The Ultimate Place to Live?
« on: November 17, 2008, 11:41:52 AM »

OK, this is like show us your ride!!  Make a case for this... I want to move to the best place to live / retire.  I want to fish, golf, and ride, ride ride.  I have the riding and golf in California but Kaly has become quite crowded and very expensive.  Thanks everyone...

There's a lot of Cali that isn't densely populated but still has great weather and riding.  Sierra foothills?

The Lowcountry of South Carolina! We have it all, only snows twice every 50 years. Lots of fishing, hunting ( longest deer season in the country ), golf ( over 100 courses ), riding all year long.
Come on down.

Oregon is out of the running if you are a fair weather rider. If you aren't willing to get wet every so often you just might miss out on the riding season here. Gortex is our friend and if you have the right gear the weather isn't much of an issue for any outdoor sport.

Crescent Beach Florida...  Far enough north you can head up to other states, far enough north that you are away from Daytona and Orlando for the most part...  Far enough south its warm most of the year, and cold is really not that cold.

Golf all over the place, fishing in abundance, and you can head to the Smokies in NC for trout (or the blue ridge for the same).

That's where I will be retiring to - and the other house in Luray or thereabouts...with about 5 acres, and I can toss cans in the front yard and shoot at them with nobody complaining, leave when the flurries start, come back when the daffodils are up.

my slice of heaven

I'ld agree with northern Arizona. The fishing is probably weak but riding and golfing are great and the scenery is tough to beat! Have a friend in Sedona and it is just lovely there. Convenient to get to Phoenix if you want city stuff and golf out the wazoo. Also close to Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. Snow skiing most winters (my brother-in-law manages the ski mountain outside of Flagstaff) and unbelieveable riding opportunities. You can still find some reasonably priced (by California standards) real estate as well.

Best places to retire: Beaufort, SC. Why I'm here I don't know, my father says I've got too many years ahead of me to think about "retiring".

Colorado, not to much hot weather in the summer, usually not to much really cold weather in the winter, unless your in the mountains. Over 300 days a year of at least partial sun, humidity usually in the 30-40% range, lots of events going on all summer and winter. I ride every month of the year, with the exception of the year before last, had a hard winter, missed December.

This is a very interesting thread.  I live in a place I really like to live from the aspect of it's a small town area.  It has very pretty scenery.  There is the Shawnee National Forrest that provides tons of good riding.  I am 2 hours from St. Louis, 5 hours from Chicago, 4 hours from Indianapolis, 3 hours to Nashville, 4 hours to Memphis.  The weather is good, very little snow and cold.  This is my home where family is so I am partial to the area.  The downsides are, this is still in Illinois, which is really the state of Chicago.  The taxes are high, gas is high, 1 of only 2 states with no right to carry, and we get NO money for anything down here.  We got no voice in the legislature due to Chicago.  But the biggest issue here is NO JOBS.  I got lucky and found a job, but had to leave and get some experience to come back and be able to make a living.  I'm in telecommunications so if something happens to my job I would have to move.  And my job is.....well.......scary.  My wife's job is a little scary too.  SO, I am contemplating a move and will be watching this thread very carefully.

Yea, I'm in telecom too, there's so many people out of work in this field, it makes it tough. We've been seeing people let go for six or seven years here. I'm the last in my office out of 12 people. If I loose my job, I'm going to do something different. I have almost everything paid off so if I work for less wouldn't be a big deal. Good luck!

Thanks Talon.  I hope to have some options soon, I am about finished with my BS in Business Management (thanks VZ for the education).  I have been in Management for 2 1/2 years now so I would think I am marketable if this job goes down.  However, I know it won't be around here.  There is just no growth at all around here in any field.

I started this thread to take advantage of all you guys living literally everywhere.  I'm already getting a lot of PM's from members from Colorado and Arizona.  A few places my wife and I are looking at.  I loved the South Dakota members comments, hilarious.  Anyway, Illinois is kind of like Southern California.  Our weather is fantastic but the traffic is the worst in the US, gas prices are high, the State tax is probably going to go up to 10%, we're 20 billion in debt, now Arnold's looking at robbing from the lottery till.  My house was 1.2 million which means my property taxes are 16k a year.  Very expensive state to live in, you can't make it if you're not well off or in my case my wife and I have both had full-time jobs are entire time of 25 years.  I'm getting ready to retire young and want to go somewhere quieter and cheaper!!  Thanks for all the input, I'm sure everyone is getting some value from it.

I'd need lots of money.

1. Spring early summer home in NorCal
2. Summah/fall home in New England
3. Winter/spring home in south Florida

Bikes/boats at each residence

Not asking for much huh?

Southern Alberta (Calgary) we have all of the mountains (Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper) to enjoy skiing and all of the winter sports. Summer great riding all over and when we feel like a change we have British Columbia, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon just a day away and then Utah ,California, Nevada and Arizona a coupe of days away.

My vote has to go the Utah. State has everything except beaches...actually it has the sand and beaches, just lacks the sea/ocean to go with it. Nevada is nice, and has TONS of public land to mess around on if you have off road bikes.

There's a lot of Cali that isn't densely populated but still has great weather and riding.  Sierra foothills?

But you forgot to tell everyone about our wonderful taxes here in Cali...  My pick is Tucson  :2vrolijk_21:

That's what it comes down too.  I love the change in seasons in western NY but if I'm earning less money at retirement I'd choose not to pay $5,000/yr property tax, 8.25% sales tax, and 7% state income tax if I could avoid it.  Oh, and NY is the only state to charge tolls along the entire 3,500 miles of Interstate 90 (or does Mass. also, that wouldn't surprise me)

$5,000.00 in property taxes is cheap. Mine were $11,000.00 last year. 13% combined sales/gst tax on everything and a 50% personal tax rate. Wanna move to Ontario?  THE MUFFMAN

I'm 55 and have a forced type of retirement due to a medical issue. I've been thinking about of where to relocate for a few years now. I live in New Hampshire where we grow rocks in just about any place you want to put a shovel into. I love riding and warm dry sunny weather, and this State offers very little of each. Those long periods of cold, wet and windy gray days just depress the heck out of me. The depression can get pretty serious at times. My wife and I have a one bedroom log home with a very large barn on 7.5 acres of which we get a tax break because 50% of the land is under water. Call it a pond or a swamp either way it's wet and my $4,450.00 tax bill just arrived, and I get to receive another one every 6 month's. Ouch! next year it will go up $500.00 each billing period. That is over $800.00 per month just for taxes. Throw in a long heating season and that is why there is an empty spot where a 09 CVO SERG should be parked.

I did go to Loveland Co. about 20 years ago to look into running a Bow Mfg. company located on the main drag. That is some beautiful country. We left here during a wicked snowstorm in late March, we got off the plane with heavy winter clothes only to be greeted by a sunny 80 degree day with people wearing tank tops and skate boarding. We looked like lost Eskimo's.  Needless to say the wife and I loved everything about it except the job. The town was super friendly and Estes park was unbelievable. Anybody want to trade? There is a magazine that I receive called "Where to Retire" and it covers all the topics one would need to start their search. I would highly recommend looking into a subscription if a person is serious about relocating. I'm sick just thinking about how beautifully it was out there, looking out the window right now it's cold, wet, windy and gray just like yesterday and the day before! Are we serious, well we called the Realtor 4 months ago and have been preparing the home to be listed in the spring. Life is just to darn short to be a talker and not a doer! Is that a word?

In the latest edition of the magazine you refer to, it says the Black Hills of South Dakota is the place to be.  When I retired at age 49, that is where I moved.  -Personally, I am extremely happy to live here. -Steve

I moved here from the opposite end of the state (Sioux Falls).  The winters THERE are terrible.  In the Black Hills the winters are far less severe.  Tuesday set a new all time record high for most of the place.  It was 79 in Rapid City.  (Mid 60's here).  I spent half of the day riding.
Generally you get at least a couple of days per month during the winter when you can ride.

OK, this is like show us your ride!!  Make a case for this... I want to move to the best place to live / retire.  I want to fish, golf, and ride, ride ride.  I have the riding and golf in California but Kaly has become quite crowded and very expensive.  Thanks everyone...

There's no better place on earth to live "year round" than Southern California. As a lifelong Mainuh, I could make a case for Maine - - - - for a few precious months. I could make a case for Hawaii so far as the weather is concerned, but come on, it IS an island. I could make a case for many of our beautiful nothern and western states, but they all get either a tremendous amount of rain or snow in the winter. At the end of the day weather wise, SoCal is unbeatable. As to crowding ?  You can't really say that if you know your way around SoCal. I'm 20 minutes outside of San Diego and if I ride 5 minutes out of my town I'm in the foothills with no traffic. And I can ride for 100's of miles like that through 7,000 ft high mountains. OR, I can hop on a freeway (which is actually fun once you get used to it) and in 20 minutes cruise the Pacific Coast Highway, checking out surfers, gorgeous bikini clad SoCal women, beautiful scenery, any kind of food I could want and cool hangouts. The SoCal custom scene is like no where else on earth and if you can't find it here, you don't need it.  So like I said, even though I'm a life long Mainuh, the truth is the truth and nothing and I mean NOTHING beats Southern California.

Middle Tennessee. Far enough away from the western portion of the state which is ruled by idiots and close enough to everything else worth doing to make it a perfect spot! Mountains, lakes, moderate weather and plenty of curves in the road to make it fun!

How the heck do you retire at 49?? I want some of that!

I agree with Spidy. Yesterday Terry and I had a great ride on a beautiful 80's SoCal day. We visited outdoor flee markets and country stores for holiday stuff and had lunch at one of our rural indian casinoes. She didn't have any trouble filling up that Bustec either.  :o  Doc

BB,

Would have to agree with you, as far as weather and topography goes.  But there sure a lot of fruits, nuts, and flakes in CA.  And the taxes..... oppressive compared to some other states.
I guess all that is a small price to pay to live in paradise ;)

As for me, way too many deep roots here in Oklahoma.  I'll just settle for coming to visit CA, CO, FL, AR, MO, TX, AZ,.....

As the starter of this thread and a So Cal resident for life, I can tell you the weather is awesome.  I'm in Ventura County and the low in November so far has been 80.  A week ago it was 92 degrees.  Today it's going to be close to 80 and I'm off to the golf course.  I'm retiring at the end of the year and like you guys, enjoy my toys and want a good quality of life.  California is VERY expensive.  My house was over a million, my property taxes are very high, the state sales tax is 8% and may go up to 10% if the terminator gets his way.  DMV and insurance are very high as well.  Don't get me wrong, SO CAL is a great place to live, especially if you don't like cold, rain, or snow.  A move for my wife and I would be purely economic.  I spoke to a guy yesterday who lives in Wilmington, North Carolina and swears by it.  He said I could get a home like mine for 500k and all the golf and fishing and riding I could handle.  The thread's been great, thanks for all the info!!

Have a friend that lives there and it is a great place to live. :bigok:

Wilmington is pretty neat - has an old town feel to parts of it, and a CostCo...

CostCo is really important, not sure why...but the wife thinks it is.

Bout an hour south of my current position.

Why Costco is important to me: by Miker.

Costco is important to me because Costco has Mount Gay rum on the cheap....
Costco also has a special Kirkland house branded vodka that is a dead ringer for Grey Goose and better yet and real nice once a year house branded single malt made by The Macallan(swoon).

Costco also sell big bags of fresh limes for which to make the rum punch with and on Saturday all sorts of seafood goodies to eat.  I get the indusrial size Milk Bones for our pooches too, saving lots of money for cigars.

Costco needs to have a humidor, ammo and Mobil One Vtwin to be perfect.

That all I have to say about that for now.

Great conversation, but So Cal??? Not many of us can retire at an early age and move there unless we have a large inheritance coming. The number of $1,000,000 homes in my neighborhood is nil.  :pumpkin:

Nor in mine any more Jamey. $200k buys a house out in the county and $400k buys in within 20 miles of the ocean.

I live in Lake Elsinore, Ca on the lake and paid 89K for it during the last recession here in 98. We put about 100K in it and now we have a great "empty nester" with low taxes. They tell me its worth 800K now but the taxes are set with the original selling price and can only be raised 2% a year. We have a no speed limit lake full of fish, the cops think drag pipes are cool, and yes we have a Costco. Hey it's not as hip as Orange County, and maybe a little more laid back but it's home.  Doc

A similar situation here Doc, ceptin for no lake, we have swamp...We have been in the house 20 years and pay 20% of what the newbies pay in taxes.

Hope to someday be able to lock it up come May and hit the road til November, when I'll run back to the warmth like a moth to a flame.

I do miss Cali though...Much better riding than the big flat down here. Gotta have both the way I see it...

East Tenn., Foothills of the Great Smokey Mtns. Plenty of lakes and streams for fishing, All kinds of back roads to ride, And best of all no State income or personel prop. taxes to pay. And cost of living is not that bad here.

At certain times of the year, I think Tennessee is absolutely gorgeous and wonderful. But it also gets soooooo humid in the summer and you get snow in the winter. Sorry to disagree but I've spent time in every state except Alaska, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Oregon and I still haven't found any place that beats Southern California - - - YEAR ROUND.

I have to agree with you Brian.  SoCal is the best, especially the San Diego area.  I spent a few years there during my tenure in the Navy, and it's always been a favorite area of mine.  The only problem is the cost to live there.  Un-freakin-real!!

B B, That sounds like where we live, why do we all think it is so expensive? Candy and I keep talking about where to live and throwing a dart at a map... obviously southern CA sounds good but I have a perception that I can't afford the zip code. Of course we joke that with the current economical situation maybe you could do well now, but when things turn around, we would be those retirees that have to move because the taxes would choke us out. Then again, it takes all types, and the landscapers and pool boys gotta live too. So there must be a middle ground, is there really a middle ground, not in a war or meth zone?  You have to remember, the closest I get to there is NBC, and it looks like a fire sale is in order! :pumpkin:

Prop 13 passed a number of years back, froze people's taxes and established taxes on new home sales at 1 1/8th % of the sale price. You pay $400k, you're taxes are $4,500. Depending on where you live, there are other factor's like Melo Roos etc, but basically property taxes are low here. I pay the same on my house that I paid living in Maine 11 years ago in a smaller house worth a lot less.

...so whatever you have to do to get the sale price way down (beg, barter, steal) will help your property taxes. My friend is buying the house nextdoor for what is owed and setting up a trust with the seller to suplement his retirement till he dies to make up the difference. Win/Win and kind of like a reverse mortgage without the interest paymant. Who would have heard of this even a few months ago. Doc

nice part about living here is there are no town or county taxes, but I bet the garbage, sewer, water, gas, electric, and cable are killers.

In the latest edition of the magazine you refer to, it says the Black Hills of South Dakota is the place to be.  When I retired at age 49, that is where I moved.  -Personally, I am extremely happy to live here. -Steve

I could use some of that retiring at 49 info too, if you don't want to share with everyone on the board you could PM me  ;D

Feels more like a traditional New England Thanksgiving with the weather a bit cool and damp doesn't it ?

Just had the dog out in the yard so she could take a wizz.  While there I brought this up with her.  On hearing you were coming back she got so excited she wizzed and dumped.  And she never dumps this time of the night.  If that's not love man than nothing is :2vrolijk_21: .

No, TN is a terrible place.  It has a very High state Income tax.  It has a Very high property tax.  The Lakes are running dry.  The mountains are wearing down.  They are making the road straight.  Cost of Living is very high.  Houses are very expensive.  It is as hot as FL in the summer and colder than MI in the winter.

Please never consider moving to TN, especially not East TN.

East Tenn., Foothills of the Great Smokey Mtns. Plenty of lakes and streams for fishing, All kinds of back roads to ride, And best of all no State income or personel prop. taxes to pay. And cost of living is not that bad here.

Nope, very bad place to live.  I hear they are closing the Dragon.  They are implementing the highest State Income tax in the country.  Cost of living is going way up.

Never consider moving to East TN

I'm with MikeR

I need to start a few subdivisions there to help the local economy.
That should draw Starbucks and Walmart.
Just hope no one gets trampled!
