OTIS back at DUKE
« on: November 03, 2010, 11:34:16 AM »

Ladies and Gentlemen,

OTIS just got out of Surgery at DUKE University Medical Center, and is in recovery at this writing.  While he's a tough Ol' Hombre, I'm sure he and Marlene would really appreciate everyone's Prayers.  Thanks.  Later--HUBBARD

Otis (the bike)

Don't believe everything Hubbard says.
He's having Maude overhauled cause he's tired of getting outrun.

Randy

Hope you get better soon.

Talked to Randy just yesterday and could not believe this when he told me. It was just hanging on by literally a pin. thank goodness he did not move wrong just once and destroy the whole leg.

Get well soon Randy :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks everyone for the prayers and concern.  For those of you who do not know, Randy had an ankle fusion last December where  the ankle was removed and then a plate and screws were inserted to hold his foot to the leg.  He had a checkup & xrays in April and everything was OK.  Then in May, he began having a lot of pain and swelling in the leg/ankle and went to a local doctor for xrays and was told there was no problem and the swelling might last up to a year.  Continued having pain and swelling and then when he went back to the doctor at Duke in October, found the leg was broken!  So it happened sometime between April and October and not exactly sure when.  Anyway, he came through the surgery OK and we are home now.  A rod was inserted from his heel to his knee, he has a cast and can put no weight on it for 6 to 8 weeks.  He's very weak and uncomfortable at the moment.  The big concern is blood clots since he has a history of them following surgery.  I will try to keep everyone updated on his progress.  Again, thanks so much for caring.

Update.............When Randy got up Saturday morning he was having breathing problems and pain in his chest.  I tried all day to get him to go to the emergency room and finally about 5:00PM he agreed.  They kept him in the emergency room for about 6 hours doing blood gases, breathing treatments and chest xrays.  They need to do a VQ scan of his lungs but didn't have the dye needed so have to get it from another town so that is scheduled for 7:00AM.  He didn't want to stay in the hospital but thank goodness Kenny stopped by and we got him calmed down a little and  he was admitted.  I sure didn't know what I was going to do with him at home in that condition.  He's very hard headed as many of you probably already know!  I had planned to stay the night with him but he was put in a semi-private room and they wouldn't let me.  Besides, Fred was in the house and I needed to come home and let him out.  We don't leave him out when it's this cold (24degrees).  I'm only 5 or 6 minutes away from the hospital so won't take long to get back if I'm needed.

Marlene,

I'm not a doctor, but sounds similar to something I had a few years back.  Have they checked for blood clots in the lungs?  You said he is prone to clots, he should be taking coumadin or some type of blood thinners during this revovery period.  I was coughing from any kind of activity and short of breath.  Thoughts and prayers are with you both!

Yes, that's what they are looking for.  The xrays didn't show any so that's why they wanted to do the VQ scan.  Guess it shows more detail.  I planned to be back at the hospital early this morning but Randy called and said wait till 9 or 10.  Also, that he hadn't slept at all last night and he was going to try to sleep now since they just gave him a shot of something??

Marlene,
Blood clots in the lungs don't show up in Xrays, so that's not a surprise.  The VQ (which I assume is like a CT scan) will pick them up if they are there, same thing happened with me.  Hang in there, we're all with you.

Randy's home again!  They did a CT scan and no clots in his lungs.  He was having pleuritic chest pain.  Did not have pneumonia but possible early stage of it.  Started him on antibiotics plus increased his coumadin & lovenox temporarily because the coumadin level had gotten low.  He's resting now and still very weak.  I'm sure it won't be long before he's back posting on the site.  Thanks again for all your prayers.

Randy & Marlene, I'm so sorry to read of the post-surgery complications.  My prayers are with you both through all of this.  Randy's 'hard-headedness' needs to take a vacation during this period and try and listen to those trying to help him through this mess.....I'll pray for you in this regard also, Randy.  ;) Your pal, spyder

Just a quick note to let everyone know Randy is feeling a tad better.  He's sleeping a lot and seems to breathing a little easier.  He was on the computer some today so it shouldn't be long before he replies to some of the posts.

Randy, so sorry you are still dealing with this bum leg after all this time.
That is some powerful stamina you have to deal with this pain this long.  :nervous:
Merlene, thanks for posting the status. And I do think you may need that bigger stick!  :coolblue:
Carl, thanks for alerting other.
Kenny - get better yourself and soon.
Otis, will just have to wait till Randy is feeling better to get out and clear cobwebs.
A long winter indeed.

Thinking positive thoughts for all.

Hey Randy
Good to see you posting, sorry to hear of your problems with the leg and other things. I can't quite make out your WV accent though in your post, so they must have you on some strong meds. Hope to read soon of you whoopin Hubbard's ass once Maudie gets rebuilt especially with that "stock" ole Road Glide of yours.
