Title: Photos Of FXR2's FXR3's & FXR4's
Post by: FXR2evo99 on April 25, 2008, 03:39:36 PM
Ok.....I thought it would be great to simply post some photos of the different CVO FXR's inclusive of the 2's 3's and 4's in all the available colors....just in case anyone drops in and is curious about what these bikes look like.

IF YOU WOULD FIND IT WORTHY OF YOUR TIME TO READ ABOUT SOME HISTORY OF THE FXR YOU CAN DO SO HERE BY CLICKING AND READING:
http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=25417.0;all

Personally I own a 1999 FXR2 Arresting Red   and have made a few changes to mine......I happen to have a stable of photos of these bikes and if anyone has other photos that they have in their files post em and I will copy and paste into my files.....I just like looking at these bikes on occassion......

******By the way as you read through this "thread" and notice the reflections made about people's option's, I am merely pointing out those that I can see that were not provided for as the bike was originally produced from the factory as a CVO, the taste of any change or modification is always held by the person owning the bike...... :2vrolijk_21:

Regards,

FXR2evo99

psssst.....RedFXR2 thanks for posting the 5 additional photos you did while I was putting this collage of photos together.

I really hope many will post into this "thread" so other's can see different photos of these rare and wonderful CVO FXR's.

IF anyone is looking for a laid down rear tail light (red plastic) cover I have one and would be willing to part with it, just e~mail me if interested...

1999 FXR2:   Arresting Red

Showing Non stock rear view mirrors and turn signals
a 21" HD optional "Black" Thunder Star Wheel, No Rear Belt
guard as well as non HD OEM chrome lower side pannels.
Also notice that the front brake caliper has also been
modified to chrome from how the bike originally came from
                  the factory.

1999 FXR2: Arresting Red   Total Production:  624

One of the things you will notice from photos of the "Arresting Red" is that the color can present itself differently within every photo....sometimes different hues for sure....but that has to do obviously with the digital camera being used....I would say that this photo of the tank is a very good representation of the "true" color in person....while the FXR3 colors of "Candy" Emerald Green With Flames and the Dark "Candy" Blue With Flames and finally the FXR4 color of "Candy" Tangerine actually MENTION the word "candy" in their descriptions I would MOST definitely say that the FXR2 "Arresting Red" could easily be described as being a "Candy" Cherry or apple red of sorts....another very NEAT quality of the "Arresting Red" paint is that the "Harley Davidson" graphic on the tank is a hologram and depending upon the light reaching the tank can "ghost" away per say.....sort of simply disappears....a very unique and awesome quality that HD did with this....I really haven't seen it replicated on any other HD bikes...perhaps other have....

1999 FXR2 Arresting Red

....another photo of  the "Detachable" "Convertible" FXRS-Con Saddlebags that were
"original" equipment on 1989-1993 FXRS-Convertible Bikes.  Also notice the 19" wheel......
The saddlebags are difficult to find....as they are no longer a "option" being offered directly from HD.
The saddlebags were originally priced at $350 each when offered through HD as "accessory" parts.
One can find them occassionally on Ebay and sometimes other sources have had them.  Anyway
I was fortunate enough to locate 2 brand new never before used bags for around $440.00.  The cost
associated with all of the hardware is around $180.00 when one factors in the "relocation" of the turn
signals.  All of the hardware is actually still available through HD as of this writing.  The laid down
license plate that I incorporated with the relocation of my turn signals is simply one from JP Cycles and
is manufactured by Custom Chrome.  Essentially with the "detachable" aspect my bike is ready for
TOURING or back to a look without bags in a mere 2 minutes....The saddle bags while somewhat small
still are capable of carrying tools, rain gear, water, etc.   If one were to decide to use this set up with
an FXR3 or an FXR4 it would require some "drilling" of the side pannels as one of the "pins" to fasten
the saddlebag to is secured to the frame under the "coverage" area of the plastic side pannels.  The
FXR2 does not have this issue as you will see that the side pannels on these bikes have less coverage
due to their smaller size.  If one decides not to drill their "original" side covers....one could always
purchase a second set of side covers to then drill them while not harming the original ones....I am not
saying this would be cost effective, but merely a "plausable" option.

Notice here and in the above photo the "black" tank cover instead of it being chrome....a very nice touch....might like to do this to my FXR2 as well....if anyone knows what product this is that would be great to know....would be nice to go down the highway without that "glare" from all the chrome shing up into one's eyes....LOL!!!!

Also if you click below you can actually enlarge the photo....it's been compressed to fit into the forum here, but if you do enlarge it you will be able to see the chrome solid sprocket cover easily.....

Mike...

LOL (thanks) this took awhile but hey Kodak has made billions of dollars saying there is a "1000 words in every photo" and I just thought  having something visual about our bikes in one spot would be great....and as other's post their photos we can all enjoy as well....

I love the angle of that photo (#34) and would enjoy having a better reproduction of it.....

Hi everyone....

I am going to include a link below to a "thread" I have participated in dealing with more details about the modifications I have made to my bike that I have mentioned above plus you will find a discussion about the "cartiridge" style FXDX forks which may prove to be a nice enhancement to one's FXR with additional modifications....It is indeed a "rambling" "thread" but perhaps you will get something out of it....I am not saying that I will make such a modification but perhaps a discussion about doing such is warranted???  Any input is welcome....

VERY NICE...... :orange:

So tell us how you decided you wanted an FXR3, how long it took you to find this one? Why does it only have 2K on the Odometer?  Someone obviously didn't ride it...so what was their story????

Where are you located?

How did you find this website as well....

Oddly enough i didn't even know what an FXR3 was..  I was looking high and low for a Harley (everywhere) and almost picked up a nice Sportster but decided against it (my buds said I'd regret it later if i got one, i'd want bigger)...

Wallah, on the way to way to work this bike is setting beside the road..  I got the number but didn't call right away, couple days later i called the cat and checked out the bike.. I knew as soon as i sat on it that this was it..  (Harley dealership guys said that would happen too).. I hit up the bank, got the scratch, called the cat back and he said he didn't want to sell it now  :nervous: !

Didn't do crap for a couple days, kept looking, finally called the guy back and asked to meet him.. I showed up, he reluctantly settled for a price and I'm off and runnin..  I found this site just googling the FXR3/CVO..

The mileage is a trip, the dude didn't ride it much as his wife wasn't a fan of riding.. I half though it might be an odo swap but its legit...  The problem i'm having is i bought this thing to ride (i've put 300 miles on her in the last week) and am worried about racking up too many miles...

Luckily up in hear in Oak Harbor our summers are pretty breif so she will get some decent garagea time  :-\

Ragtop, I bought a 6500 mile blue flame FXR3 in March with the intention of keeping the miles low on it, as well.  Been riding Harley baggers for almost 7 years and they say, "Once you go 'bagger' you never go back," but I just can't seem to stay off the FXR3!  By the time I get back from a 100-mile or so ride I have planned tomorrow to go see my buddy's blues band play, I'll have put about 800 miles on mine this year.  By contrast, I've only put just a tad over 700 miles on the '00 SERG this year (with 99% of that accomplished during a 3-day stint in the Smokies that included one almost 400 mile day) and maybe 50 miles on the '04 SEEG.

I'm enjoying riding this bike a lot more than I ever expected I would, so I may just have to have fun with this one and pick up another low-mileage unit down the road to collect. :nixweiss:

63SSRagtop.....

The problem i'm having is i bought this thing to ride (i've put 300 miles on her in the last week) and am worried about racking up too many miles...

Think about how you found your FXR3.....you simply found it....think about the bike you just posted the one with no miles...think about "why" you purchased a bike to begin with...."to ride".  We ALL fight what you are talking about....and since 2005 I keep an "eye" on ebay for FXR2's....and just when I think there won't be another "low" mileage bike....UP pops another one.  I HAVE finally reached this conclusion....IF I EVER want another Arresting Red FXR2 within say 4-6 months of "wanting" one I will ALWAYS find one....some one right now has a piece of "art" in their garage....keeping it perfect for me if I want it......I don't know who they are....but they are keeping it "pristine" and "perfect" for me....not wanting to put mileage on it......Like I said, we "ALL" fight that "urge" to do what you just stated.......but in a quiet moment of reflection ask yourself "why".....you purchased the bike to ride.....RIDE it so hard and enjoy IT SO much that perhaps in 7-10 years you have to rebuild it.....or get another one.....you BOUGHT it TO RIDE....don't feel guilty about it.....these bikes are one of HD's best bikes they have ever made.....you found it by happen stance....R I D E  T H E  B I K E !!!!  and when you begin feeling "guilty" about it....qualm yourself down.....and remember why you called the guy back and negotiated.....to RIDE THE BIKE......and if you wear it out....rebuild it or contact that "next" seller that is keeping their piece of art for you.... :orange:

Picked this up on ebay and haven't gotten it yet, is this a repair manual as well or just a part number reference, any ideal?

What you have purchased is the "OFFICIAL" FACTORY MANUAL...which is the service manual.....oh and it's ok to get grease and dirt on it.....lol....don't worry about keeping it pristine....you STILL need to acquire a "Part's Manual"....to go along with it...Both are invaluable and worth the money.....If you have a "20%" discount HD dealer great..if you don't you can contact "Jenni" at Tri-County Harley Davidson in Ohio # 513-874-4343.  She is an excellent source many use her for parts....she is a "no" nonsense woman that "knows" her stuff.....so if you do wish to order something from her have your "part number" ready and your visa card...lol.....in this case you can tell her....hey look I don't even have a part's book yet....lol she will get a 'kick" out of that....Over the years I have followed her from dealership to dealership to purchase my parts for three different bikes....saved "lots" of money.......YOU CAN even purchase "Drag Specialties" parts from her at a discount as long as you have the "DS" part number you are wanting.....

Thanks for sharing your "story" above......great to read!  How you found this website is quite interesting as well....
The more of us that "particpate" here in this forum with our FXR's the more interesting it will be as well as informative for all of us....that's why I created this "particular" thread...was to be a "resource" within the forum for our bikes....I, often times, in other "threads" that I participate in will send folks to this very thread.....so they can learn about the FXR2 FXR3 and FXR4 bikes....

OH and....just realize when you go walking into your "local" dealership and talk with the folks behind the counter and you tell them you have an FXR3, remember they won't have a "clue" what you are talking about....which is a "shame".....heck not even most of your buddies will know what you are talking about.....just tell them it's like owning a 356 Porshce "maybe, just "maybe" they will get it....LOL.

Keep posting your questions or other things you are curious about.....there are many here willing to help and provide some insight....and if you ever have a question feel free to e~mail me direct.....

Regards,

FXR2evo99

$14,000 and no reserve!  If the bidding stays low, someone's gonna get a sweet ride!  I chased a 20 mile one in IA before getting the one I have, but could not make it happen.  They were over $20,000 on that bike.

Thanks for the link.  I put this on my watch list just to see what happens.

Actually, that is the Parts Catalog (see top header).  This will give you exploded views of different assemblies on the bike and a full parts number listing (helpful when you need to cal Jenni ;)).

The part number on the Service Manual is 99480-99.  Call Jenni or watch eBay some more.  They show up there fairly regularly.

Oddly enough i didn't even know what an FXR3 was..  I was looking high and low for a Harley (everywhere) ...

I had a similar experience.  I was looking for a bike back in NC and went to a local indy shop to look at a Dyna they had on consignment.  Over to the side of the showroom was this red FXR2.  The shop owner gave me the complete history of the CVO and the bike (local HD dealer was clueless) and went on to tell me that he, himself still had his production model FXR.  Anyway, even though the FXR2 had more miles than the Dyna, was older and cost the same, I couldn't stay away from it.  And when I sat on it, it was sold.

The problem i'm having is i bought this thing to ride (i've put 300 miles on her in the last week) and am worried about racking up too many miles...

I used to struggle with loading to many miles on mine, but it already had too many miles to ever qualify as a museum piece.  And I struggled again about doing the mechanical mods, because then it wouldn't be stock, but doing those things have made the bike so much more fun to own and...ride (back to the first quandary).  So bottom line to me is that I'm going to enjoy the thing as much as I please.  If it ever seriously breaks, I'll fix it.  I figure the next time it will be for sale will be as part of my estate.

Good info across the board, i'm definitely going to ride her as often as I can (my official commuter vehicle now with gas the way it is  ;D )

Your right as rain about people not knowing what an FXR3 is..  I always follow after the description of its the predecessor to the dyna family, then get the Ahhh okay look...

I'm curious about forward controls, soft bags and seats, most vendors don't list and FXR3 as a fitment, i email email em and get the shoulder shrug..  Is it safe to assume that if they'd fit either a 1999 dyna or 1999 softail that they will also fit the FXR3?

The short answer to your question is "no".  Most controls, seats and saddlebags for a Softail or Dyna of the same year will not fit your FXR.  Remember, I said "most".  I know that some early Dyna exhausts will fit our FXR's.  I'm sure that there are other exceptions.

Look for stuff that fits a late a model FXLR or FXRS.  Early 1990's to end of production in 1994.  Most of that will fit.  Your seat uses the tongue and thumbscrew mount instead of the flip-up hinge found on some production FXR's.  Forward controls need to fit production FXR's.  They're out there, just a bit hard to find.  I have a pair of soft saddlebags--HD "Latigo" models that use chrome support brackets that attach to the bike.  Frankly, I'd shop for something else like T-Bags stuff or others.  The Latigo bags don't hold much and don't look too great either.

The interesting aspect about the seat....kind of funny is....the FXR2 comes with an HD badlander seat.....I wanted something better....lol what did I put on...lol yep the FXR3 "stock" seat...I really like it....in fact today I was on the bike for a couple hour run up "Poudre Canyon" (FXR2, that's the canyon that takes one over to Walden and then Steamboat  :2vrolijk_21:) So...I was just focusing on the seat today and how much I like it.....I don't run the "badlander" often at all....I fell in "love" with the FXR3 seat and my world is "great"!!!!  :orange:

Ragtop....just keep asking questions like you are doing......and all of us will help you out.....you pretty much like FXR2 stated realize that anything you put on your FXR3 needs to be "bike specific" meaning when you are looking at parts for your bike just make sure they say will fit up to a 1994 FXR....and if it fits a 1994 FXR it will fit your 1999 FXR3. I must state this however, because I do own a 2002 Road King Classic....there are some engine parts that cross over to the twin cam as well....ie: outer primary and some other things in there as well....SOOOOOOO just when I say the parts for an FXR2 are bike specific to an FXR....one must hold their horses.....lol....that's why it's great to have a part's manual as well as the Service Manual, like you will soon be acquiring......

FXR2 I was thinking of you today as I was carving the canyon.....went up around 5:30pm when all the traffic was coming down I was going up lol....the Poudre River is running fast and full right now........

Ragtop when you decide on whether down the road whether you will put a cam in or a different air filter or different pipes or different handlebars....or different etc....just ask I have a fairly extension part's list....which you can draw from to make your own decisions.....Speaking of handlebars....how do you like those "narrow" stock handlebars....which are only 28" wide.....I have a thread on page 2 that talks about a handle bar change.....cost was approximately $220.00.....

I do have a buddy that is running a specific HD bar that I could get the part number for that is only an inch less wider than what I am running and I don't think he had to change any cables so it was just the price of the HD handlebar which I believe is around $60.00.  If you look above at the photos when you see my FXR2 with his emearld green FXR3 like yours, he is running that bar in that photo.  My bike was so new at the time nothing was yet done to it and so stock handlebars were on mine as well....Believe it or not the "1" inch wider to me and the added expense was because I own a 2002 Road King Classic also....and last summer I put on a 10" high baby ape handle bar which is 36" wide....so when I found myself switching over to ride the FXR2 (at the time I had 30" 2003 Dyna Low Rider Bars) there was just way too much difference in terms of one bar to the other in terms of width....so I wanted to go as wide as possible on the FXR2 without going to a "beach bar" or ape hangers as well.....so I found a "Flanders" bar that is 32 1/4" wide, which I felt would put me the closest to the width of the road king bar....anyway it has made a noted difference....I like the "wider" bars for leverage in "twisties" / "canyons" and large sweeping curves....

Regards,

"Classic"

Allow me.  It's not an Impala.  From the "New Member Intro" page:

Yup, yup, but not sure if I'll have any time to work on the SS till I put the bike up for winter.. :) It's got a ford 9 inch, a heidts mustang II front clip, disc brakes all the way around and a 93 Fuel injected LT1 (camaro/vette motor) going together as we speak....

My apologies. I didn't know they made an SS Nova till 64. You learn something new every day on this site.

It's gotta be rare especially with the soft top

We get so many new members that I don't peruse that section of the site. My loss I guess.

Anyway, welcome to the site. Cool car   8)

Looking at the picture of the stone cold blue FXR2 with an optional seat and forward controls, Does anyone know what brand and model is this seat? I have a corbin seat seat on mine that I really hate and think this seat looks good and would be comfortable for my wife's butt as well. by the way anyone looking to buy a seat from corbin beware as I had to modify mine in order to get it to fit the bike and they were xsses when I contacted them for help. not to mention that they waited a whole year minus one day to charge my bank which almost cost me dearly. anyway if someone knows this seat or can reccomend a good seat for this bike which will make my wife's butt happy would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Bob

osseobob......

if you are referring to post # 17, that appears as a mustang seat to me....just because of the shape....however I am not certan of that...but that would be my guess....

Here is the website of Mustang click and see if you might agree:

http://www.mustangseats.com/fxr/fxr.shtml

Mustang "Vintage Seat"  Part # 75743 when you click on the above you will be able to see the seat on a bike as well....and from the angles provided it appears that this would be the seat....Mustang also has a couple of other seats which you might find comfortable for a passenger as well.

Hopefully this is helpful to you.

1999 FXR3 Dark Candy Blue With Flames

Thiis a very nice representation of an FXR3.  Notice that this owner has modified the turn signals from OEM to some after market ones for both the front and rear signals.  Also the chrome cover for the tail light is an after market piece. The lay down license plate is also after market.  The "blue" spark plug wires are after market as well.
The item attached to the chrome trim piece on the gas tank is not OEM either, it might be the owner's miniture garage door opener controller?

ps: And for you picture takers out there also notice the angle of these two photographs.....taking photos of your bike at certain angles really enhances the bike....keeping your front wheels straight also helps to give the bike the "feeling" of being in motion, which is it's natural stance going down the highway.....just some thoughts....I really like the way these photos were taken

Another photo of the same FXR3, you can see the after market front turn signals a bit easier in this photo.

And the sissy bar is gone.

Really nice looking bike.

Tim, this thing is outside of Colorado Springs.  Day trip for you.  I think you should go down there and add it to your stable.  Unless, of course, this is the  one that George is buying. ;)

Minglewood....

Thanks for posting a photo of your FXR4.  I am not sure if I personally have seen your FXR4 before.....I would enjoy reading the story of how you discovered your bike, and what the process was like for you.  Going back to 00 makes you of course the original owner....in some fashion dealing with the dealership....wonder how you found out about it and such.....anything you would like to share about your personal experience would be great and fun to read.

Very nice.  Just curious--I have no idea whay I noticed this of all things--but the V&H mounting bracket on your bike appears to be chrome.  Mine's black (from V&H).  Did you have this part chromed or maybe the previous owner?

Yeah, good eye!  One of the previous owners had it chromed.  Dog bone attached to the passenger footpeg has also been chromed.  I actually thought about using the black hardware that came with the new set of pipes so it would blend in better with the frame and not be quite so noticeable, but I polished everthing up and it looked so good I couldn't bring myself to do it! :o

Brian - agree - your bike looks great.  Wow - can't believe I fell so many pages behind in just one day.   As for my FXR4 story, including its purchase, I got the bike in 2000 with 600 miles on it (actually around 900 km).  I imported it (correctly) into the U.S. from Canada.  It has U.S. title.  I imagine I could easily retitle it in Canada if I wanted to.  As soon as I got it, off came the drag bars, for long-ride comfort.  I put on bars from the 2001 deuce (pretty sure that's right - it's been awhile).  The forward controls are Drag Specialties.  Easy on - no mods required.  The floorboards are the old style that attach just like footpegs (into the female receptor).  We modified them slightly (broke the weld and rewelded) for comfort and for more cornering clearance.  The motor is still 80 inch.  Added a Mikuni flatside 42, opened up the air and changed the cam.  The Bub stubbies have gotten a little loud for my taste, but they look good.  Couple of other eye candy goodies (braded cables, chrome controls).  Rich added the seat features.  I have all the stock parts (mid controls, pipes, etc.), with the exception of the seat, since we modified the stock seat on the bike.

Here's a pic from another angle.  Let me know if I missed anything of interest.

THANKS !!

Yes, the Corbin was a FANTASTIC addition to a FANTASTIC ride !!

I put it on in Feb. this year.

In June I took a trip .... 4755 miles .......... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO problems with the seat, I love it as much as the bike ..... and I am still impressed with the way it makes the bike look.  Took me a long time to decide just what I was gonna do about a saddle.  But I couldn't be more happy with the outcome.

Leaving on Tue. this coming week. Trip up to Mi. and around Lake Mi. and home again.  should log about 4K miles this time   ;D

So, bars, seat, sissy bar and pad, and plug wires, exhuast, are change overs...Abything else? Man, she is CLEAN...Good lookin bike :2vrolijk_21:

Thank You !

coated braided brake and throttle cables are also change overs
the bars are/were the stock part number for the 2001 Wide Glide

if you look closely you might notice that the chrome coil cover is missing - that is a single fire coil with a Compu Tech ignition system installed. The stock cover will not cover this coil and I'm in search of one that will fit.  I installed the ignition system in June this year. The rev limit is set at 6K and the max advance is 35 degrees and does not retard. It advances at about 1500 rpms and stays advanced til the rev limit is reached .... at which time the bike starts cutting out .... I like it  ;D

In the garage, waiting til this winter, I already have on hand the following items for installation.

SE Heads
Woods W6 cam
Mikuni hsr42
new lifters
chrome lifter blocks
Pro Force breather kit
Rivera tapered co molly push rods

Yup.  Sometimes I think about removing the riser and putting on mini apes (look much nicer coming from the top of the forks).  But the electrics sit at the top of those risers, so haven't done it.

Nice to see ya doing all that travelling on FXR! :2vrolijk_21:

Ah, the good ole days! Gotta tell ya, I gave up trips on street bikes in '95. Travelling's been done on RK's ever since, and now on my SERK. But this rubber-mount Evo might change that some! Never know! ::) ;D ;)

We're thinking of a CVO FXR 10 Yr Anniv. GTG in NYC next year. Keep an eye out.

Check out some of our other CVO GTG's in the Events Section too. Ya might enjoy them! Like Maggie Valley in NC next month! :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:

103tHunDer.....here you go....

I am a "Lincoln" Collector....I have a Lincoln Library of about 100 books that has taken about 12 years to put together....so when I saw your plate I thought it was really cool....SO HERE IS THE DEAL....IF SOME DAY you ever decide to rid yourself of that plate....I WOULD LOVE TO PUT IT UP IN MY GARAGE.....I AM SURE THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN but if it were...I would love to have it.....

By the way from the moment you allowed us to see your FXR3 on the trailer as you were arriving home with it, I knew you found a great bike....and thanks for posting all of your photos....we really did have very limiting photos of the Blue FXR3's....and I agree with Hoist great angles for your photos....these bikes really like the camara in certain angles....they look like they want to fly.....

Regards,

Tim

mikey....

I thought this particular photo brought out the richness of the tangerine so well I had to repost it....just to see it again....that photo captures the "essence" of the color perfectly....it's VERY STRIKING!!!!!!!!!!

So you mentioned only finding out about this "forum" last weekend, so, how did you find "us" here at the CVO forum????

Thanks for sharing photos and your story....and as Blaine mentioned would love to see a close up of those front "paddles" they look compfy.....

I want my bike to be on the Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway....thanks for posting that photo too!!!

To everyone:

You know we all talked about getting together for a 10 year anniversary of these CVO FXR bikes.......Nashville seems to be such a beautiful area of the US wouldn't it be fun to make that a meeting place potentially....giving everyone a  slight "trip" so us guys out west are just a wee bit closer....just an idea....everytime I see people post photos of the Blue Ridge Parkway I want to put my bike on there....so I am collecting folks photographs just to present that "positive" mental image....lol

I might be able to get my buddy who has the FXR3 to jump into a trip somewhere next summer for us all to meet.....anyway.....just a thought....

ANOTHER FXR3 PART NUMBER QUESTION FOR BRIAN:

I have been seeing enough photos now of all of the FXR3's which because you all had the FXR3 seat as stock were provided a slightly higher Sissy Bar "Rail" while the pad remains the same for the FXR2 I believe....so perhaps the FXR3 and the FXR4 because of the FXR4's seat also being a bit higher....perhaps you guys also have the slightly higher "Sissy Bar Rail" as the same part number....anyway....I was wondering if you wouldn't mind passing along that part number as well to me....I actually run the FXR3 seat, and would like to know the part number for that railing....When I run my rack and round duffle bag on the back then I use another slightly higher Sissy Bar Railing with a different sissy bar back rest on it....but for those typical days of riding I might like to have the slightly higher look of the FXR3 OEM SISSY BAR RAILING.....

Thanks....

Regards,

Tim

Mikey, that orange seat piping looks great along with your paint job.  Good choice. :2vrolijk_21:

About your proposed engine mods.  You're going to end up with something similar to what I did, and you're going to be amazed at the difference.  It will really transform your motor and therefore the bike in general.

THANK YOU for the nice words on my bike !
If you've seen other pictures of the Candy Tangerine you know that in photos it often (most of the time) is very washed out.  Most of my own pictures wash out, can be very frustrating when you think you have a great setting for the pic and the color just turns sorta pink... oh well

Yes, a buddy that I ride with who lives over in the Atlanta area (about 250 miles from here). He rides a RK, TOTALLY AWESOME !!!! and a buddy of his that has a SE 110 Ultra Classic .. with ALL custom paint and BLING .... well they knew that I was being challenged about how to get the rocker boxes off the back cyl. ..... the dude with the SE comes to this site and he told me that there was a group of FXR people and thought that yall might be able to hlep me ..... HE WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO RIGHT !!!

Yeah, I can understand that...... I rode it all the way north to the Skyline Drive and then took that all the way to the end !!!!!!!!!!
I camped out on the parkway and spent 3 days going up, and 3 days coming back    GIDDY UP !!!!!!!!!!!!
I am looking forward to my next opportunity to go back !!!!!!!

I don't have the FXR3 part nos.  but if it helps here are some part nos. for the fxr4
side plate left = 52797-87
side plate right = 52798-87
sissy bar = 52728-95
and you'll need/want the pad and plate mounting for the backrest - here are those part nos.
backrest kit = 52517-94

Yeah, a buddy of mine keeps telling me what a diff these mods will make !  he has done a similar build on his Evo Springer and says the results are in fact an AWAKEN of the Evo engine.....  I'm excited about getting started but am waiting until winter.  Not that we have much of a winter in SC, but a slow down in the riding season  LOL

I just have to say how great it is to see that some folks don't need a 1000lb bike with 300lbs of fiberglass bodywork and heated seats, heated grips, stereos, and whatever else to travel on a motorcycle.  Seeing your bike reminds me of my youth and my old Triumph.  Except I didn't even have a windsheild.

Mikey - seeing your travel pix reminds me of the days I took mine on tour.  Back then it was no problem doing a 500 mile day on my FXR4.  Not autopilot like my Roadglide, but lots of fun.  I agree that you don't need 750 lbs of scoot to go everywhere.  On the other hand . . . (back to the Roadglide forum).  Best two handling bikes Harley made.

Cleaning out my basement and found an old photo album...

Pic of me and my BRAND NEW FXR3.  June 19, 1999.  Taken in front of Crete Harley Davidson Crete, IL.  She had "0" mileage and is better than ever today.

Sorry to clutter the image with my Fat A$$.  If I find anymore of just the bike I'll post them.

My apologies in advance if the size of the pic comes out wrong!

FXR3 Maiden Voyage

Ride home from the dealer.  20 miles of teeth shattering, kidney bustin, hell!!!!

The dealer failed to mention that the shocks were adjustable.  They were at -"0" rings.  Not good!!

Been a joyuous experience 18k miles later.  Put my first 1k on in one month then took off for my first trip to Sturgis!  Been back 5 times and plan on going this year.  Even carried over some vacation time so I can hopefully make the Eureka Springs GTG.

Joe

Thanks for the memories, Joe.  I have a similar photo (somewhere) of me the day I brought my "2" home, although I was the second owner.  I am also immortalized on the shop wall in Raleigh, NC because the owner of the shop took pics of everyone who bought one of his consignment bikes, on their "new" rides.  Two walls of the shop are nearly covered with 8x10's of folks on their bikes.  Kind of a neat traditiion at that shop.

The Blue 3 is the rarest CVO Fxr in numbers manufactured; but the blue 2 has been the rarest on this site...It's always great to see any new member and their Fxr; but for me, seeing the Blue 2 is always a treat  :2vrolijk_21:

Some nice rides on this thread. As a former FXR afficionado, I have a great appreciation of these fine machines. At some point, I had owned every model FXR ever made including the rare 1986 FXRD Grand Touring Edition. I also built many ground up customs using the FXR frame as my starting point. As a sidebar, Chopper Guys builds hands down the best aftermarket FXR frame. And as recently as a couple years back, I restored a 1984 FXR for a friend to OEM condition ( you think it's hard to find OEM flathead parts ? try finding 84 EVO stuff ) IMHO the FXR (until the release of the 2009 frames) was the pinacle of H-D frame engineering. Strong, reasonable weight, good looks (unless you're an iron frame nut) and you could do some serious motor work without worry that the frame would tweak as a result. If you understand the FXR mentality you understand why you'll never see our brother Hoist on a full dress Geezer Glide (no disrespect intended to those who ride FD - - - hell I do  :D) Like the 100 Cars You Must Drive show that Alonzo Mourning hosts, the FXR is certainly on the list of 100 Motorcycles You Must Ride. Thanks for posting the pics everyone. Keep them coming.

Ref the questions about me and my 1987 on the previous page;
I live in Stuart, Fla and will be meeting up with my neighbors soon. (Maybe down in Jupiter at the Quarterdeck?)
My bars and gauges are the ones that came on the bike when I got her about 12 years ago. It is a FXLRC and I believe that's how they came. I contacted the factory and they said the vin comes back to a vivid black with a black stripe. My bike is actually dk green and light green with a dark green stripe. Go figure!
It has a EV3 cam, 8000rpm SE ignition, Mikuni Carb, and Vance and Hines straight shots. Dynos at 75 HP and 84 Tq.
Just put new Michelin Commanders on her and she still runs and handles sweet.

I bought my blue 2 from a local dealer in central Jersey with 2,300 miles on it in 01 or 02. I stopped in to look at new bikes when I spotted it on the floor. The fact that it was different yet still near new, sealed the deal. The ac kit and the pipes were already done. I've since added the headlight bezel, turn signals, mirrors, forward controls, spider lights, and kicked the the shocks back a little to drop the rear. With the exception of the pipes, I have all of the original parts. It runs real strong and now has a mere 4,600 miles. I will be using it more this year ;D ;D ;D

While not a HD FXR, this aftermarket FXR is quite interesting none the less! It was built by a guy I met on the HTT Forum. This was his description of it when he sent it to me. It must FLY!!! Really nice guy too! :2vrolijk_21:

Its CCI kit bike with Twin cam motor. The originals had a 110 revtech evo motor. I had to drop a frame member under the tranny to get the motor/tranny to fit.. I boxed the front part of the frame in and added a upright battery box.. Motor is a 131, SnS cases crank, SnS 640 cam, delkron plate, fueling pump, RP 131 cylinders, cast heads, lifters, rollers Smith push rods, se rockers, HSR 48,  DTT ignition, 2003 FLH tranny with close ratio 1st and second..  Fun bike to ride... Go about 5K on it.. FWIW it has a digital speedo on it but I plan to replace the display with an 2002 FXDX speedo and tack..

Not my cup of tea, either, but I look at it like this.  How many HD's appeal to folks enough, after so much time, to select for a build like this, to invest so much money and time?  Or as a subject for any of the other types of FXR customs I've seen and continue to see?  Answer:  None.

This is my FXR3.  It has an Electraglide gas tank, Mustang seat, Wide Glide handlebars, HHI dual calipers, and Race Tech cartridge emulators and springs in the front forks.  Highly recommended.  I used an FXR-SP gauge mount in black, because I have one of those shiny chrome thingies on another FXR and the reflections from the sun off it make it almost impossible to see.  Also, the reflections off the chrome gauge cups on the windshield make it almost dangerous with the sun is at just the right angle.

The engine has Branch ported SE heads, worked over CV carb, DTT ignition, and a cam I had ground that is similar to a Wood W6 but with humane ramps and .560 lift.

Don't scream "HERESY!" since it can be put back to stock, except for the engine and front end work, in an easy afternoon.

Very new to the site. Thought I'd post a pic of the bike I just found. 1999 FXR-3,  1 of 64 bikes produced that year. Thinking of putting forward controls, any sugestions to a nice inexpensive set? Thanks, Mark

Sweet rides, ladies & gents!

If I wasn't such a big boy, I'd have a Dyna in the stable, preferably an FXR. However, my wife's Heritage Classic feels like a tricycle when I climb on.

So, I'll stick with my 09 SERG and enjoy the FXR vicariously through all of you!

Nice bike Mark!  I can only suggest you spend some time perusing ebay and or craigslist.. Patience will be the key here!
Here is a link to a post on a set of legends controls i was lucky enough to come across on ebay in the box..

http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=30809.msg503551;topicseen#msg503551 (http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=30809.msg503551;topicseen#msg503551)

They do pop up here and there.. I've never seen the Kuryakyn 9168's pop up yet but have seen a set of the 9169's new in the box on ebay (extended conrols, i should've bought them!)

Any controls that fit the old FXR frames will work for you though, not any of the later dyna ones will, center to center on mounting holes is different!  Good luck!

Thanks for the compliment. You also have a nice bike as I like the green on green combination myself. As far as the forwards, if it doesn't look right, I'll just leave them off the bike. Your set looks like the master cylinder is built right on the control? Not sure if I want to bleed brakes etc either. Enjoy the summer, be safe, Mark

Thanks !

Ragtop .... are those 'stock' side covers on your bike ?  or FXR4 covers, painted black ?   They look really good on your bike, no matter !!
Title: Re: Photos Of FXR2's FXR3's & FXR4's
Post by: 63SSRagtop on March 28, 2009, 04:50:17 PM
Yeah Mark that was the biggest issue i was having, there are alot of forward controls with the right bold patterns for the FXR frames (and pricey as hell i might add) but I didn't want to mess with removing the stock master cylinder.. so i wanted a pedal setup that would just run the linkage back to the stocker.. these do that..   (to be fair though, most said that its not that big of a deal running another line to put the MC on the pedal.. I was not crazy about the lines (or circles) on the controls but then realized they match up nicely with the rest of the chrome..   i'll keep my eyes open for some forwards, if they pop up i'll send you a link..

I can say this for sure though, i love having them on the bike! So much more comfortable for my long legs (i was on the forward pegs 85% of the time even in town which is very unsafe!)

Those are stocker side covers on the bike and stocker headers as far as i can tell.. When i bought the bike it only had 2k on the odo so other than the controls it is as it rolled off the line.. I've never had it dyno'd..

Mikey, great thread on your rebuild.. i re-did my upper gaskets as you were doing most of that.. if i could have found some go fast parts in time i'd probably have done the same thing (going to keep my eyes peeled though)..

I had the same issue trying to torque the rockers down so i ended up 'hand torqued' them.. seem to be fine..  I did however buy me a 1/4 inch Snap on inch lbs torque wrench.. the head is unbelievably small so i'm sure it would fit between the rocker and the frame with no problems..

Did you have a question about forward controls?  Here's mine w/ Drag Specialties controls.  Don't let the floorboards confuse you.  Regular pegs work on this set-up too.

Those forwards are at the right/ average distance for most people or are those the extended model due to perhaps long legs? Do those forwards use the stock master cylinder or is there one as part of the control system that is hidden? Thanks, Mark

Most extended controls are usually for peeps with 33+ inch inseams... The Drag Specialties forwards use stock master cylinder, the forwards that dont are really obvious as you can see the master cylinders on the peg (except for some of the really high dollar ones that camoflauge them a little better like ness).

That cat had a few more sets, might be able to get a set at the same price as what the auction closed.. Gotta remember though bro, nobody makes the billet ones anymore that use the stock mc.. (although i haven't checked australia and other overseas dealers yet)...

I have#27 of the FXR3 1999 Lo-Riders. Saddly due to economy I must sell it. It is listed on eBay right now at a FRACTION of its value. Also since I see you are trying to locate them all #45 is also listed but is a salvaged bike~salvage title has been wrecked. It  is in Wisconsin at a dealer. Take a look at eBay an you'll see  2 right now. Of course mine is sweet & well kept with LOW miles.Great Bike!

Hi FXR2Evo99,

Hope all is well,

Hey, last time we chatted was back in 2008 when I purchased my Screaming Yellow FXR4 that I just sold a few months ago.

Definitely the Arresting Red FXR2 is the most amazing machine ever produced by the Motor Company.

Here's my fxr3.
When I bought it, it was already repainted to black with silver flames.
There is actually a thread here somewhere where some of you guys trashed it pretty good.
Seems others had spotted it on Ebay and the thread was something about is it really a fxr3 since it didn't have original paint.
I am glad I bought it. If it was all original I would have been more reluctant to set it up how it is now.
Today I am super happy with the changes I made.
For comfort I went with the Corbin Gunfighter and 8.5" pullback risers.
Painted it black, and got rid of the funky flame job.
Followed some advice here, and sent my forks to Traxxion for the AK-20 in May 2011, and still got the CVO discount.
Had them raise the front a bit, while they were in there. Got the longer Bi-Tubos (13"). With the discount the decision was easy. Night and day over stock. Found a chrome lower and bought some wilwood 4 pistons and now had dual brakes and no dive ever in that front end.
This site along with fxr section of v-twin forum has been a God send in helping me make most decisions right the 1st time.
I know a lot of you guys won't like my style over the classic looks they came with stock, but I have thought long and hard about what is important to me. Performance, safety, comfort and looks are all equally important. And the combination keeps me smiling weather I am on the bike or see it when I open the garage.
Thats my .02c or closer to $13k now. But that is why I work 6 days a week.

My pipe is a RB Racing LSR C style.
Used to run V&H Straightshots with no baffles (bought it that way)
They looked great and made good power, but were loud in an obnoxious way.
LSR pipe is throaty (deeper) and doesn't hurt your ears.
With the 45 degree turndown the noise doesn't ever seem loud.

Love the suspension mods and my father would like to do the exact same thing with the suspension.  When you "raised" the front, what specifically did Traxxion do for that and what did they call the modification?  How much did it raise your front end?  It's hard to see from the pic, but can you see the whole top of the rear tire when looking from the side?  With your set up, could you tell me how much higher the bike was raised?  Do you know if the 13 3/4" Bitubo's will work too or are the 13's perfect?  Do you ever bottom the rear end anymore?  What's your seat height at now?  Sorry for all the questions, just actually excited to see someone with the exact mods he's looking to do.  Any information you could provide would be great.  Thanks!

The whole bike is now raised about 1.5".
I am not sure how Traxxion raised the fron end, but they were able to do it.
I explained that I wanted to move away from the low rider set up. I wanted the 13" rear Bitubos.
They did their magic and it is a grat mod for people who are tired of scraping all the time.
I weigh 240 and have 2 drainage ditches I have to cross on the way home.
I have tried to bottom the bike out, and it hasn't done it yet.
The wife now thinks the seat feels better, even though what she is feeling is us not bottoming out.
I am 6' tall and think this bike is the right height for me.
It sits level and the suspension is much more useable. You can lean, go over bumps, and get around cars much easier.
Hers a better side veiw pic showing the rear tire to fender space.

New guy here. I just got my 1st Harley this past weekend and it just happens to be an FXR3. I can't believe my incredible luck. I have been riding a Shadow for a few years because with a house, wife and 3yr old, funds are tight. My father in law bought this new in '99 and now has a grampa bike. This was collecting dust in his garage, can you believe it! So finally he decided it needed to be appreciated by someone again. Well I sure as hell appreciate her. As you all know this is amazing coming from the Shadow! The only downside is there has been nothing but rain and rain/snow mix up here in the Northwest with a small couple hour exception since I got her. I can't wait for some ride-able weather! I suppose this is good however since I am waiting for the oil, filter, plugs etc. I ordered to replace the stuff that sat in the garage for a couple years. I just wanted to add my 2 cents. Thanks putting up all the great info on amazing bikes.

I hope it's OK to ask this question here, if not let me know. I see two different styles of headlights in all these pictures. Some have a rounded bezel like mine and some have a recessed or Frenched look to them. Is this just a customization or did Harley change some along the way. I can't seem to isolate the recessed light to a particular model since I saw a green 3 with it but my green 3 is different. Any ideas?

On my FXR2 and FXR3 both have the rounded lites, But my FXR4 has the frenched lite. Never paid that much attention to this before. I checked out my friends 3 bikes down the street and found that they had the same lites as mine. I can only assume that the change was for the 2000 FXR4. I could be mistaken, just writing down what I see.

Picked this up last fall.  The previous owner had made it his own.

And after a winter of scrounging a few parts and having some of the ugly repainted, now have this.

I'd like to find a set...

I got this set from a member over on the V-Twin forums.  But I'm always on the lookout for them.  Most turn out to be junk, but every once and a while I find a set of keepers.  A couple of years ago I found a set for my 84 that were taken off back in 84, boxed up and put in the guys rafters.

They were perfect.  The set on The -4 shows some wear when you look real close.
