Just ordered the Michelin Commander II
« on: January 11, 2015, 08:34:31 AM »

I was trying to hold out till I got my Ohlins from Howard, (they are back ordered), and have everything done at the same time. But the tire can't wait. Yesterday riding in the rain  to meet up with JC, the bike got squirrelly. I lost confidence in the turns, especially over painted lines, steel plates, and man hole covers.

This will be my first Michelin. I've run the Dunlop D402s, E3s, Metzler ME880s, Avon Cobras, and  Shinko777s. Hoping for some of that longer life and higher mileage that some have experienced with the Commander II.

Bought it from RevZilla as they had the best price.

Who here has them?
How long have you had them?
How many miles did you get out of them?
What do you like/dislike about them?

Thanks!

I had them on my hot rod Roadglide. My experience with them
.There is a release compound from the factory that may make them a little slippery that needs to wear off, so go easy for a hundred miles.
.Very smooth and quiet on the Interstates.
.If you live and ride in a area without a lot of twisties and hills (braking hard) mileage should be better than other brands. Driving habits of course affect ones mileage.
.Wet grip is just a little better than the D402, but not as good as the Avon.
I live in the Smokey Mountains and got 13,000 miles (no hole shots) out of the rear, my long time riding friend who lives in Florida got 18,000 miles out of his rear tire. YMMV.
Hope this helped.

I'd love to get 13k out of it. And 18k seems too good to be true. I'm sure slow n go traffic and the crappy roads here in LA have a lot to do with mileage.

I'm on my second rear Commander II tire.   I like the tire a lot, but I had some inconsistent results with them.    I did not get the expected mileage out of the first rear tire  ...~7k over a three week period, two-up, before I noticed that there was excessive tread wear and some unexpected cracking in the middle of the tire in the groves on the rear tire.  Front tire is fine.   Michelin first told me there was no warranty on the tire because I purchased them on amazon.   The dealer I bought them from gave me a full refund for the tire when they saw the photos ....   later after Michelin saw the photos I received email from them wanting to recant on the no warranty and offering help and wanting the tire back.

I am now on the second Michelin commander II rear and have ~5k on it ... no cracks ..   hoping to see the good tread life promised.

I'm chocking up the first bad result to bad compound mix during manufacturing.  So much for discount tires  ;D

I'm attaching a photo of one of the cracks.   there were half a dozen of these around the tire, all within the 3 inch contact strip.

As I said,  love the handling of the tire ...   not bad mouthing the tire unless it happens again ...   just an FYI for others to keep an eye out for the issue.

Dave, check the air pressure every week or 2. IIRC I ran 42 psi in the rear, 40 psi in the front.

Thanks for the tip ...  I usually run a little lower than 42lbs .. 38-39 for ride comfort ...  I will give your suggestion a try..

I've been running 45 psi on front and rear with not that great of results. Ziggy just seems to feel better with the higher psi.

I never could get a straight answer from Michelin about what psi to use. I have read the sidewall, but they just always felt a little loose in the turns with the max pressures. So I bumped them up a little  :nixweiss:

I just put on a brand new set, so we will see how well they wear.  :)

Still no 130/60B19 front wheel fitment for the FLHXSE3?  :'(

I really don't want to buy another set of Dunlops for Honey Badger in the spring, but it appears that I still have no choice...

The old Shinko was so worn and squared off,  it was like riding on a car tire.

I have a brand new set in the garage. I'm trying to get all the use out of the stock dunlops. But the sides of the rear are dipping out so bad I may go ahead and change before daytona trip.....

Avon doesn't make a 130/19 front either, Avon rep said none in the works. Think we're stuck with Dunlop.
