worth selling? '03 SE Deuce with 5 miles...
« on: January 15, 2009, 02:36:21 AM »

Hi guys.  My dad bought me this bike when it was new so I could ride with him and my brother, but I ended up riding my brothers XB9R, then just never rode it.  I know it sounds dumb.  It's been in a air-conditioned garage at my parents' house since new.

Is it even worth it to sell it at this point?  I know we paid like $32K or so.  Or should I just bust it out and start riding it?

Start riding it...simple decision. Put it for sale and you will likely sell it for much less than you expect.

That depends.... In todays dollars it is worth between 16k and 22k ( I think)

So if you need or want to sell it for that just put it on ebay and good luck

I have to admit, essentially zero miles will absolutely present a premium for anyone that has some sort of an attachment to the particular model, but the fact is, the Screamin' Eagle Deuce is probably one of the least desirable CVO's they came out with. We all took a bath and most of them are going for only a few extra dollars over a bone stock standard Deuce.

Imho, you might stumble on someone who might give you $20K, and if you do, I'd take it and run. Most low mile '03 and '04's are actually selling for much lower than that.

Here's a couple of examples:

A '04 w/ 3,500 miles that only bid as high as $10,000 and never made reserve:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140291556903

Same bike relisted again and only got to $12,766 and never made reserve:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140293567752

Here's a '03 with 4,833 miles that only bid as high as $10,300

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110332211745

While you see plenty of listings in the $16K to $18K and above range that end without a bite, the reality is, I watch this pretty closely (to cry in my beer no doubt) but now most '03's go for under $14 to $16 max. '04's can pull a little more, but that's about it. Last year, the '04's mostly went around $16K to $18K.

The fact is, the economy has had an impact, but more so, the demise of the Deuce and the new CVO's have bigger engines and are all around nicer. The SED is pretty much the unwanted step-child of the CVO family.

I will say, you have a great Dad to have done something so nice. Why didn't you ever ride it? Dude, I would ride it and enjoy it!

I agree but there are people that are still in love with that bike. I sold mine last year after listing it on ebay three times. After getting no interest at all the first two times, the third was the charm. I had two people that wanted and would not consider any other bike, which brought me a fair price.
Anyway point is there are loyal 03 SED fans out there and with only 5 miles, it certainly would move that bike to the top of the list and market.
I still miss that bike though, if you take yours for a spin, you will probably decide to keep it. :2vrolijk_21:

Not to everyone!  I still love my baby!  It was my first CVO, and while I really like them all...my 2004 SEEG is gone...so is my 2006 CUSE....the SED is still here in the garage.

Haha - I guess that leave me and you brother!  I just saw a '03 wil low miles sell for $13K. Breaks my heart, but I think the fact is, just based on the volume of post in this SED forum, not many share our enthusiasm.

Had the same bike and still think it was the best looking of that family of bikes. That said, I turned around and sold it in 2005 for $18,000, so I could buy a 2005 SEEG. Also sold a 2003 SE Road King at the same time. The SE Road King retained way more of its' value at that time. Everyone has their opinion and mine is that unless you are incredibly lucky, you will be very lucky to recoup $12-14,000 for that bike now. If the bike sat without being prepped for long term storage, there may also be problems from sitting so long. Remember, most motorcycles are not investments. They are just depreciating assets just like most motor vehicles unless you have something like a car where there are only 10-20 copies ever made. Good luck.

I purchased the 03 for a couple of reasons...its the best looking of all the harleys (my opinion) and the fact it is the 100th, and a CVO to boot.  The value wont really be there for a lota years, but as they get wrecked, stole and choped they will be worth a good dollar.  Best example; In 82 I bought a 'Cuda R/T for $2500.00  It was a 72, and only 10 years old and certainly not really rare.  Take a look at them now, and because the supply has been depleted they are worth a small fortune.  Will the 03 duece ever get there?? Maybe, but it just doesnt matter to me.

A 'Cuda R/T??  A Challenger R/T or a 'Cuda...they never made a 'Cuda R/T

its a cool bike, better start riding it before the sitting around time starts to harden seals and stick rings to pistons and such, sitting around is worse than high mileage. I'm in agreement on the value of the bike, not because they're ugly or the step child cvo, but because its old. nobody likes old any more. everybody thought the 100th anniversary bikes would be gold, but unless your bike is painted gold, its not!!ride it enjoy it reflect on the fact that you father loves you enough to buy you that bike, and be the only guy in america with 100 miles on his 03 deuce!
