Best Affordable Battery with Long Life?
« on: March 04, 2015, 10:42:49 PM »

It's battery replacement time. System charges 14.2 vdc when revving. Cleaned all cables and starter solenoid. Removed battery and took it to Autozone  to load test. They said is was weak. I really don't want to spend 350 to 400 Bucks for a Lithium Ion battery. Who makes a good battery. I have heard the
Harley batteries are not so good anymore.

I bought a Chrome Battery for $89 to my door. Main reason I did was I thought it was made in Indiana. Another member showed me otherwise, but it has been in over 3 years w/ no prob.

I have a 2012 cvo with 17k miles and the original battery. How much longer can I expect to get out of the original battery?

Whoops...sorry for hijacking your post Itank. Thought it would be a good place to do so though.
Also I may have accidentally hit the "Report to Moderator" button...if so sorry again.

In some ways the wrong question.  Instead consider "how soon should I replace it without worrying about having to push that almost 1/2 ton pig home or up on a trailer."  I change mine every four years whether they've given a problem or not.  AGM batteries rarely give much tell-tale signal of an impending failure.  So you generally won't know.  So I change it on a schedule that feels safe.  If before that fourth year is up I start even sniffing a battery weakness I'll change it then too.

Thanks Twolanerider,
Sounds like good advice. I will keep an eye on it this conning year and look to replace it next.

Went through this a few months back. 4 year old original battery in a 2011.  Always thought I would go Dekka when replacing but friend of mine did that about 18 months ago and it just recently died.  Back in November I started feeling like my Ultra was not cranking as quickly as original.  It had never gone dead or failed to crank.  Had a 15% off discount at local dealer so just bit the bullet and put an HD back in it.  Guess 4 years sounds about right although I've heard folks go 5 to 6 years.

Yuasa makes a good battery IME, as is the OE, but man have they got out of hand price wise.

I still buy the Harley batteries, however tend to have to agree with Two lane to replace on a schedule before you are stranded.  Mine died at a gas stop in PA while we were on way to Chappy'sfuneral last year.  Lucky for me we were within ten minutes of a dealer and  GH took my old one and picked up a new one for me.  By the way it was my original battery and yes I waited to long.  Always keep n battery tender when not in use.

X3.

Keep it on a Battery Tender when not riding.  Usual life is about 4 years, like 2Lane said - when it goes weak, time to replace.

I had the Big Crank from www.Batterymart.com in my old bike. It's really a re-branded Deka AGM battery. About $85 delivered in a couple days. Had it in there three years when I traded the bike.

You may want to bite the bullet and get one before it goes south.  Speaking from experience it will let you down when you least expect it.

My FOB battery needs a new battery every 2 years.

My 2012 OEM battery lasted less than 3 years. My buddies '13 only two. Our seasonal riding with prolonged storage and cold temps likely had an effect on the short life span.

Had an HD dealer state a battery tender was a must to get any life out of a battery here. With all of the electronics on our modern bikes that drain Even when not running such as an alarm or radio, if you don't ride it often AND year round, the battery will be toast in no time.

Have a battery tender now so we'll see how much longer I get on the new one.

Your '14 battery is starting to die?? That is very strange. Isn't it still under warranty? And $385 for a battery that will do nothing a $100 battery will do... Not me. I use the twolane approach, and I still buy them from dealer, just only when 20% off sales are going on. By buying ahead you can time it a little to your advantage.

I just put in a Antigravity Lithium ion battery in my bike with 720 crank amps and I am thrilled with it! Bike cranks crazy fast and starts immediately under all conditions. No doubt it was expensive but to me it was well worth it. Love it every time I start my bike.

A buddy of mine just replaced his original 2006 HD battery with another HD battery--it was still starting just fine but he got concerned before a long trip since it was so old. I've been getting 6-7 years on the Harley batteries, think I'll stay with HD.

I'm a big fan of Lithium ion batteries for my drill and chain saw, etc.  In my (climate),  it would also be a good choice for my Harley.............but not so much if one lives in a cold climate.

Issue #323 (May Issue) of American Iron Magazine has an extensive long article regarding motorcycle batteries of all types.

Really more info than most of us would really want to know............and a lot of coverage of all the (pros/cons) regarding using Lithium Ion batteries too.   Check it out for all the details. :drink:

I think the title of the thread said Best Affordable Battery.  Lithium ion batteries may have some pro's (and they also have con's), but I haven't found any that I'd call "affordable" when compared to lead acid.  I think I'll leave the LI batteries to the things they really are superior for, like cordless tools, phones, etc.

If you're only putting out 14.2 volts on the Gage your not charging enough your battery stores the voltage your alternator produces

Actually no, 14.2v is precisely what the gauge should be reading (assuming the gauge is accurate) with the charging system working normally.
