On my way back to Texas from Sacramento
« on: September 05, 2008, 01:48:02 AM »

I am sitting here in a Motel just south of Salt Lake City planning my route to Dallas, Texas. Having left the Northwest USA last Saturday after a fantastic time with RJ749 (Roger and Cindy in Washington) and Rooster (Terry and Karen in Salem). If you get up their way definitely say hello to them. Thanks again for being great hosts.

For those that don't know, my bike ate a lifter after I left Roger's place August 21, the Yakima HD shop replaced the SE255 cams, all 4 lifters, and the oil pump. Thy removed the oil pan and cleaned the cam areaand oil pan of any metal, put it all back together and sent me on my way, they did all the work in one afternoon.

Well I made it all the way to the Rooster's place outside Salem OR, passing by Mt Rainier and Mt St Helen along the way. I even went for a ride along the Oregon coast with the Roosters Saturday the 23rd, as I pulled into the Rooster's yard at th end of the ride the oil pressure light came on. Called HOG and they picked up the bike Monday August 25th and took it to the Salem HD shop. They found the oil pump gear cracked and jammed into the pump case. After a more through examination they called MOCO and I got a new motor at 24,595 miles. Yes I have seen a bit of this great country of our this year.

Got the bike back August 29th and did some riding around Salem Friday and on Saturday the Roosters and I met with Don and Soozie at the Salem HD shop to watch Don pick up his new Baby.

I left for Sacramento that afternoon to visit a buddy.

Anyway, so I left Sacramento Wednesday Sept 3 and passed by Lake Tahoe and then got hung up in Reno getting tires for the bike, unbelievably I got 16K out of the front and back tires, the front was an E3 and Reno had another so I could not pass up not getting mine replaced, it was starting to cup anyway. The back was getting real close to the wear mark.

I'm going to be traveling through Colorado tomorrow and this weekend, taking either US40 or US6 andthen I70, someone told me US40 is nice but others said even though it is an interstate going through Vail is great. Any suggestions?

Also, anyone live out that way riding towards Denver/Colorado Springs?

The new motor is running great, seems a lot smoother then the old one but I can't remember what the old one was like with only 1500 miles on it. So with almost 26,000 miles on the bike, yes all since Mar. 26, 2008, I have a new motor and new tires so the bike feels like new. Funny how bad things like broken lifters 2,000 miles away from home turn into happy endings.

The picture is looking from US50 at Lake Tahoe in the distance.

Here is the place for all the big motors.

Ironic.  I literally just finished reading a news piece about rider killed today on The Flats.  Article reported the rider being timed at 239 mph at the time of the crash.  On a 500cc two stroke.  Had to have been a hell of a ride.

You could see some vehicles out where they race but from the rest area I could not see or hear and runs being done. I was also running late and needed to get through Salt Lake before the sun set so I didn't stay in the area more then about 20 minutes.

I-70 is ok until after you get past Vail going east, but after that it can be a nasty road, lots of traffic and people drifting out of their lanes in the twisties. May not be as bad now that many of the tourist have gone home be safe. If I knew you were in the area we could have met up some where off 70.

Thanks Talon, right after Vail I was looking to drop down on CO 9 at Frisco going south.

Sorry for the late notice.
