Quick run to Memphis
« on: June 06, 2006, 10:06:07 PM »

Just returned a few hours ago from a quick trip to Memphis, TN where I met up with 04hd103 (Tommy) and his wife (Judy), JR (John) and his wife (Debbie), and MJZ (Mark).  Tommy and his wife took off Saturday morning for a week's vacation riding through Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and eventually back to their home in Augusta, GA.  I decided to hook up with them for a day while they were in Memphis and we were also able to meet JR and MJZ while we were there.

Sunday evening when we got there, JR's wife, Debbie fixed a great fish and chicken dinner for us and then Monday, JR gave us a really nice tour of the Memphis area including downtown Memphis, Graceland, and some of the surrounding communities.  It's always a real treat to meet people from the site and this was no exception!  Thanks, John and Debbie for everything you did for us the past couple days.  Mark, it was a real pleasure to meet you and get to do some riding yesterday - - glad both of you guys could take time away from work to hang with us for awhile and show us around.  I had a GREAT TIME and I know Tommy and Judy did, too.

Here are some photos I took during the last few days . . .

First one is right after John and I arrived at the hotel where I stayed in downtown Memphis.  John was nice enough to meet me about 200 miles north in Cape Girardeau, MO and ride the rest of the way in with me!

On the way out to John's house for dinner on Sunday night, we hit a pretty hard shower that was passing through the area.  We tried to ride out of it, but it got harder before it stopped.  At a stop sign back in Memphis before we hit 240 to get out to John's, Tommy rolled up along side of me and said, "You'd think we were in Maggie Valley!!!" ;D

Around noon, we met up with MJZ at Bumpus H-D.  That's him and John talking there.

We hung around for the service manager to get back from lunch and talked to him a little about the Zipper's cams that they did on John's bike.  We were trying to get a little group buy action going! [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]  While were there, a guy by the name of Marvin pulled up with he teal SEEG and dropped the bike off for service.  We talked to him for awhile and gave him one of the cards I had in my tour-pak for just such an occasion.  Hope to see you on the site, Marvin!

Then we went to Mark's house for lunch and a quick swim in his pool.    :D Just kidding!  This was a house that John wanted to show us in one of the more affluent neighborhoods.  It had won some architechtural awards.  This place was fabulous!!!

That evening, we went to a restaurant about a block from where we were staying called Texas de Brazil.  Wow, was that good, or what?!?!  Texas de Brazil is a Brazilian steakhouse and the chefs bring you about 7 or 8 different kinds of meat on the skewers that they cook them on and give you a piece, or slice a piece off for you, depending on the cut.  It's all you can eat, so if you leave there hungry, it's your own fault.  We did not!!! ;)

After dinner, we checked out the nightlife on Beale street, just a couple blocks over from where we ate dinner.  If you like the blues, this is the place to be!  It was incredible!  Blues bands playing in virtually every bar on the street, just take your pick!

Awesome pictures, and great ride report. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] Every time I read one of these reports, and see the pictures it just gives me another place that I have to go see. The sounds, smells, and people you meet along the way, and when you got to your destination are priceless.

Thanks Brian.....for the report and the photos.  We (Andy, Jon, Jock and I) plan on stopping in Memphis and seeing a few of those sites ourselves, in about a week or so.

I spent time in Memphis in my teens (Marine Corps Aviation School) and remember some of those sites.........and of course the ducks at the Peabody Hotel.  The damn ducks march to the fountain in the lobby....it's all by the blow of a whistle.

Thanks for the comments, guys!  Glad you enjoyed the ride report and pictures!

Yes, we did see the ducks march into the elevator at the Peabody Sunday night but I didn't get close enough for photos.  Tommy and his wife stayed there and when I called them to see what time they wanted to head out to John's to meet his family and have dinner, in the background I heard Tommy's wife say, "We have to see the ducks!!!" :D  So, we watched the ducks, had a drink at the bar in the lobby, and then hopped on the bikes and got soaked [smiley=nervous.gif] on the way to JR's.

Monday morning after we had brekfast at the Denny's across the street from the Peabody, Tommy and Judy went to go get their bike.  When they got to the lobby, they saw Oprah Winfrey checking out of her room.  Wouldn't you know it, they did not have their camera with them at the time.  Bummer!!

Spyder, I think Tommy stopped in Tunica on the way.  When he gets home and sees this thread,  I'm sure he'll tell you how he did.

Brian, great report, I'll give you an A+. It was a pleasure hooking up with y'all down here in Memphis, just wished I'd been able to make Texas De B. As it turned out, my son's plane was 90 minutes late and I ended up sitting in the airport from 7:00 until 9:15. (Thank's Delta).
Anywho, it was a pleasure meeting and riding with all y'all.
Oh, p.s., I'll be watching e-bay for that medalion.[smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Thanks, might give it a try tonight, right after I clean it up and take a look at the exhaust leak I developed on the ride home.  Think my wife would believe me if I told her I needed to get Rineharts in order to fix it? [smiley=nixweiss.gif] [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Just work on the leak w/the wrong tool, and mess it up beyond repair. Then with your most innocent looking face say the following.....

"Honey, Come here let me show you something. Can you believe as long as I've had these pipes, and as many miles that I've put on them they finally gave out on me? You know we are getting ready to go to Cripple Creek, and I understand they really enforce the noise ordinance there and I really think to be on the safe side I should have these replaced before we go."

Now remember to keep a straight face, and don't act to excited when she says "Well if you really think so go ahead I'd hate for you to get a ticket."

Or just say to her, " Honey, don't you love the new sound of my bike? I realize it is kind of dangerous breathing in this exhaust but it really sounds great. I hate to replace them but I guess I better do it for you and the kids before I take off on another trip." [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Gosh Brian that was cool to relive this weekend looking at them great pictures. Tommy left out this morning and looked like he was in for a great day to ride. We didn't hook up Tues night as I was late getting in from work and was pooped! Not use to partying all night and working all day anymore. Great to see you enjoyed yourself and greater to finally meet you, Tommy and Judy!

See Ya and God Bless!

That's one smooth talker...Sounds like a man speaking with experience.

I am lookin' forward to the Memphis Experience, I has been too many years since one.

Judy and I got home yesterday afternoon.  When we left Memphis we took back roads to Nashville and spent two nights there.  To our surprise the CMA Fan Fair Music Festival was going on.  We had a great time downtown at all the clubs.  The first morning we rode the bike downtown, but, around noon (and after two Bloody Marys) I thought it would be best if I took the bike back to the hotel and return in a cab!  Smart move!  The next day we stuck with the cab!

After Nashville we rode east on I-40 and Spent Friday night in Maggie Valley.  Didn't stay at Jonathan Creek Inn.  We always try to stay with an old friend who has a motel there.  MV was great as usual (can't wait to go back in October!).  There are a couple of new businesses in town, two new restuarantes, a new bar, a new leather shop and a shop that rents Harleys.  Alfs (the restuarant next to JCI) has changed names.  Also, The bar in Salty Dogs is under new ownership and now has "live music".  The music was OK, but nothing like we heard in Nashville!

Oh, Brian.  Why is it that every time I meet up with you, and at least one other CVO bike, 100+ MPH rides just kind of happen????   [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
I did learn a valuable lesson this time.  Don't ride at those speeds with your glasses in your shirt pocket!  They WILL bounce out when you hit a LARGE dip going that fast!  Oh well, I needed new glasses anyway!

Debbie, John and Mark.  Thanks again for your hospitality and showing us around Memphis!  We had a great time!  Brian, it was great riding with you again!  Looking forward to seeing you guys in October!

I have a few pics that I'll post later.

Glad to see Y'all made it home safe. Sure did enjoy the time we had together! [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] Today we went to for a 400 mile scoot and passed by were you lost your lens. Didn't see any thing shinny so We didn't stop. ;D It was a 97 degree day today and my Lil Debbie was whooped so we came on in.

It was awesome being able to here them Rhineharts and Fatcats open up! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] Look forward to seeing Y'all again in Maggie Valley. See Ya! God Bless!

Well guys, after seeing the great time you had I'm really bummed out that I could not join you.  I had Riders Edge (MSF beginner rider class) at Bumpus that weekend and then I was slammed at work getting ready to head out to Americade & Laconia on the 7th.  Maybe next time you or other CVOers come to our fair city I won't be so tied up and can join you.  Anyway glad you made it and enjoyed your trip.

Quick run to Memphis (Part 2)
« Reply #57 on: September 24, 2006, 03:25:49 PM »

Just got back home from dropping my bike off at Bumpus' in Memphis for the 575 gear drive cam conversion.  Guess what?  It was raining again!  JR's bike was there getting a 15,000 mile service done, so we loaded it in the trailer for the trip home.

It looks so good in there, I think I shoulda said, "Hey, JR, look over there!" ;) and high-tailed it back home while I had the chance!!!  :D

Well, got a call from Service Manager from Bumpus this afternoon about Brian's bike. I decided to post over here as this is where Brian started his Zipper cam install at Bumpus here in Memphis. In doing the cams, Bumpus mechanic (Brian Rose) found the rear head was porous. Thus a section of pics and what happened was entered in the "Ever hear of Porosity" Thread. If your interested you can go here http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1159240806/30#30.

Anyway, after the drama of finding the head problem and having to fly it in, then finding out yesterday it didn't make the cutoff time for overnight, and wouldn't be in until today! Whew, I was getting nervous!!! [smiley=nervous.gif] Well, today the service manager calls up and I'm thinking....What Now? ;D He just wanted to let me know Brian's bike was on dyno and should finish up tonight or early morning and will deliver it to my house when done. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] I got a call from Brian (103) and he said Bumpus called him and left a voice mail, I went over what they told me. I told Brian that I wouldn't be able to get by there tonight as I was working and still got allot to get ready for MV trip (Leaving Saturday).

Well, it just so happened that I needed more parts for the dozer Iwas working on and won't be in till morning! [smiley=nixweiss.gif] So guess what Brian, I got you some more pics! [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] I got there and could hear them Rhineharts just a howling inside that dyno room!!!! Awesome Bro, I get sooo excited! Service manager was there and we worked out the details on getting it home, then he said "I know, lets get you some pictures"! ;D Guess you can say he knows me pretty good by now. Mechanic (Brian) was working his butt off to get the race tuner and rhineharts to out produce my thundermax and D&Ds. He said he would overlay Brian's run and Mine when finished if his printer cooperates with him. Well, here ya go Buddy, I know your excited to get on your scooter! See Ya, God Bless!

Gee D00d, of all those gorgeous SE Road Glide color schemes (and they are all great) I simply would have never guessed your interest would be the orange and black one  ::) .

Brian,
I can't tell are you excited yet? [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] I'd be interested in how close the map I gave you was for your bike, and the numbers you get out of yours. Keep us informed.

I'm real curious about that, too, Gary.  Hey, you're more than welcome to try my map if somehow I get better numbers, but I got a feeling we're going to end up pretty close to the same.

Appreciate that, but I don't have a laptop w/the program loaded to install the map myself. I may still get a copy just to have on file in case someday I do get the above. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] Thanks.

BTW, it's very surreal seeing photos of your bike that is 470 miles away from you. [smiley=nervous.gif]

I owe JR a tremendous debt for babysitting my scooter for me during this time.  He's done a heckuva job! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Surreal.  Yeah, that's the feeling.  Or is that the feeling when the surprises we really haven't shared from the current and upcoming little engine projects actually see the light of day  ::) ?

Jerry he's waiting on me!!! ::) I just scanned the three dyno runs. The 1st run was 103's final run. 2nd one is comparing his Zipper cams w Rhineharts and race tuner to my Thundermax ECM and D&D Fatcats 2 into 1 exhaustand the 3rd is his before and after. I'm going to post some pics of his bike I took outside then the dyno runs, THEN I'M TAKING ME A SCOOT!  ;D Gotta say, them rhineharts sound awesome when I pulled into my garage. Well here ya go.

That's nice Brian. Congrats on what looks to be a job well done.  Your numbers are considerably better than mine after the first tuning attempt and still a bit better after the second time they finished dialing it in.  You're gonna love it!

Congrats again.  Now enjoy the ride.

JR, thanks man for sharing Brian's accomplishments with everyone.  It sounds like you're having almost as much fun helping as he is receiving on this deal.  It's been a good one to watch.

See you both real soon.

Thanks, guys! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  I about fell over when John told me the numbers over the phone!  "116 point how many ft./lbs. of torque???" [smiley=shocked2.gif] [smiley=shocked2.gif] [smiley=shocked2.gif]  Yeah, baby!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many thanks to Brian Rose and the staff at Bumpus Harley-Davidson in Memphis!  They were outstanding in their communication with me and with John throughout the past couple of weeks.  Brian also found a number of things wrong with the bike that I had no idea existed, including a porous rear cylinder head, improperly torqued compensator nut, and a broken bracket inside the fairing.  I think it is this kind of attention to detail that each of us expects at our dealer, but seemingly is getting harder and harder to find.  Thus, my decision, after talking with JR and with the folks at Bumpus, to have them perform this work for me, even though it was nearly 500 miles away from my home.

The results appear to be very impressive and I can't wait to ride the bike.  After looking at the dyno sheets with me, my wife made me promise to call her every day from Maggie Valley so that she knows I'm still alive! ;D

So, to sum it up: Zipper's makes a great product, Bumpus H-D has an excellent service department and technician in Brian Rose, and JR is Bike Babysitter Extraordinaire!!!!!!!!

Oh, and one last thing . . . . . . . . . . Heeeeere, Tommy, Tommy, Tommy!!! [smiley=evilgrin.gif]
