Foot-Pounds or Pounds-Feet
« on: March 06, 2007, 12:14:40 PM »

I've always known torque to be measured as foot-pounds, inch-pounds or newton-meters. I've been watching more Spike on the weekends, and I just can't get used to hearing pounds-feet used for measuring torque. It just sounds so odd to me. I can see that pounds-feet is analagous to newton-meters, but it still sounds odd to me.

Has it always been this way, bolt torque is ft-lb and performance is lbs-feet?

The calculation is different for measurements of power/force or ballistics.  But it's still just a kinetic energy measurement.  Same force could be reported in other measures as well (joules, etc).  But foot-pounds or pounds-feet; a rose by any other name....

The pound feet thing is something that is usually measured after your ride breaks down.

I found mention that the difference is to avoid confusion with energy calcs.

Makes sense, but doesn't sound natural. Too long using ft-lb I guess.
