California Wildfires....
« on: October 22, 2007, 12:50:52 PM »

Just wanted us to remember our members that may be affected/in harms way of the fires that are devastating the west now. I talked to Brian (Spiderman) this morning and the fires are getting close to his home. So close that he has packed up all their belongings he can carry and is awaiting the evacuation notice. Please keep him and all the rest of those affected by these fires in your thoughts and prayers.

SoCal members, let us NorCal people know what, if anything, we can do to help.

Personally, I can accomodate someone if they need a place to stay

sheesh!   My dad got evacuated yesterday mid-day,  my sister later last night,  my uncle in the wee hours this morning, (but he's still arguing about it), and my grandfather yesterday afternoon, (and he just refused to leave on the spot.)  I think they called the cops and had someone haul him off, (he's 92),  but I haven't fheard for sure yet.

sounds like a regular party down there!    :confused5:

Just got off the phone with BB. The FD just came and told him to evacuate his home. I will be keeping my fingers crossed that they can stop the fires. I will be praying for you and your family Bro and all others that are being affected from this. The bike is safe and Linda was taking the personal possesions such as family pictures and documents and were loading what they could into their vehicles.  L&R Bro,Q

This is no joking matter. I seriously hope you're spared from this unfortunate event Brian. It must be difficult dealing with this, since you have no control over the final chapter. I hope you and your family remain safe, and can return to your home as quickly as possible.

I'll post a picture of a tanker dropping fire retardant about 1 mile from our home.  We had the sheriff stop by our house for a "precautionary" evacuation.  We just stayed put as the fire was under control and was heading in a southwesterly direction away from us.  Loads of smoke and ash.  We had the trucks face out on the driveway and had our 8 dogs prepared for immediate departure if required.  Our prayers are with the folks that were under mandatory evacuations.  I have a trailer if anyone needs help.  Let me know.

Here's what we saw from the front yarrd.  These pilots are amazing and courageous flying in 30-50 MPG winds gusting to 70MPG, truly amazing.  This is about 1 mile from our home.  If you've been following the news, there are several fires going all over the state.  The good news is that this one has been put out.

OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so sorry to hear about these wildfires and to know they are threatening the family of friends of our fellow CVOHarley brothers and sisters is heartbreaking.  I'm on the other side of the continent, but if a bed, shower, and a vehicle is of value to any of you, please holler.

Hey everybody.
Things are still very iffy and at any moment we could get chased out again, but Linda and I and Mickey (our dog) are back in our house and have not suffered much. LD is in the middle of the local Walmart parking lot, locked, alarmed and covered. The truck and car are still packed and we are ready to leave on a moment's notice. We were with Beagle's wife Susie, but that area was evacuated as well. Susie is at a friends home near the ocean in a safe area. So far the damage for us is related to ash, soot etc. My yard is a mess, the pool will have to be drained and scrubbed, the filter system and pumps were left on and got clogged and burned out. All very very minor stuff compared to those that have lost their homes, those like Brandon and Kerry who were away and may return to nothing. At least when we left we took two vehicles full of precious memories with us and as I said they are still packed and ready to go. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone of our CVO family and all residents of the SoCal area undergoing this. While we learned a lot from the fires of 4 years ago, there is no getting used to this. There were moments of near dispair yesterday as it seemed the fire was boxing us in and we had no escape route. Luckily I caught a very accurate John Coleman on TV and he explained the wind patterns, pinpointed the exact areas that were burning and using a computer model predicted where the fires were headed. After seeing that we returned home. At the moment, we have Mickey's instincts ( he paces and whines when things get bad) and my dust meter. I keep a small area clean on the patio and if the fire starts in this direction the ash and soot that blows in advance of the fire will cover that area quickly and we'll be gone again. Thank you every single one of you for all your well wishes and prayers. Please extend those to everyone in the SoCal area. Also to our brothers and sisters in the New Orleans area which is once again getting the worst of the weather.

Brian,

So very glad to hear from you, we were all getting very worried. Hopefully you will not have to evacuate again, but it sounds like you are ready if you have to. I can only imagine what that place looks like right now, probably a war zone.

Brian,
Glad to hear you're OK and Beags must be right behind you. Candy's kids were awakened at 4AM yestereday and were given 10 mins to evaulate thier places. They're now stuck on the nearly closed freeways trying to get North to LA.
What a mess, and her son is supposed to be getting married next week and their stuff is in thier house of course.
Lesson they learned is to keep a bag packed and essential papers in one spot ready to go. Easier said than done.

BB, glad to see your post and update.  Glad to hear things are passable for the time being.  We'll hope it stays that way and conditions improve for everyone.

AK, we're pullin' for the kids as well.  Safe travel to you on your return home.

Hey Rog,
Maybe you can explain this. The first thing to go in my truck yesterday morning as we were packing to leave was my Dad's Model 70-270 Winchester  :nixweiss:

Well, pretty simple in my mind, some things are simply priceless and those are some good memories you have attached to the piece.  It would be a tragedy to loose it.

My dad passed on 2 years ago. He had a Model 70 winchester in the 243 caliber. To me, that's just his rifle still. My son has it now.

B B,
Renea and I wish the very best for you and all members of our CVO family affected by these fires.  This is a seriously terrible predicament, and all I can do is pray for your's and your family's wellbeing and safety.
I'd like to ask the CVO family to keep Mike, Charlie and their families in your thoughts and prayers.  Mike and Charlie are co-workers of mine, working on my project.  Charlie was evacuated yesterday, and learned today that his home was destroyed.  I spoke with Mike this morning, and he is currently in the same situation as B B.  Mike and his wife are dealing with this situation after having suffered the dispair of the recent death of their son after a terrible fall.  Work be damned!!  I'm concerned for my friends, so please keep them and their families close in your thoughts and prayers.

Thanks very much.

Vaya con Dios Mi Amigos y Amigas

And a FYI concerning our friend Mr. Spiderman.
In the rush to evacuate his phone was dropped and smashed.
If we are lucky it's working and we can talk with him.  But if you call him and just get his Voice mail and he doesn't return your call I'm betting it's not working. He will keep us informed on this site.
Hang in there buddy!

I have a buddy in Ramona with no water and electricity that was told to evacuate yesterday. He refuses to go because he will have only one trip out and won't be able to get back in again. He had to choose between getting his new GTO or his Harley out and can't make the choice. I talked to him again tonight and told him with my Sheriff ID I could help him, so the the real reason finally came out, there is mass looting going on in the evacuated areas. He stands to loose everything from fire or looting so he chose to stay. I saw patients from the Lake Arrowhead area today and they say the same thing is happening up there...no one in or out because of the looting.  :soapbox: This chit sucks !! I'm taking a couple days off to help the tankers land in the lake in front of my house and the offer still holds for anyone who needs shelter from the fires. We have a large living area below the house with enclosed bike parking. A family of four could be comfortable there, and yes I'll take out the adult magazines and calanders.

Hey Doc, just curious.......how are you assisting the tankers landing in front of your house?  Keeping the area clear of boat traffic?  Are the tankers picking up water from your lake?  Good luck to all of you in this tough time.  :2vrolijk_21: spyder

I'm the vice commander of Lake Elsinore Marine Search and Rescue (LEMSAR). We will secure the lake from recreational boaters and ferry personnel to a platform that the tankers hook up to. While it's hooked up it fills its tanks with water and takes off again.  I'll take pictures if this all comes about. We have had tankers that just scoop the water up without landing and choppers pickup , but never anything like this before.

Hopes and prayers that today brings no winds and an end to this horrible devastation. My baby sis isn't in an evac zone but her son's school is (6 miles from where they live). She's fighting the soot and smoke pretty hard though. They also don't have A/C and have to keep the windows closed so their breathing isn't impaired. It was over 80 degrees.

I know this isn't a big deal compared to what others have faced and are facing. It just brought a reality to it that it's hard to understand just how bad it is from here. Apparently it's the largest mandatory evacuation ever and at least as of this morning 1,800 homes have been destroyed.

Here's hopes and prayers that the winds die down, that the firefighters continue to be  safe and that everyone involved in this disaster have seen the worst of it so the healing can begin.

Jimmy, we are praying, have been praying and will continue to send prayers, for you, and all the people that are living in what must appear to be that burning inferno.  We are also keeping the prayers aloft for those that are working in whatever capacity to assist, save, free and protect all the people and their belongings.  I'm glad you got your bikes out, job well done.  Let's just hope everyone makes it out alive and well.  Belongings can be replaced.  People's lives and limbs can not.

Keep the faith.  It will help you be as strong as you will need to be today and all the days coming till the fires are out and all the cleanup and repairs are done.

Wow, those are impressive aircraft, and what a payload they can carry. What a shame that bureaucratic bullchit (waiting to clear customs) can slow up the process of them getting where they needed. Sometimes our government agency's don't work seamlessly together. :( You would think once they were requested there wouldn't be any obstacles or delays to get where they were needed.

The blame Game has started! The underlying reason for the customs delay is 9-11 However before you call in the big guns someone has to make the call, ie local Gov't (size of the damage to be determined) Hind site is always a great factor in these type of matters.

I'm very sure at some point it will be GW's fault for the whole thing some way or the other. :soapbox:

Here's a pic taken 21 OCt at 220AM as some friends had to evacuate their home in San Marcos (N. of San Diego), you can see their entry gate lit up to get a perspective. The firemen managed to save nearly all the homes on the hill. HOO-RAH for the smoke eaters!!! :2vrolijk_21:

Spiderman and So.Cal CVO members,

I wish you all the best during this terrible ordeal. The news media is reporting that the winds are are dying down. They are also reporting that some of these fires were set.  A reward has been offered. I hope they catch, convict and sentence these perpetrators. No! Shoot the SOB's that started these fires.

I'm not into violence, but I'd like to see the badfolks beat within the last inch of their lives, left to heal themselves in the woods and then beat again.  When they are able to crawl out of the woods, beat again. What horrifically sick mind could be the cause of such devastation?   :nixweiss:

Got a bunch of PM's I'll answer here.

Yes, we were too damn close. Flying embers, ash, dust, smoke that burned the eyes, eerie glow in the sky and so forth, but by God's grace, dodged the bullet. The back yard looks like the city dump, but what the hell, I need the exercise.

Beagle is well as is his brother in law Hank and Cappy

Haven't seen anything on Brandon and Kerry. Did their home come through ok ?

Things are nowhere normal yet but city services ( trash/ mail etc) started up again.

The Poway Starbucks is still closed. What a bummer. Three straight days and nights of living hell and no sleep I can deal with, but damnit where's my morning Mocha  :D

GW isn't to blame - - - - - for the only time in his worst in history Presidency.

Arnold the Governator is AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!

BB,
Glad to hear that things are starting to look up for you.  By the sounds of it the weather conditions, wind-wise, are becoming more favorable by the day and the firefighters are starting to make some good progress.  God bless all of you out there in SoCal during this terrible firestorm, and may he keep a watchful eye on all the firefighters out there that are putting their lives on the line to protect and save others.  Keep the faith!!

Cheers :2vrolijk_21:,

I was finally able to ride the bike Wed. and Thurs. as the wind came down from the 100 mph gusts. On the 5 freeway I passed 8 Forestry fire trucks with 4-5 HERO"S in each truck. A big thumbs up to each truck as I passed them. We need a FIREFIGHTERS APPREATION DAY in this country! Very happy to learn that the San Diego family members are safe.  Dave

Spoken like a true Zonie  :D ;D :D ;D

Seriously, the fires are still going, cropping up in new places. It's hot today and the air quality is atrocious, telling me something's burning not too far away again. Started doing cleanup and it's hopeless, the air chokes you, stings your eyes and there is still soot and ash settling on the ground. One good thing that has come from this is seeing how many SoCal members we have. We need to get together somewhere once this all settles down and have a surviovor party.

Spidy and Lucky1, Good luck today and hope everything turns around for you. The Mars has delivered two payloads this morning your way and hope it makes a difference. The pic is the second one going past our house. Our fire (Santiago) looks contained and we should be out of danger for now, but you know how that goes.

The septic system dropped it's diaper, so the health dept. put a close order till fixed.  As far as I know the fix is fixed.  As my friends from the Mountain said when they went to the coast, " it's nice, but where do you pee?"

Sunday after T-Day is less than a week away, so I thought I'd bring this back to the top to see who's gonna show.

I'll be there at 11:30 + or -. I have a 5 liter mini keg on Palomar for back-up in the event of any unforeseen problem down at the lake(Hideout).

1130ish sounds good. I should be able to get Beags going by 1115 and the way he likes to ride, we'll do the 45 miles to the Hideout in 25 minutes  :)

Doc,
Pleasure to meet you and the Mrs. I'd like to ride up your way before too long, maybe we can ride up to Cook's Corner together. Take good care of that 00 SERG. It's rare to see one that is 99.9% orginal like that. Sweet ride. Think about meeting up somewhere and riding to Sedona together.

Love that shifter linkage. I guess I'll have to get in on the next group buy.  Believe it or not, I've never ridden up Mt. Palomar. Now I've got an excuse. Me and Cappy will be up as soon as you give us your address. Send me a PM. Look forward to sharing a ride. Pleasure to meet you and hang out a bit. Maybe it was a good thing is was too cool to drink beer. I might have had to see how fast your buddy's nitrous Sporty would go.

It's nice to put faces with the names. I enjoyed sitting with you guys. After we left the Hideout we went down to the desert and back through Julian. I got home about 20min. ago.

Cappy and I rode around the outback sections of the county to and from the Hideout yesterday. Not only am I amazed at the acreage that burned, but when you see the burn area and then realize that the fires were put out you get a sense of the incredible effort of the CDF and all of the help from surrounding states. There are signs everywhere thanking the firefighters, but words do not convey the gratitude of those who's homes were saved. Fire scares the bejezus out of me so I can only marvel at the courage of the men and women who voluntarily put themselves in harms way to protect others.
