke if you have the time to sit around an shoot the chit, nice draw and great flavor. Downside is I have been told they are going out of production since the show has ended.)

A new one I just bought a couple boxes of are called Cuban Bullet .454 they are only about 2 1/2" long, but are great for a quick smoke or a quick bar hop across town on bike night. :pimp: :pimp: :pimp:

I'm sure some us out there smoke the occasional cigar. Which ones are some good ones and which ones are some bad ones?

:mango:As you can see, I'm rather attached to one brand (even though there are many different smokes). Frankly, I've had better cigars (Cuban Monte Cristo #2's and Cuban Cohiba Robusto's come to mind) but OpusX's are one of the finer non-Cuban cigars out there. My wife and I struck a deal several years ago that I can smoke 5 cigars a year (don't need another addiction).

I'm not really that much of a cigar lover but I came across a celebration ceremony involving cigars, fine port and fine chocolate that I utilize on special occasions. I've celebrated in Rio De Janeiro; Brasilia; Dublin, Ireland; on a yacht in the Peugeot Sound; in the mountains outside LA and several other memorable locations. The gig involves taking a bite of fine dark chocolate and getting that to coat the inside of your mouth, now, take a sip of fine port and swish that around a bit. You now have an alcoholic chocolate covered cherry in your mouth. Now take a puff off a fine cigar. The port and chocolate tone down the smoke a bit and you have a fine mixture of tastes and scents.

My older sister taught me years ago that the strongest sense we have for triggering memories is our sense of smell. Therefore, if you want to create a lasting memory, be sure to involve as many of your senses as possible but be sure one of them is your sense of smell. The cigar smoke and the smell of the port really anchors the occasion in your brainium. I preplan these events and, if I can make it down to Arkansas for the 10 year celebration, rest assured I will bring some smokes, port and chocolate along as it will definately be a time to celebrate and create some lasting memories!
