Heartland Blasted by Ice
« on: January 28, 2009, 09:44:57 AM »

We've been blasted by an ice storm here in West Ky. We've been w/o power since the night before last. Trees look like the middle of a war zone. Power lines laying on the ground everywhere. The local power company stopped in my driveway yesterday and I asked what it was looking like. They say for every line they repair, 5 more break. We could be w/o power for a week or so. Clinton is on a different power system, but it's out of power too.

I was standing out in the garage yesterday, and about every 5 minutes I could hear another huge limb break off and hit the ground. I'm fortunate and managed to pull a welder/generator to the house yesterday. It will generate 240V 40 amps of electrical power. I found an old heavy 10 gauge duty extension cord and clipped it into the panel box. Disconnected from the power grid, and I can heat the house, get lights and water (we're on a well), even got this PC on, but just can't do but one thing at a time.

The last storm that left us w/o power I swore I was going to buy a rel generator that runs off propane, and wire in the disconnect so it would automatically run. I'd guess it would cost $5,000-$7,000 but, compared to loosing power in the middle of winter, it sure would be nice.

After getting the generator working yesterday, I had no gas. My truck and mower are both diesel. I tried to syphon out of other vehicles, w/o much luck. You could not buy fuel in clinton. I've got a 1,000 gallon tank a work, but, no way to get it w/o taking the generator. I finally went to another town and got 20 gallons. That will last 3-4 days.

If you drop the wad on a real generator set up you will spare your entire region any more future storms...
It worked for me, big azzed generator, no hurricanes that were bad enough to whack the power out since...Big difference tween havin to swill the beer before it gets warm here without power and freezing yer willie off without power there..Pics are nice...

I agree miker. If I buy the generator, I'll never need it. Right now my satellite is froze over and I can't even get TV. Talk about roughing it. ! ARGH...

I'll get out in a bit and check on other family members. It can really get rough on the elderly that still live out in the boonies. No water, no heat and no phones.

It was weird Chip. The roads were practically clear of ice yesterday. The only problem was falling trees and downed powerlines. We did get more ice and an inch or so of snow overnight, but it's not enough to bother traffic.

Ken .... you may want to check with Norwall.com  http://norwall.com/?gclid=CI71oa3HsZgCFRKIxwodOQlFTw

I purchased a 20kw Generac Guardian for around $4500 a couple of months ago.  They also include the auto transfer switch in most of their deals, so that knocks the price down another 300 or so.  Shipping is a bit of a pain the a$$ as they will only deliver to a location that has a fork lift and then you have to get it home.

I searched a ton of suppliers, but couldn't find anyone to compete with Norwall.

Storm impact frequency is directly proportional to the amount spent on a backup generator...

You're right on that one Miker.  The exact one that I bought was nearly double when I priced it two years ago during hurricane season down South.

That's the type of generator I'm talking about. I'm not too up on KW terminology though. How many amps would that be at 240 volts? I have 4 forklifts and my construction office is 2 miles away, so that's not a concern.

I shuld have read farther...It's 166/88 amps. That would be enough.

We just missed all the bad stuff here in SW MO. Prayers and thoughts going out to you.... Hopefully you can recover quickly. Shame what it does to the area landscape. :-\ :-\

I can probably get you a good deal on one of these! Detroit Diesel with a 230 KW generator. The only problem is it a 2 stroke diesel, many areas won't let you move them in, once moved they are usually scrap! But it's turbo, and super charged! We're pulling them out or giving them to the landlords as we close old sites.

Ice suxs!!!!! Unless you're pouring bourbon over it in a glass. :) We were supposed to have some of the same weather but got more sleet then anything. I would much rather have several feet of snow then ice, it causes much less damage.

Had seen that your area was likely hit Ken.  Sorry to see you're getting so much tree damage.  We've had the damned ice storms once or twice a year each of the last two years.  Got a little here again right now.  Enough to make roads slick again.  But not really too bad today.  And all our trees have been so "pruned" the last couple years there's not much weak stuff left to fall.  Stay safe man.  Don't worry about being good though.

Appreciate it AJ..We're doing fine though. I'm fortunate enough to have access to a generator. Cell phone is charged, but cell service comes and goes. It's more go than come. PC is running off generator right now. I was shocked to find DSL is still working.

Ken,
You shouldn't need more than a 16KW generator looking at the pictures of the house. I have a 15KW and 4000sf.
This puts out 70 amps at 240v. on propane. These units are air cooled and a good bit less than the 20KW wich are water cooled. Mine is a Generac Gardian.
Theu are not hard to install. The gas is the hard part. I used to do installs ( electricaly ) up until year and a half ago.
Let me know if I can Help.

I've been out and about checking on some elderly and helpless people. This place is a disaster zone. The local power grid is 100% down. The main transmission lines that feed this area are also down. I'm betting they will be 3-4 weeks getting most of us back on. I'll probably start seeing what I can do tomorrow about getting the office running by generator.

Ice suxs!!!!! Unless you're pouring bourbon over it in a glass. :) We were supposed to have some of the same weather but got more sleet then anything. I would much rather have several feet of snow then ice, it causes much less damage.

Ken,

That's the storm that got us here on Oklahoma on Monday.  We didn't get as much ice - only about a quarter of an inch of ice on Monday.  Then we got about four inches of sleet on that on Tuesday.  Up to 34 degrees today... main roads are mostly clear now.

We had a bad ice storm December 2007... over an inch of ice on everything.  Destroyed trees, which took down power lines.  The little town where I live was without power for eight days.  We stayed out in my shop in our RV (with 6500 watt Onan)  Only problem was that with no electricity, we had no water since we have a well.  I had to carry water to fill the fresh water tank so we could take showers.
Took about two months to clean up all the damaged trees within sight of the house.

Ice storms ain't no fun

Sounds like our storm here. It's much worse than I originally thought. I drove through a stretch yesterday about 4 miles long where the power lines were running beside the road. EVERY single pole was snapped off. We're getting by here at home by running this generator. Power has been off since Monday night. The guys that work for me will be needing cash to get by. Even if I could make payroll, the banks aren't open. Stores that are open accept cash only. I'm thinking of going off to a neighboring town and try and get a check cashed to pay my guys in cash. If I can get in touch with them. Cell service is out mostly. If I KNEW we'd be without power for a week...2 weeks, or whatever, I'd act accordingly. Who knows.

Not nearly specific enough to provide you much information but this was on the AP wire earlier this morning Ken:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – More than a million homes and businesses left in the cold without power Thursday in the wake of an icy winter storm could face a lengthy wait for electricity to come back, even as federal help was promised to two states hit hardest by the blast.

Late Wednesday, President Barack Obama signed requests from Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear and Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe for federal emergency declarations. Crews — even the National Guard in Kentucky — worked around the clock to resurrect power lines downed by thick ice in both states. Officials in states from Oklahoma to West Virginia fought to do the same.

Utility officials estimated more than 1.3 million homes and businesses across a wide swath of states were powerless early Thursday, and warned it could be mid-February before some customers had power.

The storm has been blamed for at least 23 deaths so far. Kentucky officials Thursday added two that they called weather-related: A woman who died while an ambulance on the way to her was blocked by impassable roads and a woman who fell on her basement stairs while she was retrieving a kerosene heater.

But officials said a third Kentucky death initially reported as storm related was not. Montgomery County Coroner Wallace Johnson said a man who used home oxygen died after his power went out, but that it was not related to the outage.

Many flocked to shelters, while others huddled next to wood-burning fires and portable heaters to fend off the frigid night air. Some who stayed put relied on gas stoves to cook food. Meanwhile, emergency officials feared the crisis could escalate as temperatures plunged.

"I'm so worried that we're going to have a death due to hypothermia or carbon monoxide," said John Robinson, the severe weather coordinator for the National Weather Service at North Little Rock, Ark. Space heaters, if improperly used, can generate dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

Other communities urged people to conserve water because the outages could limit supplies.

Tony Cipolla managed to keep warm by building a fire at his powerless home near Seneca Park in Louisville, cooking a pot of soup over a gas stove. But there wasn't a long-term plan for Cipolla and his two children, ages 5 and 9, if electricity wasn't soon restored.

"If it'll be a couple days, then we'll be in trouble," Cipolla told The Courier-Journal in Louisville, where temperatures dipped into the 20s overnight.

More than a half-million were without power in Kentucky, where the power outages produced by the ice storm were outdone only by the remnants of Hurricane Ike, which lashed the state with fierce winds last year, leaving about 600,000 customers without power.

"We've got lots of counties that do not have any communication, any heat, any power," Beshear, the state's governor, said Wednesday.

Tree limbs and power lines crackled like gunfire as they snapped, crashing onto now-impassable roads that hampered recovery efforts from the Southern Plains to the East Coast.

Kyle Brashears' family rode out the storm in their Mountain Home, Ark., home before fleeing to relatives after half an ice-caked oak tree fell into their home.

"It caved the roof in and ripped the gutter off, although it didn't penetrate inside," he said. "I was walking around outside until about 1 a.m. and it was just a nonstop medley of tree limbs cracking off."

Crews in Indiana had restored power to thousands of customers by early Thursday morning — but about 89,000 remained in the dark there. Power lines had buckled under three-fourths of an inch of ice. Parts of central Indiana were still digging out from more than a foot of snow.

Various charities opened shelters across the region, but with the power out nearly everywhere — including at some radio stations — it was difficult to spread the word. Some deputies went door to door and offered to drive the elderly to safety.

Since the storm began building Monday, the weather has been blamed for at least six deaths in Texas, four in Arkansas, three in Virginia, six in Missouri, two in Oklahoma, and one each in Indiana and Ohio. Some parts of New England were expected to see well over a foot of snow as the storm kept moving northeast, but because it turned to snow, ice-related power failures weren't as big of a concern.

That didn't mean a trouble-free Wednesday for commuters. Delays or cancellations were reported at airports including those serving Columbus, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. Commuters on highways encountered a slushy mess.

Tracey Ramey of Waynesville, Ohio, a village about 20 miles southeast of Dayton, said her husband left for his job as a plow operator late Monday with an overnight bag and hasn't been able to return. He did call her Wednesday morning to caution her not to go to her data-entry job.

"He said, 'There's 2 inches of ice on the road and there's no way you're going to make it to work,'" she said.

What is the story on these generators?

With a family farm we have to look at every source for equipment to keep things up and running :2vrolijk_21:

Ken,
You shouldn't need more than a 16KW generator looking at the pictures of the house.
Stay warm.
Mike

Ken my mom......Mike's sister, has the same Generac Gardian installed with a transfer switch for their farm house. After Hurricane Isabelle they had it installed :2vrolijk_21: They lost power for 21  days after that storm.

Appreciate the concern guys. I'm a country boy, and you know what they say about country boys. A country boy can survive.

It does help to not be broke. I had to go 40 miles south to get gas for the generator today. Even after finding gas I couldn't find a gas can for an additional 40 miles. I bought all 8 they had. I've got 60 gallons now, and that would run me 4-5 days. In Union City Tn, traffic was backed up at ever gas station. Most of the cars were from Kentucky.

On the way back I stopped by an electrical contractor I do business with. Their phone was ringing off the wall about generators. The Generac air cooled 20KW model with a Briggs and Straton 35 HP engine can be bought for $4,000 or so. The one I bought is more in the $9,500 line. It's a 25 KW propane fired generator with a 53 HP Ford water cooled engine. . It will output 100 amps or so. That's enough to do what I need to do. It's not the cheapest route but if the power goes out, I want this thing to run. The next best part is, they have a truck load of generators coming in from Minnesota, and will be here tomorrow. Mine was able to get shoved on the truck as we spoke. The install will take a little time, but, by monday or Tuesday, I should be hooked up. It will have an automatic switch to disconnect off public power before energizing.

It may be overkill to install this generator, but, it's worth it to me to be pretty much self sufficient here. Now, to just stock up on ammo, and I'm good to go.  ;D

I've seen Fed Ex trucks around AJ, but most businesses are closed and there's no one there to take the delivery. We got a UPS delivery yesterday. I'm still hearing we could be 4-6 weeks w/o power.

Don, that is an interesting article and pretty much sums it up. The thing that gets me is they want to act like the governor will fly in and make all our problems go away. I'm smart enough to know better. There are plenty of people who aren't. If anyone is waiting on FEMA to rescue them, they're just waiting to die. Federal assistance will help the power companies recover somne of their costs, and I'm not against that. The National Guard will help to clear roads and keep the peace, but they're not going to make sure HogBreath has heat in his house. And I welcome their assistance, I'm just saying people have got to take care of themselves. If they don't they die.  :nixweiss:

There you have it....inductive load from stuff like compressors (on the fridge) and large lecric motors or heaters starting can be a high ampacity spike, alot higher than you may think...The AC alone for our little house is dern near 60 amp at start up and then settles back to bout 20 running.

I would not fire up christmas lights at night and stuff though, no know??
Say hey to JD for us, schmoops is using alot of lectic right now, vacuuming up dog hair...

Sorry to hear of your ice troubles. We had an ice storm here in Maine a few years back and was without power for 2 weeks. The ice came on top of about a foot+ of snow, so I just dug out a hollow in the snow bank, put in my beverages, and covered it up with a slab of the ice. Worked well, kept it cold, but it didn't freeze. We are on a well also, so we brought chunks of ice in and melted it on the wood stove and used it to flush with. As for showers, we were lucky and was able to go to my mother-in-law's for a shower every other day, couldn't go any longer than that! We got use to reading and playing board games by lanterns instead of watching TV in the evenings. My son would ride his bike all over the ice covered snow, and not break through! Also, with all the trees that lost branches, or just came down completely, we gathered them for more fire wood.  When the power came back on it was a little sad, as we were having fun together as a family, but 2 weeks was enough. One of the things that I did notice was the way people came to help others out. If someone needed something or some sort of help, everyone in the village was more than willing to lend a hand. I hope that your homelife gets back to normal soon. This winter has been a rough one!

Well the banks opened up partial service today AJ. I got enough cash to pay my guys for a couple of weeks if need be...BUT.......

Damn...It's hard to turn cash down.....

If you send me the cash, I'll send you a check when the banks open. I'll just need your SSN so I can send you a 1099 next year.

Seriously, I appreciate it AJ, but I got it covered.

Hey JbBrown73. We're not far at all. Some of us will get together and do the "River Run" occassionally into Southern Illinois. We go to Paducah, Metropolis, Brookport and to Golconda. From there sometimes we'll ride on up to Old Shawneetown for a cold beverage. I'll PM you with my cell number etc.

I'm reading you guys had more snow than we did, but we got the ice. Ice sucks, unless Bourbon is poured over it.

Got any ammo?  ;D

Ken, that generator looks like an object of beuty.  You will not have to worry, sure hope the hook up goes quick and smooth.

Thanks Candy. It'll get going sooner or later. Maybe tomorrow, or maybe Sunday.

Well Ken, mines still sitting here in the crate.  I thought winter was over and sure hope I didn't miss my guess.  Been trying to call some relatives over in Paducah, but can't get thru.  Phone lines must be down up there also.  Good luck, bud.

Generator is sitting on temporay concrete blocks. The switch gear is installed and we just lack pulling the wires from the generator to the switchgear. I've got all the fittings necessary to plumb the gas line from the tank to the engine. That will happen tomorrow morning before noon. We'll test fire this baby and see what happens. Ended up getting a 27 KW generator instead of the 25 KW. This one has a four cylinder GM water cooled 3.0 L engine. I'm thinking that's like 120 amps.

Heresay is it might be 2 months getting everyone powered back up here. We're on a rural electric co-op. The number of miles of line per customer is greater here than most anywhere else. That will make make the process slow. The main transmission line on both ends of the town are down for miles. Ice has melted off the trees and if you are on a high enough elevation to look over the top of the wooded areas, it's unbelievable. Looks like EVERY single tree has been topped.

Monday I plan to install a generator at the office to get back to work. I don't know if we'll have power off the grid next week or next month.

I've been trying to check on elderly and other people who can't help themselves. In small communities like here, it's unbelievable how people pool together and take care of their own. I've had countless offers from site members offering help and I appreciate it. We're doing fine here.

This whole ordeal reminds me of the 110 engines. If it breaks, just fix it.  :nixweiss:

I'm Generating power! It's 55 degrees here today. I should run the AC!

I'd be riding if I hadn't been messing with all this. Now taking this portable generator to my son's to get him powered up.

If I could generate power a little more efficiently, I'd call the power co-op and tell them to get their frigging power lines off my property!

Power went out Tuesday morning January 27th. We got power back at my house yesterday the 4th and back on here at the office today. We're the fortunate ones, as 75% of this county is still w/o power. I think this county was the hardest hit in the whole state from what I hear.

Fema and the National Guard have taken over the grade school parking lot and set up communication towers, food tents, about a dozen sleeping trailers. Last night when I drove by there were about 40 bucket trucks parked side by side with the booms half raised as they rested in the trailers. Yesterday I counted one convoy of 50 bucket trucks roll in at one time. they had names painted on the side "Pike". I think they are from the East coast somewhere, maybe N.C. There's 100 Kentucky Utilities employees came in yesterday. I've heard estimates of 1,000-1,200 linemen working here in Clinton. That's a lot for a little town of 1,000 people.

I'll probably get boo-ed for what I'm about to say, but, I'll say it anyhow. Sending the National Guard and Fema in is the most ridiculous waste of tax payer money I've ever seen in my life. Kids are driving around in Camo Hummers and HUGE army type vehicles with absolutely nothing to do. I've seen convoys of 50-60 vehicles roll by. The N.G is supposedly here to keep the peace. Fema, I'm not really sure of. They did bring in some much needed generators for nursing homes, critical structures, and government buildings. They were about a week late in doing it in my opinion. I figure if we made do for a week, we don't need them now.

A typical story I heard from my neighbor goes like this. A FEMA employee knocks on the door of a 75 y/o widowed lady far out in the county. They told her who they were, and why they were there. They had a case of water for her, and a crate of food. She politely informed them she was doing a'ight, & that her neighbor had brought her a generator and made sure she's taken care of. Her water well was powered by the Generator, and her refrigerator was working. She had propane heat and was toasty warm. She had 1/2 a beef in the freezer, vegetables put up from the garden, and thanks very much, but take the food and water to someone who needs it. He shook his head and told her people around here are the most independant people he'd ever seen in his life. Whenever he takes a supply truck to hand out food and water at some of this country's cities, chaos breaks out, and it's almost a riot amonge the people, fighting to get the supplies.

Quite the opposite are the linemen who come in to assist. They have been working 24 hours a day in some extreme cold and damp conditions. They have a job to do, restore power, and they are gettin-her done. I've heard of some local people mad because they didn't get power restored quick enough. There's no way they can be everywhere at once. I think they've done a tremendous job.

I suppose the chaos and inefficiencies of FEMA and the N.G are typical of natural disasters like this. I suppose they did assist governments and utility companies in allowing the linemen to do their job. But it sure reminds me of how wastefully the government spends our tax dollars.

I've always believed that a person needs to be able to fend for themselves, especially in situations like this. If nothing else, my beliefs were confirmed.

Ken - I'm glad to hear you have your personal chunk of the earth well under control.   :2vrolijk_21:

Amazing how the weather can effect lives so dramatically, isn't it?  I like your story of the little ole lady being so self sufficient.  And lineman are a pretty tough lot in these circumstances - like firefighters when ground fires get out of control in the west.

Pretty soon, you all will be back to normal with stories good enough to last a lifetime.  I can here it now - 50 years from now - the old folks can tell their grandkids  "I remember back in '09, when...."  :huepfenlol2:  Got to give the old folks good ammo for stories every so often - or the grandkids will think they had it easy!!

Good luck - stay safe - and keep em under control!

Ken;

Your experience w/ the utilities is not unique. Every year there's some sort of calamity involving ice, floods, hail storms, you name it. It's more than any one utility can handle or be expected to. And every year, often many times a year, the companies just start showing up and doing what they can to help. I'm proud that our little power company responds to those emergencies just like the "big boys" and bust their collective asses to get people back in service. I think they are every bit the heroes the more publicized ones are.

Glad that progress is being made and hopefully your county can get back to normal quickly.

No but I was in highways for 30 years. Was my job to get the utilities moved out of the way of road / bridge jobs. One day they'd be working one of my jobs and the next they'd be off somewhere. I couldn't get pissed when they disappeared to clean up after mother nature.

Ken, glad you have your home-front and beginning to get the office all secured and moving forward.
Can I also commend you guys for getting so involved in your community, checking on those most susceptical if things go bump in the night.
You speak of how well set up you and your country neighbors are, my husband talks to me about this all the time.
When things go bad, if one can get to where the air and water is clean, you can survive.
Those who survived the dirty thirties know how to ensure they have preserves from gardens.

Things ARE different in the country.
In this case, the proof is that different IS a very prepared and secure thing.

Thanks for reporting back to us on KY progress.  The pictures we've seen and the reports we've heard I am sure are nothing to what you are witnessing in person.

Now, to just stock up on ammo, and I'm good to go.  ;D

Dont forget you have a home in SoFlo. ...right Jorge.  ;D
