In the latest edition of the magazine you refer to, it says the Black Hills of South Dakota is the place to be.  When I retired at age 49, that is where I moved.  -Personally, I am extremely happy to live here. -Steve
It's beautiful out there, but what about the winters? From what I've heard they are just as brutal as living in the NE states. :nixweiss:

Your Chair is waiting.  ;D

3447 days, and I'll be there...

But who's counting?

I moved here from the opposite end of the state (Sioux Falls).  The winters THERE are terrible.  In the Black Hills the winters are far less severe.  Tuesday set a new all time record high for most of the place.  It was 79 in Rapid City.  (Mid 60's here).  I spent half of the day riding.
Generally you get at least a couple of days per month during the winter when you can ride.

OK, this is like show us your ride!!  Make a case for this... I want to move to the best place to live / retire.  I want to fish, golf, and ride, ride ride.  I have the riding and golf in California but Kaly has become quite crowded and very expensive.  Thanks everyone...

There's no better place on earth to live "year round" than Southern California. As a lifelong Mainuh, I could make a case for Maine - - - - for a few precious months. I could make a case for Hawaii so far as the weather is concerned, but come on, it IS an island. I could make a case for many of our beautiful nothern and western states, but they all get either a tremendous amount of rain or snow in the winter. At the end of the day weather wise, SoCal is unbeatable. As to crowding ?  You can't really say that if you know your way around SoCal. I'm 20 minutes outside of San Diego and if I ride 5 minutes out of my town I'm in the foothills with no traffic. And I can ride for 100's of miles like that through 7,000 ft high mountains. OR, I can hop on a freeway (which is actually fun once you get used to it) and in 20 minutes cruise the Pacific Coast Highway, checking out surfers, gorgeous bikini clad SoCal women, beautiful scenery, any kind of food I could want and cool hangouts. The SoCal custom scene is like no where else on earth and if you can't find it here, you don't need it.  So like I said, even though I'm a life long Mainuh, the truth is the truth and nothing and I mean NOTHING beats Southern California.

Middle Tennessee. Far enough away from the western portion of the state which is ruled by idiots and close enough to everything else worth doing to make it a perfect spot! Mountains, lakes, moderate weather and plenty of curves in the road to make it fun!

How the heck do you retire at 49?? I want some of that!

I agree with Spidy. Yesterday Terry and I had a great ride on a beautiful 80's SoCal day. We visited outdoor flee markets and country stores for holiday stuff and had lunch at one of our rural indian casinoes. She didn't have any trouble filling up that Bustec either.  :o  Doc

BB,

Would have to agree with you, as far as weather and topography goes.  But there sure a lot of fruits, nuts, and flakes in CA.  And the taxes..... oppressive compared to some other states.
I guess all that is a small price to pay to live in paradise ;)

As for me, way too many deep roots here in Oklahoma.  I'll just settle for coming to visit CA, CO, FL, AR, MO, TX, AZ,.....

Great conversation, but So Cal??? Not many of us can retire at an early age and move there unless we have a large inheritance coming. The number of $1,000,000 homes in my neighborhood is nil.  :pumpkin:

As the starter of this thread and a So Cal resident for life, I can tell you the weather is awesome.  I'm in Ventura County and the low in November so far has been 80.  A week ago it was 92 degrees.  Today it's going to be close to 80 and I'm off to the golf course.  I'm retiring at the end of the year and like you guys, enjoy my toys and want a good quality of life.  California is VERY expensive.  My house was over a million, my property taxes are very high, the state sales tax is 8% and may go up to 10% if the terminator gets his way.  DMV and insurance are very high as well.  Don't get me wrong, SO CAL is a great place to live, especially if you don't like cold, rain, or snow.  A move for my wife and I would be purely economic.  I spoke to a guy yesterday who lives in Wilmington, North Carolina and swears by it.  He said I could get a home like mine for 500k and all the golf and fishing and riding I could handle.  The thread's been great, thanks for all the info!!

Wilmington is pretty neat - has an old town feel to parts of it, and a CostCo...

CostCo is really important, not sure why...but the wife thinks it is.

Bout an hour south of my current position.

Why Costco is important to me: by Miker.

Costco is important to me because Costco has Mount Gay rum on the cheap....
Costco also has a special Kirkland house branded vodka that is a dead ringer for Grey Goose and better yet and real nice once a year house branded single malt made by The Macallan(swoon).

Costco also sell big bags of fresh limes for which to make the rum punch with and on Saturday all sorts of seafood goodies to eat.  I get the indusrial size Milk Bones for our pooches too, saving lots of money for cigars.

Costco needs to have a humidor, ammo and Mobil One Vtwin to be perfect.

That all I have to say about that for now.

Nor in mine any more Jamey. $200k buys a house out in the county and $400k buys in within 20 miles of the ocean.
